Climate Activists Cheer House Passage of the Inflation Reduction Act                ...back>
Aug. 12, 2022 - Climate activists gathered on Capitol Hill to cheer Democrats' passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.  Not one Republican voted for the legislation.  The Senate passed the measure by a 51 to 50 vote on Aug. 7, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the deciding vote, and the House today passed the measure on a 220 to 207 party line vote with four abstentions.

According to a fact sheet from Senate Democrats, the bill "will make a historic down payment on deficit reduction to fight inflation, invest in domestic energy production and manufacturing, and reduce carbon emissions by roughly 40 percent by 2030. The bill will also finally allow Medicare to negotiate for prescription drug prices and extend the expanded Affordable Care Act program for three years, through 2025." [PDF]  Republicans had a decidedly different view of the legislation.  House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy stated, "Remember this day. When Democrats jammed through a 700-page bill that raises your taxes and doubles the size of the IRS. 87 days from now, Democrats will have only themselves to blame..."

Republicans were not much in evidence, although U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (GA-14) talked with reporters on the House steps.
