Travels of President Donald J. Trump—August 2020

President Donald J. Trump  |  Vice President Mike Pence  ||  Former Vice President Joe Biden  |  Sen. Kamala Harris

Campaigning in the time of COVID.  During August President Trump traveled to 13 states.  August marked a slow re-start of rallies; Trump did seven rally/rally type events during the month, plus convention events.  The highlight of the month was the spectacle at the White House on Aug. 27.  His busy itinerary during the week of the Democratic National Convention included airport stops in Minnesota and Wisconsin, a trip to the border in Yuma, Arizona and an event near Biden's hometown of Scranton, PA on the night of Biden's acceptance speech.  Trump spent 26 nights at the White House and five at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ.  Trump held 13 full fledged press conferences, ten at the White House and three at Bedminster.  He did at least eight fundraising events during the month and played at least eight rounds of golf.  In addition to actual events he continued his virtual tele-rallies, doing four of those. On the policy front, on Aug. 8 Trump announced executive actions on pandemic relief.  @TeamTrump

Rallies
August marked a slow re-start of rallies.  After Trump's debacle rally in Tulsa on June 20 he did a handful of other large events: the Students for Trump (Turning Point USA) Convention at Dream City Church in Phoenix on June 23 (>), the Mt. Rushmore Fireworks Celebration on July 3 (>) and the 2020 Salute to America  at the White House on July 4 (>).  The campaign cancelled a planned July 10 rally in Portsmouth, NH ostensibly because of Tropical Storm Fay.

Mostly in the evening at airports:

Aug. 6 - Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, OH. >

Aug. 17 - Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in Minneapolis, MN. >
Aug. 17 - Remarks on jobs and the economy at Mankato Regional Airport in Mankato, MN. >
Aug. 17 - Remarks on jobs and the economy at Wittman Airport in Oshkosh, WI. >

Aug. 18 - Remarks on immigration and border security at Yuma International Airport in Yuma, AZ. >

Aug. 20 - Mariotti Building Products in Old Forge, PA. >

Aug. 28 - Pro Star Aviation in Londonderry, NH. >

Formal News Conferences
Formal news conferences by a president are perhaps the most obvious example of using the bully pulpit, and President Trump does a lot of them.  Although White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany gives regular briefings, Trump frequently serves as his own spokesman.  In August he did 13 press conferences, ranging from 18 to 64 minutes and averaging 34 minutes
[does not include the Aug. 10 one which was interrupted].  In addition to the formal sessions with reporters, Trump does field questions at other times such as after meetings and before departures.

News Conference Lead Paragraphs
(from White House transcripts)
August 3, >
I want to start by providing information on our response to Tropical Storm Isaias. It’s a very interesting name. last week, the storm hit Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and I’ve issued emergency declarations to support a response in both of those areas. So that’s Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. [37 min.]

August 4, >
Hello, everybody. Thank you very much. Let me begin by sending America’s deepest sympathies to the people of Lebanon, where reports indicate that many, many people were killed, hundreds more were very badly wounded in a large explosion in Beirut. Our prayers go out to all the victims and their families. The United States stands ready to assist Lebanon. I have a very good relationship with the people of Lebanon, and we will be there to help. It looks like a terrible attack. [37 min.]

August 7, >
Well, thank you very much. And it’s a great honor to have everybody here. And I know the press was not quite expecting this, so I appreciate your being able to attend. We have a terrific number of things, and some very positive things to tell you tonight.  [Bedminster, 40 min.]

August 8, >
Thank you very much everybody.  Thank you, and good afternoon.  My administration has been working around the clock in good faith to reach an agreement with Democrats on additional China virus relief.  [Bedminster, 32 min.]

August 10, >
Thank you very much. I thought I’d start by talking about some mail-in voting that just was revealed — just the news. Half a million incorrect absentee ballot applications were sent all across the state of Virginia, including to many dead people. This was an unprecedented mailing flub that’s heightened concerns about the integrity of expanding mail-in voting and mail-in voting efforts. It’s a disaster — all over Virginia, half a million votes. So that’s something you have to think about.  [interrupted, then continued]

August 11, >
Thank you very much. Nice to be with you all. Good evening.  Before providing today’s update on the China virus, I want to address the violence, looting, and rioting taking place in the Democrat-controlled cities of New York, Portland, Chicago, and Seattle. The mayors and governors of these states and cities have an absolute duty to use all resources necessary to end the violence and all of the injury and death.  [29 min.]

August 12, >
Thank you very much.  I appreciate you being here, and good evening.  As we continue to confront the China virus, we’re rebuilding America’s economy like nobody thought possible, actually.  We’re doing incredibly well.
The stock market is up almost 300 points again today.  While our economy is performing significantly better than Europe — which people have to understand very strongly; it’s performing better than any market anywhere in the world actually.  At the same time, Europe has experienced a 40 percent higher excess mortality than the United States.  And I will say that that’s a significant number.  We’re working with Europe on their difficulties, and we are going to help them all the way.  [64 min.]

August 13, >
Hello, everyone.  Thank you very much.  It was just announced by Attorney General Barr that they’ve caught the killer of LeGend Taliferro — horribly shot — a young man, wonderful young man.  And we have just — this just came out two minutes ago.  So, Attorney General Barr just announced.  [43 min.]

August 14, >
Okay. Thank you very much, everybody. So we have some very interesting news. Kevin Clinesmith, a corrupt FBI attorney who falsified FISA warrants in James Comey’s very corrupt FBI, is expected to plead guilty. You probably heard that. It just came out. So that’s just the beginning, I would imagine, because what happened should never happen again. So, he is pleading guilty. Terrible thing. Terrible thing. The fact is they spied on my campaign and they got caught. And you’ll be hearing more. [19 min.]

August 15, >
Thank you. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. And thank you for being here. Let me provide a brief update on the China virus, as well as our economic recovery, which is going really very well, as you probably have been hearing.  [Bedminister, 33 min.]

August 19, >
Well, thank you very much.  Before I provide an update on our continued progress against the China virus, I’d like to discuss our latest actions against the Iranian regime.
Today, I’m directing the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to notify the U.N. Security Council that the United States intends to restore virtually all of the previously suspended United Nations sanctions on Iran.  It’s a snapback; it’s not uncommon.  [29 min.]

August 23, >
Thank you very much.  And it’s good to see you all.  Hope you had a great weekend at your convention.  And we’re going to have a great convention coming up, and I look forward to it.
But before I discuss a very historic breakthrough in our fight against the China virus, I’d like to provide an update on the recent wildfires in California and the storms in the Gulf of Mexico.  [18 min.; just Trump, Azar, Hahn spoke; no reporter questions]

August 31, >
Thank you very much. I’d like to begin by saying we’ve just closed out another month of stock market. We had the best stock market — Dow — in 36 years. That’s very impressive. So people are very happy with their 401(k)s and with the stocks that they have. And that’s a tremendous achievement: best in 36 years.  [27 min.]
