2020 Libertarian Party Convention

Delegates Elect Jo Jorgensen as Presidential Nominee and Spike Cohen as Vice Presidential Nominee

"The 2020 presidential race has been a frenzy of accusations, insults and egos. I'm offering something completely different. I'm running to cut government on bold, fresh proposals that make America feel safe, secure and prosperous."  – Jo Jorgensen  [transcript]

Day Three — May 24, 2020

  • Four candidates qualified for nomination for vice president: John Monds, Adam Kokesh, Ken Armstrong and Spike Cohen. Each candidate had up to 11 minutes to speak individually or with nominators. Jo Jorgensen then spoke for several minutes, leaving the VP choice to the delegates (+).
Round One Summary
Armstrong 180, Cohen 416, Kokesh 87, Monds 322, NOTA 7, w/ins 12: Total 1,024.

Round Two Summary
Armstrong 96, Cohen 474, Monds 432, NOTA 12, w/ins 11: Total 1,025.  Kokesh and Armstrong delivered brief remarks.

Convention chairman Nick Sarwark delivered a heated speech against the second, in-person sitting scheduled for Orlando, handing the gavel to convention vice chair Alex Merced.  "If the delegates would like to elect the new chair, the ought to do it now," Sarwark stated.  Things got messy, but the convention did adjourn for a second sitting at Shingle Creek in Orlando from July 9-12.

Delegates rejected several motions to suspend the rules (requires 2/3rds vote).  One of these
would have allowed all candidates who were nominated for president (received more than 30 tokens) and did not receive the nomination to automatically be allowed to be candidates for vice president if they accept without having to get separate tokens.  (Failed on a vote of Yes 470, No 443).  The chair entertained motions to suspend the rules to place various candidates' names in nomination; all were handily defeated: Arvin Vohra (Yes 142, No 778), Dan Taxation is Theft Behrman (Yes 222, No 710), Souraya Faas (Yes 86, No 840), Sorinne Ardeleanu (Yes 138, No 774), Sam Robb (Yes 96, No 791), Nicholas Sarwark (Yes 207, No 707).

Several candidates who did not qualify endorsed candidates who did: Vohra endorsed Kokesh. Behrman, Ruff endorsed Supreme and Robb endorsed Jorgensen.

Each campaign had 16 minutes for nominating and candidate speeches.  Nominations were done in random order (Monds, Kokesh, Jorgensen, Hornberger, Gray, Supreme).

Voting for President.
Round One Summary

Round Two Summary
Jorgensen 339, Hornberger 257, Supreme 184, Monds 169, NOTA 6 and w/ins 9.  Gray gave a two-minute concession speech.  He did not endorse and removed his name from consideration from vice president nomination.

Round Three Summary
Jorgensen 390, Hornberger 264, Supreme 188, Monds 174, NOTA 7 and w/ins 4.  Monds endorsed Jorgensen, and said he would accept the vice presidential nomination.

Round Four Summary

Day One — May 22, 2020

Delegates approved the Credentials Committee report, then proceeded to adoption of agenda. There were many points of order and much haggling over rules. At least a few delegates believe this is not a legal convention under the bylaws. LP Chair Nick Sarwark patiently oversaw the proceedings.  Example of what one delegate termed "parliamentary nonsense:"

"The ruling that we're talking about is the one that you made that an amendment to the agenda was a suspension of the rules rather than an amendment motion to a motion to adopt the agenda. You ruled that it was, there's, there's a standing order. However, the standing order says that item number three on the agenda is the adoption of the agenda and since we're in that stage right now then amending the agenda should not be a suspension of the rules but rather should be an amendment to the motion adopting the agenda, only requiring a simple majority rather than a two thirds vote."

The session adjourned at 9:57 p.m. Central. Nomination tokens were sent out later in the evening and could be submitted to the next morning.
