Culinary Union delivered Nevada for Biden/Harris, drove unprecedented turnout with the largest political team statewide

Organizers knocked on half a million doors during a pandemic, including half of the Black and Latinx voters in Nevada.

Las Vegas, NV –  The Culinary Union, the largest affiliate of UNITE HERE, the strongest political force in the state, delivered Nevada for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, mobilized over a hundred thousand hospitality workers and voters to defeat Trump, and elected representatives down the ballot who will fight for our families.

“We congratulate President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, Congressional representatives Dina Titus, Steven Horsford, Susie Lee, and Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy. We are ready to continue the work to protect workers,” said Geoconda Argüello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union.

“The unprecedented turnout in Nevada, which was led by those most directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, is a mandate on Donald Trump’s failed leadership,” continued Argüello-Kline. “Ever since he assumed the office, Trump has been a daily threat to the livelihoods of workers and our families. We are taking back our country and are proud to have delivered Nevada for political candidates who will represent working families and fight for our issues. Nevadans need comprehensive COVID-19 relief now, a fair economy that centers workers, racial justice that ensures Black Lives Matter, and a democracy that includes all of us - whether we are Black or white, Native or new immigrant, Latinx or Asian.”

The Culinary Union celebrated its 85th anniversary on November 1st and is proud to have fought for over eight decades to protect working families in Nevada. Having run the most successful and largest political program ever in the organization’s history, the Culinary Union will continue the fight to ensure that democracy stands and that workers’ voices are heard.

Total political efforts for the 2020 General Election: The Culinary Union’s political program for the 2020 General Election, which was responsive to the COVID-19 global pandemic, began on August 1, 2020 and was the largest in the state.

The battle-tested political program had 500 UNITE HERE and Culinary Union hospitality workers canvass and mobilize voters to vote early and vote by mail. Since August 1st, canvassers knocked on 500,000 doors in Las Vegas and Reno and talked to 130,000 voters (in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, and Amharic). In Nevada, canvassers spoke to over 42,400 eligible voters who did not vote for 2016, knocked on the doors of half of the Black and Latinx voters in Nevada, and helped low-propensity voters make a plan to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

The Culinary Union, which ran the largest political program ever in its history, was the first organization in Nevada to conduct safe door-to-door canvassing during a global pandemic when most had abandoned in-person canvassing - a cornerstone of electoral work and organizing. Culinary Union created comprehensive “contactless door-to-door canvassing” protocols to minimize risk. Guidelines included mandatory use of PPE including masks and gloves, adherence to social distancing guidelines both on the doors with voters and among canvassers, and specialized health and safety requirements including contact tracing and virtual meetings.

The Culinary Union ran a comprehensive strategic communications program, which included 1.9 million emails and texts, completely in-house polling, digital persuasion social media ads targeting Nevada voters, “Trump Lies” video ads with over 11.4 million views via UNITE HERE’s Take Back 2020 PAC, and uplifted the stories of workers who are fighting to take back their country in local, national, and international media.

In addition to a robust mail program, where approximately 5.6 million pieces were mailed to Culinary Union members and eligible voters, the Culinary Union also had a strong multilingual phone bank program, which was entirely run by UNITE HERE and Culinary Union worker-volunteers. Across the country, phone bankers made calls in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, and Amharic. By the end of Election Day, 2 million personal calls and 242,400 automated calls were made to Culinary Union members, their families, and registered voters throughout Nevada.

Culinary Union’s historic 2020 efforts surpass previous political efforts: In the 2018 midterms, 350 hospitality worker canvassers knocked on 370,000 doors. In the 2016 presidential race, 300 canvassers knocked on 350,000 doors.

The Culinary Union drove turnout in Nevada because our union has worked for over eight decades to build worker power and strength. Every political effort draws from the Culinary Union’s 85-years of rich knowledge regarding effective voter contact, which is rooted in the principle of working people talking to each other about the importance of building power through voting.

Canvassers reflect the Culinary Union’s diverse membership, which is majority women and people of color, who are committed to economic and racial justice and organizing for our collective liberation. As the largest immigrant organization in Nevada, the Culinary Union is proud to have founded the Citizenship Project, which has helped over 18,000 Nevadans become U.S. citizens and new voters since 2001.

“Elections are always about choices, but this is the most consequential choice of our lifetimes,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “Four more years of Trump is an existential threat to the American way of life. This is a five alarm fire – Trump has threatened the peaceful transition of power and has torched our rights and freedoms for cynical political gain, while trying to gut healthcare, defund public education and erode good union jobs, while further enriching the rich. Standing still—and staying silent—is not an option. While the president divides and destroys, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will restore dignity and bring the nation together so working people can realize the promise of America. They will fund schools and healthcare, restore voting rights, strengthen labor rights and fight to end racism and address climate change. Those are the stakes and that's why it's so urgent we do everything to get out the vote in Nevada and across the nation."

SOMOS PAC, LCV VICTORY FUND LAUNCH MILLION DOLLAR PRO-BIDEN SPANISH TV & RADIO BUY ACROSS NEVADA

New Ad Campaign Aims To Reintroduce Biden’s Story to Spanish-Speaking Nevadans

Carson City, NV — Somos PAC, a Latino-led progressive hub for persuading and mobilizing Latino voters, and LCV Victory Fund today announced a $1 million statewide Spanish radio and TV buy in Nevada aimed at reintroducing Biden to Latino voters. The ads tell Biden’s personal story overcoming struggle that so many Latino voters can relate to.

WATCH: “Nuestra Historia” (60 seconds)

WATCH: “Nuestra Historia” (30 seconds)

“Latino voters have heard enough about Trump. Right now they are looking to credible, independent voices to learn more about Joe Biden and what his presidency would mean for them,” said Melissa Morales, President of Somos PAC. “That is why Somos PAC, in partnership with organizations like LCV Victory Fund, is making major investments across the country in grassroots field operations and paid communications to restart a conversation about who Joe Biden is, what he has overcome, and what we can all overcome if he is elected president.”

“Nevada voters are on the front lines of climate change and only one candidate in this race, Joe Biden, will listen to scientists and experts and protect the health and well being of Latinx families,” said Megan Jacobs, National Campaigns Director, LCV Victory Fund. “Biden has helped our country rebuild from multiple ongoing crises before — he doesn’t give up. We need him in the White House fighting for us.”

The Nevada investments are part of Somos PAC’s multi-million dollar national push for the final 25 days aimed at boosting support for Joe Biden and other Democrats among Latino voters. The new campaign includes unprecedented investments in field operations to facilitate hundreds of thousands of direct conversations with Latino voters, targeted direct mail and digital campaigns to key Latino constituencies and Spanish radio and television buys.

The 30 second TV ad is joint between Somos PAC and LCV Victory Fund. The 60 second TV ad and radio spots are Somos PAC only. The ad campaign will run through Election Day.

The script for the new 30 second ad and an English translation are below.

“Nuestra Historia”
Nuestra historia
Es sobre valentía
Familia
Y nunca rendirnos

English translation – “Our Story”
Our story
Is a story of courage
Of family
And never giving up
And that is Joe Biden’s story
During the worst economic crisis in decades
Joe didn’t give up
He helped us fight back
Joe knows climate change is real
And will work with scientists to stop it
And as we face this new challenge
We need a leader to help us rebuild
Who’s done it before
