What We’ve Built: Elizabeth Warren Enters Caucuses with Widest, Deepest Coalition of Iowa Support

More than 550 Iowa elected officials, party leaders, political activists and community leaders will stand with Elizabeth on caucus night
West Des Moines, Iowa — Elizabeth Warren and her Iowa campaign are building a grassroots movement for big, structural change, and with less than a week remaining before the Feb. 3 caucuses the scale of that movement is now fully evident.

Elizabeth has built the widest and deepest pool of Iowa political support in the 2020 presidential field. She has unified the Democratic Party behind her vision for ending corruption, ensuring opportunity for all and choosing hope over fear for the future of our country.

With Saturday’s endorsement by the Des Moines Register editorial board and the announcement of more than 40 new endorsements on Sunday, Elizabeth now has more than 550 named Iowa political endorsers, representing every facet of our party and widening the Democratic tent to welcome newly engaged Iowans and those who previously supported a different party.

Elizabeth is popular with dozens of elected officials who have won votes and represented Iowans at every level of government.. She’s the choice for scores of party leaders and activists who turn out voters and perform the essential work of grassroots democracy. She’s the top choice for more than 100 student leaders at Iowa high schools and colleges. She has the support of over 100 labor leaders and union members, and has the backing of more than 70 veterans and military family members. More than 40 Iowans who previously identified as Republicans or supported Donald Trump are proudly supporting Elizabeth next Monday.

Below is the full list of Elizabeth’s Iowa endorsements. Every name represents an Iowan who will stand up at their local precinct on Monday night to make an enthusiastic, positive case for electing Elizabeth Warren to be our next president.

West Des Moines, Iowa — The Iowa for Warren campaign today announced endorsements from more than 25 Polk County elected officials and political leaders, growing the long list of Iowans committed to supporting Elizabeth Warren’s vision for big, structural change at the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 3.

Among the new endorsers are Iowa state Reps. Jennifer Konfrst and Heather Matson, Des Moines City Councilman Josh Mandelbaum and five chairpersons from Area Democratic Party organizations.

“On February 3, I will proudly stand with Elizabeth Warren in my precinct caucus,” Iowa state Rep. Jennifer Konfrst said. “Nothing is more important to me than electing a president who has a vision for ensuring everyone in our country has a chance at the American dream.”

“We need someone who is bold enough to believe in who we can be, and experienced enough to make that vision a reality,” Konfrst said. “I’ve worked hard over the last year to help spread an important message of opportunity for all, and I still believe that message is critical to our country’s future. I’m proud to endorse Elizabeth because I know she’ll carry that message all the way to the White House.”

"I was called to action in this presidential race by a message of civic grace and common purpose, and a sincere desire to heal our country,” Iowa state Rep. Heather Matson said. “And after a long Iowa caucus campaign, Elizabeth Warren has emerged as the best candidate to defend our shared values, ensure opportunity for all and give a voice to those too often left behind.”

“We’re at a crossroads in America, and now is the moment for bold action,” Matson said. “Elizabeth's passion and her proven record make her the best candidate to lead the Democratic ticket and move our country forward together."

Iowa State Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen Endorses Elizabeth Warren

West Des Moines, IA — Iowa state Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen, D-Des Moines, has endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president, and will appear at events in the Des Moines metro with Elizabeth on Sunday and Monday.

Petersen is the highest-ranking woman in the Iowa Legislature, and the first woman to hold the office of Senate Democratic Leader. She is serving her second term in the Senate and previously served six terms in the Iowa House.

“I want our next president to bring our nation back together,” Janet Petersen said. “That’s why I’m proud to endorse Elizabeth Warren for President. All Iowans and all Americans can unite behind her plans for ending corruption and ensuring opportunity.”

“Elizabeth has a vision for fundamentally changing how we show up for one another in this country,” Petersen said. “Her plans will recommit our government to working for us, and reshape our economy to level the playing field for all.”

Petersen will appear with Elizabeth at a town hall in Des Moines on Sunday and a community conversation in Grimes on Monday

Petersen sponsored and passed Iowa’s Smokefree Air Act, and is a leading advocate in the legislature for defending and expanding access to health care and advancing stronger domestic abuse prevention laws. Like Elizabeth, she has a record of fighting corruption and calling out cronyism in state government.

She is a founding partner, along with four other Des Moines-area moms, of Healthy Birth Day, Inc., an education and support nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of stillbirth and infant death. Healthy Birth Day is best known for its Count the Kicks campaign, which educates parents-to-be on tracking their babies’ movements to reduce the risk of stillbirth.

Petersen is a leading Democratic voice in Iowa. She was a critical endorser for then-Sen. Barack Obama in 2007, and supported Hillary Clinton in 2015.

“Janet came to politics for all the right reasons, and she fights for all the right things — her family, her neighbors, our children and our communities," Warren said. "I’m grateful to stand with her as we build a grassroots movement for big, structural change.”

Petersen joins State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald, former Lieutenant Governor Sally Pederson, Iowa Democratic leader John Norris, the Storm Lake Times newspaper, 10 fellow state legislators and scores of local officials and activists who have endorsed Warren’s campaign.

___________

Peterson spoke with Democracy in Action on January 19 about her endorsement and its timing:

"I'm a lifelong Iowan and have participated in caucuses since I was 17 years old,.  So, I've usually endorsed pretty early in the caucus process because it's fun to get in on the ground when a presidential candidate is building their campaign and learn from them.  But I was recently elected as our Senate Democratic Leader and so I thought my role had changed, that I should step back and open up doors for all of the presidential candidates to opportunities across our state.

But now we've moved from that phase into decision making phase of the Iowa caucuses and this year like no other I have had more Iowans asking me what I plan to do, and I said I plan to caucus.  "Who are you caucusing for?"  And I decided the country is looking at us to make up our mind early, and leaders should be expected to make their decisions as well.  And so I decided it's time to step off the sidelines and let Iowans know who I'm planning to caucus for on February 3rd, because of decision making time and Iowans need to decide.

Were you heavily courted by dozens of candidates?

Hi.

How are you doing, just give us a

sense of saying that I have friends

and all of the presidential campaign. I.

We have such a talented,

who have agreed to step up and run toxic

politics again never seen before.

So I decided

I really believe, Elizabeth has the power to

also serve as a candidate that independents and Republicans who've been left behind.

Someone that they would feel comfortable supporting rally issues they care about getting rid of corruption. I can't think of anyone who doesn't realize how important that is in our country. And also just removing barriers

for everyone

is a powerful, powerful message

to make it happen.

More Than 40 Former Trump Voters and Republicans in Iowa Endorse Elizabeth Warren

West Des Moines, IA — More than 40 current or former Republicans — including Iowans who voted for Trump in the last election and a 2016 Iowa caucus precinct captain for Ted Cruz — have endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president. The list includes 16 Iowans who will have precinct leadership roles for the Warren campaign on caucus night.

“Elizabeth Warren is building a coalition that will win this November because she’s fighting to level the playing field for all working families,” said Judy Haynes, a former Republican from Manchester, Iowa. “She’s fighting to end corruption in Washington so our government works for the American people — not just the wealthy and well-connected. This former Republican is caucusing for Elizabeth on Feb. 3rd because I want to live in the America she knows is possible.”

Elizabeth Warren is running for president to end corruption and ensure opportunity for all. Her plans start with a wealth tax — a small tax on the fortunes of the wealthiest 0.1 percent of Americans. The plan enjoys support from across the political spectrum, and would generate revenue we can use to provide universal child care and pre-K, high-quality public K-12 for every student, universal free public college and technical school, student-loan debt cancellation for 42 million Americans and more.

“Republicans, Democrats and independents alike can see that government today works great for those at the top, while leaving everyone else behind,” Elizabeth Warren said. “I’m grateful to see Iowans from across the political spectrum joining our movement  — together, we can make the big, structural change we need.”

More Than 100 Iowa Labor Leaders and Union Members Endorse Elizabeth Warren

West Des Moines, IA — More than 100 labor leaders and union members from across Iowa have endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president.

“Elizabeth Warren has devoted her life to fighting for workers' rights and defending the middle class,” said Mary Burke, a registered nurse, Iowa labor leader and SEIU member. “Whether she's in the halls of power, at a campaign town hall or on the picket line, Elizabeth has the same message: unions built the middle class and unions will rebuild the middle class. I'm standing with her because she stands up for us."

Elizabeth’s plan to empower workers is the most progressive and comprehensive agenda for workers since the New Deal. She will extend labor rights to all workers and expand protections for part-time workers; prohibit so-called “right to work” laws; strengthen organizing, collective bargaining, and the right to strike; increase worker choice and control; and expand worker protections, combat discrimination, and improve enforcement of labor laws. She will also ban non-compete agreements, empower workers to elect 40% of board members for companies with over a billion dollars in revenue, and amend federal law to promote sectoral bargaining across industries.

“I’m grateful to have the support of such a broad slate of labor leaders and union members supporting my campaign and my plans to put power in the hands of working people,” Elizabeth Warren said. “The changes I’ve proposed will shift power to working people, boost America’s labor movement, and help create an economy that works for everyone.”

Iowa Progressive Leader John Norris Endorses Elizabeth Warren

West Des Moines, IA — John Norris, a leading progressive voice for rural Iowa and an Iowa Democratic Party stalwart, endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president on Friday.

Norris, of Des Moines, has deep experience in Iowa politics, policy and government — including directing John Kerry’s victorious 2004 caucus campaign.

“I’m endorsing Elizabeth for president because she’s put the fight for economic and social justice at the core of her candidacy,” John Norris said. “We must end the power the wealthy exert over our government and economy, and I have complete confidence that Elizabeth will fight for that every single day as our president."

“When I look at Elizabeth, I see Iowa’s great tradition of prairie populism — the bravery to call out the corruption that holds back hard-working people and the vision to offer an alternative,” Norris said. “She’s calling for the big, structural change we need to ensure opportunity for all — and she can get it done.”

Norris ran for Iowa governor in 2018 on a platform of rural and agricultural regeneration.

“His agenda is focused primarily on bringing back good-paying jobs, strong schools and health care to rural communities,” the Des Moines Register wrote of his candidacy. “Norris comes by his rural populism naturally and talks about rural values in the context of his upbringing on a farm near Red Oak.”

Norris’ career in Iowa politics spans four decades, beginning as an aide to then-U.S. Rep. Tom Harkin. He is a past chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party and served as Iowa state director for Jesse Jackson’s 1988 presidential campaign, Harkin’s 1992 campaign and Kerry’s 2004 campaign.

He served as chief of staff to Tom Vilsack during Vilsack’s tenures as Iowa governor and U.S. secretary of agriculture. During the Obama administration, he also served on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and as U.S. minister-counselor to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Food Program.

Norris accompanied Elizabeth on an Aug. 9 site visit of the Des Moines River watershed in Humboldt County, where they discussed water quality challenges.

Norris’ support comes a week after the Pulitzer Prize-winning Storm Lake Times endorsed Elizabeth in an editorial. In that endorsement, Times editor Art Cullen credited Elizabeth for developing “the most extensive agenda for rural America.”

“Warren shows a real feeling for places left behind because she comes from there. …” Cullen wrote.” Elizabeth Warren is fighting on principle like nobody else to give us a chance.”

In addition to Cullen, Norris joins the late former Iowa congressman Berkley Bedell, former Iowa state Reps. Mark Kuhn and Kurt Swaim, rural activist Denise O’Brien and community placemaker Zack Mannheimer among rural advocates backing Elizabeth.

Elizabeth has released plans for leveling the playing field family farmers, investing in rural America, and a new farm economy.

ICYMI: Storm Lake Times Endorses Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth earns support of influential rural Iowa newspaper

Read the endorsement here.

West Des Moines, IA — The Storm Lake Times, the Pulitzer Prize-winning northwest Iowa newspaper, has endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president.

Warren shows a real feeling for places left behind because she comes from there,” the newspaper wrote in an editorial today. “Elizabeth Warren is fighting on principle like nobody else to give us a chance.”

The Times called Warren’s plans to invest in rural America and to create a new farm economy “the most extensive agenda for rural America built around regenerative agriculture, open and transparent markets, restoring labor rights and reversing the hegemony on the working class in place for the last 50 years.”

Art Cullen, the editor of the Storm Lake Times, is known as “the voice of rural Iowa” for his outspoken coverage of issues facing rural communities. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 2017 for his powerful editorials challenging corporate agricultural interests in Iowa. Cullen is a contributor to the Washington Post and The Guardian and regularly appears on national news programs to discuss rural issues.

“We need bold, structural change. Going back to the good old days is impossible, and it’s not good enough,” the Times wrote. Warren knows this is a fight that’s been waged since the Gilded Age that now replays itself with no regard for Council Bluffs, Sioux City or Storm Lake. She has no illusions. She knows the stakes. And she knows what is right.”

Military Family Members Endorse Elizabeth Warren

West Des Moines, IA — On Veteran's Day, 76 veterans and military family members in Iowa endorsed Elizabeth Warren's campaign for president. The endorsements follow the release of Elizabeth's plan to support and protect America's veterans, service members and military families last week.

"I served as a combat medic during Vietnam, working as an operating room tech in Japan. In the decades since, I've taken on the role of veterans' advocate — particularly on the issues of PTSD and traumatic brain injury," said James Marren of Polk County, an Army veteran. "It can be hard for people to understand the mental and physical needs of severely wounded vets, but Elizabeth does. Her plans are why I'm strongly endorsing Elizabeth for president."

James is one of four Veterans for Warren team leaders spearheading the Iowa for Warren campaign's efforts to recruit more veterans and military families to support Elizabeth.

Iowa State Senator Joe Bolkcom Endorses Elizabeth Warren

Read the full column here

West Des Moines, IA - Iowa state Sen. Joe Bolkcom endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president on Friday, announcing his support in an op-ed for the Iowa City Press-Citizen. Bolkcom is serving his sixth term in the Iowa Senate, where he’s represented portions of Johnson County since 1999. In the Senate, he serves as Assistant Minority Leader and ranking member on the Appropriations Committee.

Key sections of Bolkcom’s op-ed are below. Read the full column here.

“I enthusiastically support Elizabeth Warren for president because she can win and is best suited to transform our politics once she’s in office. She has the energy, experience and guts to take on powerful entrenched special interests in Washington to solve daunting problems facing the American people and our planet.

“As I’ve watched the Iowa caucuses unfold over the past several months, I’ve seen Elizabeth organize a grassroots campaign rooted in big ideas and person-to-person connections. She is campaigning in small towns, rural communities and big cities. That time she spends listening and learning about the lives of everyday Americans makes her a better candidate — and will make her a better president. She’s proving she knows how to win.”

“Income inequality driven by corporate greed and ineffective government are tearing away at the American dream and the hopes of millions of hardworking families. Money in politics is crushing our democracy. Old school, business-as-usual politics won’t fix it —only a courageous, relentless fighter like Elizabeth will.

“Elizabeth Warren is the clear choice for transformative, experience driven problem solving. A powerful woman president is the best hope for the positive change we need right now. That’s why I’ll be caucusing for her on February 3.”
