Constitution Party National Convention

Held Telephonically

May 1-2, 2020

Five candidates sought the Constitution Party's presidential nomination: Don Blankenship, a former coal executive from West Virginia; Daniel Clyde Cummings, a medical doctor from Utah; Don Grundmann, a chiropractor from California; Charles W. Kraut, a financial advisor from New York; and Sam Tittle from Virginia.  Heading into the convention, Blankenship and Kraut were seen as the frontrunners.

The convention was originally scheduled to be held at the Hilton Union Station in Saint Louis from May 1-2, but the pandemic forced the shift to a virtual meeting.  Organizers decided to conduct the convention telephonically rather than using video conferencing to forestall the risk of connection problems which might disrupt the meeting.  (Some members, especially in rural areas do not have the best connectivity).  Initial plans had called for a debate on the opening night of the convention.  In lieu of the debate, a committee put together a set of 13 questions which they submitted to the candidates about two weeks out; the candidates' responses were then circulated to participants [Q&A].  Additionally, organizers decided that there was no way to have a platform committee meeting and that the party should retain its 2016 platform.

119 delegates representing 309 delegate votes from 26 states participated in the convention (+).  On the evening of May 1 (Friday), they conducted business and heard nominating and candidate speeches from the five candidates.  Delegates had until 10 a.m. the next morning to vote by email.
Delegates elected Blankenship on the second ballot.

First ballot: Blankenship 139.5; Kraut 77.8; Tittle 46.35; Grundmann 25.25; Cummings 13.1.

Second ballot: Blankenship 177; Kraut 86.75; Grundmann 24; Tittle 21.25.

Blankenship wanted Kraut as his running mate, but Kraut felt he could better serve by focusing on his writing.  The selection of the vice presidential nominee went to nominations from the floor.  Quite a few names were advanced before delegates reached a consensus on Willliam Mohr, a leader of the US Taxpayers Party of Michigan.

At the time of the convention, the Constitution Party had ballot access in 15 states (AR, CO, FL, HI, MI, MS, MO, NV, NM, NC, OR, SC, WI, WY, UT).  In addition, unaffiliated parties in several states have provided a ballot line for Constitution Party candidates.  Gaining ballot access states with at least 270 electoral votes so the party's nominee has a mathematical possibility of being elected is an immediate priority.  Ironically the pandemic could make that onerous task somewhat easier as some states have relaxed ballot access requirements, for example by allowing online petitioning.  (ema - May 7, 2020, updated May 20)

Don Blankenship Acceptance Speech

[DEMOCRACY IN ACTION Transcript]

First of all, I want to thank everybody. It's an interesting process to go through, because I've never quite been familiar with this.

I think the main thing that I need to say is that, you know, we're gonna be working hard on what all the candidates were promoting. You know Samm's enthusiasm and optimism and trying to you know create a lot of excitement in the party; I hope to continue that. And of course, Dan, Dan Cummings is unbelievable as far as his knowledge of the Constitution, which will motivate me to study it closer. And of course, Don Grundmann's beliefs in integrity and all those things have to be at the front and center of our efforts to improve the party and attract more people to the party. And of course, Charles, as we all know is really keen on raising public awareness and works extremely hard, so I look forward to working or continuing to work with him if he would want to as I would. All these things are, you know, the candidates, it's amazing to see how we all have the same purpose.

And I think what I would say to you about me is, it's easy for people that don't know me to be fooled by the fake news, and that any one of you that wants to read a book that I wrote called Obama's Deadliest Cover-Up, I'd be more than glad to send you one, because I think that you would both enjoy it and learn a lot about just how evil the establishment can be.

I think my biggest selling point to those that voted for me is that I've been a warrior for the cause for a long time. It hasn't always been the Constitution Party, but if you read a lot about what people say about me you will find that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, George Soros, Tom Perez—who's head of the Democratic Party—Mitch McConnell, CNN, and even Jessica Lynn who was at DOJ, they have a lot of negative things to say. And I think it's important for all of us understand that when we go out to fight, that the enemy, and the people that we want to change, and establishment we want to turn over is going to strike back. I would assume that I will create more of that animosity if we're successful going forward.

What drives me is firsthand violations of my constitutional rights, some of it unbelievable like a prosecutor from the federal government being in federal court and saying that I should be gagged because my free speech troubles United States; being in prison for a misdemeanor with felons; and being defamed by every element of the establishment.

So, again, I appreciate all the votes, and I'm very fond of all the other candidates. They all worked very hard, and I think the thing that shows the class of the Constitution Party was how classy they were when we were together in a debate, or when we were in other forums; they're very polite and very respectful of one another and I really appreciate that.

If I could, since there's so many of you on the phone now, and won't not be so much, so many in the Nomination Committee, the important thing to being effective and moving this thing forward is going to be the unity of the party, and everybody you know having chores to do, and working, working the effort, both from the bottom with undercard candidates as well as the top at the presidential level.

I will be asking the Nomination Committee to work with me to have a mission statement for the actual campaign: what is the campaign trying to achieve. And I will be asking that we list some specific goals, you know what do we expect to achieve. And on the action plans, there are many of them. We need a fundraising action plan. We need a media access action plan. We need you know some plan for social media. We need intelligence gathering, which I might pause for a moment and say that my experience is that a lot of candidates go out and deliver messages that are even given no chance of winning because the majority of the population doesn't agree with those messages. Like the Republican Party has worn out the message "we're going to cut your taxes." They seem not to realize that nearly half of Americans don't pay taxes. And I watched a guy there from Colorado promoting a candidacy almost entirely on climate change, which is at the bottom of most people's lists. So there's a lot of work to do on ballot access, and a lot of work to do on you know seeing if we can find candidates for offices where we're on the ballot. But the main thing we want to do is nurture unity, you know get on the same page. And with that I'll close and appreciate everything. Thank you very much.

Constitution Party Chooses Don Blankenship as Presidential Nominee

The Constitution Party held its Presidential Nominating Convention telephonically on May 1 and 2, 2020.  Don Blankenship from West Virginia received the nomination for president from among 5 candidates. William Mohr from Michigan was chosen as the Vice-Presidential candidate.

Don Blankenship just published his book, Obama’s Deadliest Cover-Up, about the 2010 Upper Big Branch (UBB) Mine disaster to disclose the dark truth. In this daring exposé, Don Blankenship reveals how far the government will go to keep its dirty secrets. Blankenship went to prison for a year on a misdemeanor. Since then a Federal Judge recommended that Blankenship’s conviction be voided for prosecutorial misconduct. www.donblankenship.com

“It is an honor to have been chosen to be the Constitution Party candidate for President of the United States,” stated Don Blankenship. “Americans now have an opportunity to truly make America Great Again.”

“As President, the American people and I will also Make Detroit Great Again, Make New York Great Again, Make Philadelphia Great Again, and Make All American Cities Great Again. We will no longer spend American taxpayer money to police the world.  Instead that money will be used to police our cities and end the opiate drug epidemic”, he continued.

“We will no longer allow corporations to use illegal immigrant labor to depress the minimum wage nor to take jobs away from American workers.  We will end sanctuary cities, stop providing healthcare for non-Americans, and use that money to provide better healthcare for America’s poor and elderly,” Blankenship stated.

“We will no longer export our American jobs to China nor import their viruses into our homes. We will live by the motto that ‘charity begins at home’.   We will end foreign aid until there are no homeless Americans. We will make our medicines, our cars, our beer, our cell phones, our steel, and our future here in America.”

“We will do all of this for the sake of our children and our country, while protecting and defending our Constitutional rights.”

“The simple reason you should elect me to be your President is that I will be exactly that—your President.  Every action I take will be in the best interest of America and Americanism,” concluded Don Blankenship Presidential Candidate of the Constitution Party.

William (Bill) Mohr was chosen as the Vice-Presidential candidate. He is the State Chairman of the Michigan U.S. Taxpayers Party, the state affiliate of the Constitution Party. He has built a vibrant party in Michigan under his leadership.

‘“If you want the results you used to get, you have to do the things you used to do.” The foundations cannot be repaired using new ideas. It cannot be repaired by implementing “change”. It must be repaired by adhering to the principles upon which it was established. Anything short of that will result in continued failure, continued loss of liberties, continued loss of freedom, and progressive misery upon the American people,’ stated Bill Mohr, Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Constitution Party.

The  Constitution Party National Committee also elected officers for the next four years including: National Chairman, James Clymer from Pennsylvania, Vice-Chairman Doug Aden from Colorado, Secretary, Paula Hospelhorn from Arizona, Treasurer Gerald Kilpatrick from Colorado.
