Buscaino Campaign Statement on USC Mayoral Debate

Los Angeles, CA — Following tonight’s mayoral debate at USC, Joe Buscaino for Mayor advisor Bill Burton released the following statement:

“At the USC debate tonight, Joe Buscaino spoke the truth again and again, and the other candidates continued to follow his lead on how to deal with the crisis of homelessness.

“Rick Caruso was uneven and rattled from the first moment when he complained about not knowing he could bring notes. Caruso surprised a lot of people (including his own advisers) when he committed to releasing his tax returns. The highlight was probably when Caruso was called out for both his support for George Gascon and George W. Bush.

“Overall, Buscaino won the debate demonstrating leadership and Caruso struggled to show what he stands for when he has stood on both sides of every issue for so long.”

Joe Buscaino is the son of parents who, like many others, came to Los Angeles in pursuit of a better life. Buscaino was born in San Pedro and has chosen to raise his family in the same neighborhood where he grew up. His first job with the City was working for the Department of Recreation and Parks, followed by the Los Angeles Police Department, where he served the San Fernando Valley before becoming a Senior Lead Officer for his home community of San Pedro. Buscaino served as a first responder for 15 years, becoming an LAPD Sergeant. He is married with two children.

Buscaino is the immediate past President of the National League of Cities, where he served as President in 2020. Under his leadership, the National League of Cities spearheaded the campaign for federal aid to help support local governments’ funding during the pandemic. That campaign culminated in President Biden’s most recent stimulus bill, which will provide Los Angeles with an estimated $2 billion in recovery funding.
