May 23, 2022 - With about two weeks to go until Election Day, independent candidate Ramit Varma ended his campaign and endorsed Rick Caruso at The Grove.
Accompanied by several campaign aides, Varma and his wife arrive at The Grove.  They are the parents of three school age boys.  In an interview with Democracy in Action, Varma said concern for his children motivated him to run.
Caruso, who along with Congresswoman Karen Bass is leading the field of mayoral candidates, has recently received several noteworthy endorsements including those of Councilman Joe Buscaino (May 12) and former Mayor Richard Riordan (May 19).

Ramit Varma's Statement

Friends,

I had one purpose when I decided to run for Mayor, and that was to improve and Reboot the city of Los Angeles. I set out to tackle the immediate problems at hand - homelessness, crime, and wealth inequality. I believe the city needs a leader who operates with practicality, accountability, and empathy. As an outsider, I knew this journey wouldn't be easy, but I was willing to fight for what I believe the city of L.A. needs. As a businessman, have faced many challenges and have had to pivot my direction several times, and that decision was always made for the greater good of the company, not just for me. With that being said, I had the opportunity to sit down with Rick Caruso to discuss his plans for the city, and I was incredibly impressed by his thoughtfulness, drive, and genuine desire to fix the problems in L.A. by building a plan for growth that will last us for decades. Although Rick and I have very different backgrounds and experiences, I found that we are united by a common purpose. We both want Los Angeles to be a city that is safe, affordable, and clean. A city that our children and decades to come can be proud of.

After deep thought and consideration, I have decided to join forces with Rick Caruso because I believe we are aligned in our vision for the city of L.A. With Rick's experience and my background in technology, I have confidence that we will be on the path to a greater Los Angeles.

It is the end of my campaign, but it is the beginning of a new path, working closely with Rick and his team to drive sense, practicality and accountability in our city government. We are stronger together, and it is indeed time for a new kind of Mayor - I believe we are on a successful path to that.
