Cory 2020 Campaign Manager Addisu Demissie Statement on Fifth Democratic Primary Debate: “On the Ropes, Cory Broke Out to Win the Night”

Newark, NJ — Cory 2020 Campaign Manager Addisu Demissie issued the following statement on Cory Booker’s performance in the fifth Democratic debate:

“On the ropes, Cory Booker broke out to win the night. He rooted his responses in his lived experience and spoke passionately about issues impacting struggling communities. He didn’t shy away from policy differences with other candidates, but always brought it back to a message of unity in the face of Donald Trump’s division.

“Not only did he have the line of the night, but he made the case to voters as to why he belongs on the December debate stage--and they are responding. In the 20 minutes after Cory’s closing statement, our campaign had its best fundraising hour so far.

“Tonight, Cory Booker showed why he has the temperament and leadership style needed to unite the party to defeat Donald Trump.”

ICYMI: On Debate Stage, Booker “Inspired,” Was “Passionate, Funny, Clear-Eyed,” and “Broke Through”

Newark, NJ — Last night on the debate stage, Cory Booker used his lived experience to differentiate himself in the Democratic field and show that he not only has the policy agenda to lift struggling families, but he has the temperament and leadership style needed to unite the party to defeat Donald Trump.

During the debate, Cory delivered memorable moments and showed voters why he deserves to be on the December debate stage -- and voters and pundits seem to agree.

Following his standout performance performance last night, Cory hit the donor threshold for the next debate, raised over a half million dollars in the 9 hours after the debate, and received rave reviews for his performance.

Read excerpts of the coverage and reactions below:

TIME Magazine: New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker had another solid debate performance, and there are early signs that it’s translating into the type of support that will keep him in the primary race. In addition to taking a direct hit at Biden over his recent comments that he would not pursue legalizing marijuana — “I thought you might have been high when you said it” — Booker also touted his credentials, including the fact that he is a Rhodes Scholar which is often overlooked in comparison to South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Tonight’s commanding performance was typical for Booker, but his campaign has been mired in low polling. “We all owe a debt that we cannot repay. We all drink deeply from wells of freedom and liberty that we did not dig. This is the moment in America where we need a leader that can inspire us to get up and fight again. … If you give me a chance to lead, I will cause what John Lewis says is good trouble. I will challenge us. I will ask more from you than any other president has ever asked before because we need to mobilize a new American movement,” Booker said in a poignant plea to stay in the race as Lewis, a civil rights icon and Democratic member of the House of Representatives who represents an Atlanta district, watched from the audience.

Booker’s deputy campaign manager tweeted that his compelling closing argument was done off-the-cuff, and that he’d raised more than $200,000 in the half hour since he spoke his last words on stage.

New York Times: Jamelle Bouie (8/10) — Booker sits at the center of what Democratic voters say they want. He’s aspirational, he values compromise and cooperation, he wants change but he’s not too far to the left. He hasn’t been able to get any traction, but his debate performances have been uniformly good and last night was no exception.

Nicole Hemmer (8/10) — Passionate, funny, clear-eyed — Booker made a great case that if you're looking for a moderate, you've got options other than Biden and Buttigieg.

Daniel McCarthy (6/10) — Booker was energetic, confident, clearly having fun. His call for Democrats to emphasize entrepreneurship, not just government, set him apart.

    Vox: Winner: Cory Booker

For about 1 hour and 40 minutes, Cory Booker had a fairly standard, uneventful debate. He got in a good line about being the other Rhodes Scholar mayor on the stage, a light jab at Pete Buttigieg that didn’t land with much force. He had a confusing and forgettable exchange with Elizabeth Warren critiquing her wealth tax plan on technical grounds — a fair hit, but one better reserved for a policy paper than the debate stage.

Then the topic came to the black vote, and Booker broke through.

Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC: Cory Booker, I think, tonight delivered his most solid debate yet and tonally the most consistent debate, most substantive debate for Cory Booker. If the debates move poll numbers, then Cory Booker’s numbers should move tonight.

Chris Matthews on MSNBC: Cory Booker, you inspired us tonight.

The Hill: Booker hits fundraising threshold for December debate after surge of post-debate donations
White House hopeful Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) hit the fundraising threshold for the December primary debate after seeing a spike in donations following his appearance at Wednesday night’s debate.

The New Jersey senator raised more than $500,000 since last night’s event, marking the campaign's best nine hours of fundraising to date, his campaign announced Thursday. The spike helped Booker cross the 200,000 unique donor threshold needed to qualify for the December debate in Los Angeles.

“Last night on the debate stage, Cory Booker set himself apart from other Democrats in the field by showing how his lived experiences make him the best candidate to unite the party and beat Donald Trump,” said Booker’s campaign manager Addisu Demissie. “Cory’s message clearly struck a chord with Democratic voters who want to make sure his voice is a part of the next debate.”

NJ.com: Booker raises more than $500K in nine hours after strong debate performance
Cory Booker’s strong performance Wednesday may help him return to the debate stage next month.

On a surge of fundraising following the fifth debate, the New Jersey senator met the first requirement for joining the other Democratic presidential candidates in Los Angeles next month.

The campaign announced Thursday that Booker now has received contributions from more than 200,000 unique donors. In the first nine hours since the debate ended, the campaign said it had brought in more than $500,000, much of it first-time contributors.

“Cory’s message clearly struck a chord with Democratic voters who want to make sure his voice is a part of the next debate," campaign manager Addisu Demissie said.
Washington Times: Cory Booker camp says he's hit the donor threshold for next debate
Though he has yet to hit the necessary polling thresholds, Sen. Cory A. Booker’s presidential campaign on Thursday said the New Jersey senator has secured enough contributions to meet the “unique donor” requirement for the Democratic presidential debate next month.

Mr. Booker’s campaign said that as of 7 a.m. Eastern Time, he has crossed the 200,000 “unique donor” threshold and that he has raised more than $500,000 in the nine hours since his closing statement at Wednesday’s debate.

In addition to the 200,000 unique donors, candidates need to hit at least 4% support in four qualifying national or early state polls, or 6% or more in two early state polls to make the next debate stage.

What People Are Saying About Pete Buttigieg’s Winning Debate Performance

“The South Bend Mayor is having a moment” … “The big winner tonight was Mayor Pete” … “Winner”... “Mayor Pete had an exceptional night” … “@PeteButtigieg WON it” … “He's won every exchange on national security” … “Best: 1. Buttigieg” … “Demonstrated again that he is one of the best debaters” … “Buttigieg has been good in the debates, and now he’s got real momentum in the first contest in Iowa” … “He had a really good night” … “He's very talented at deflecting and addressing criticisms” … “Likely to sustain the momentum his campaign has been seeing”

    From TV:

    Terry McAuliffe on CNN Post-Debate:

I think the big winner tonight, I think, was Mayor Pete because everybody talked all day how everybody was going to go after him -- he didn't get touched tonight. So if you're now the leader in
Iowa, you're coming out of this debate, we're not going to have another one for a month, that's some pretty good running room.

    Claire McCaskill on MSNBC Post-Debate:

I think Mayor Pete did have a great night. He showed he could pivot and punch, which you're going to have to be able to do with Donald Trump. In a debate, you're going to have to pivot and punch, and he did that very quickly with Tulsi Gabbard when she went after him with something that was just a bogus attack.

    Steve Schmidt on MSNBC Post-Debate:

I thought that Mayor Pete had an exceptional night. I think he really demonstrated tonight, in a performance that was pretty flawless, why he has risen into the top tier of candidates.

    Claire McCaskill on Morning Joe:

I almost wish, in a way, that we could have seen Mayor Pete respond to more incoming. I think he's
very talented at deflecting and addressing criticisms. He had a little bit, and I thought he did well when he got those. But you know, we can compare and contrast -- yeah, 11,000 votes as a mayor -- but a member of the intelligence community [...] I think the depth and breadth of his experience in the military, as a small town mayor, that's the kind of stuff that -- you know, people out there don't like Washington, Joe. I know this is a newsflash, I know you get this and a lot of people get this, but Washington is a terrible place to be from right now for most voters. And the fact that he is really one of the few true outsiders in the race, he can work to his advantage as long as he leans heavily on his military experience.

    Excerpts:

ABC: Mayor Buttigieg, under pressure as a newly crowned frontrunner, stood tall

ABC: Over the past month since the October debate, Pete Buttigieg, a small-city mayor, has spent his time on the campaign trail cementing his status as a top contender. Wednesday night, the mayor was forced to defend his credentials.

Washington Post: Winners: Pete Buttigieg: Buttigieg has been good in the debates, and now he’s got real momentum in the first contest in Iowa, where a Des Moines Register-CNN poll showed him up nine points there last week. The question has been how he would handle the newfound pressure — and answer questions about whether a young, small-town mayor has the gravitas to win the presidency.”

Vox: Winner: Pete Buttigieg: The South Bend, Indiana, mayor is having a moment ... At Wednesday’s debate, Buttigieg had one goal: keep that momentum going. He succeeded. Throughout the debate, Buttigieg avoided attacks from his high-polling opponents on the debate stage, while using his time to push his message as an outsider and a more moderate candidate who could unite the country.

NBC: “Buttigieg, newly minted front-runner, escapes fifth debate unscathed.”

Pete Buttigieg had a target on his back and no one really even tried to hit it… The only candidate who made a direct attack on the mayor was Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii. But he appeared to win the crowd back to his side and pummeled Gabbard’s question to him as “outlandish,” becoming the first candidate to hit her in a debate for meeting with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

If nothing else, the exchange, in the final moments of the debate, allowed a young candidate best known for being pleasant to bare fangs that many may not have known he had — a warning to those who may consider coming after him next.

The Hill: The debate had some fireworks, but nothing that seemed consequential or viral enough to change the trajectory of the race. That is good news for South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who has been on the rise.

Reuters: When questions came his way, Buttigieg parried the thrusts in a way likely to sustain the momentum his campaign has been seeing over the past several weeks, analysts said.

“He had a really good night,” said David Brock, a longtime Democratic operative and founder of the Super PAC American Bridge, which supports Democratic candidates. “He had never been more under the microscope than he had been tonight.”

Newsweek: Mayor Pete's Enduring Endearment: [...] Buttigieg hit all his talking points, kept his cool, and even managed to squeeze in a line that Forbes had ranked him as "literally the least wealthy person on this stage."

    From Twitter:

    Chris Cillizza @CillizzaCNN: Best: 1. Buttigieg 2. Yang 3. Klobuchar 4. Warren 5. Biden

Mo Elleithee @MoElleithee: .@PeteButtigieg demonstrated again that he is one of the best debaters in the field. He escaped major criticism, and took almost every opportunity to make his answers about people instead of himself.

Donna Brazile @donnabrazile: Thank you @PeteButtigieg, we know you have a big heart. Tell it. Talk about your faith. And the actions that you have taken to break down barriers. #DemocraticDebate

Matt Lewis @mattklewis: Mayor Pete wins the night--because nothing slowed his momentum. Klobuchar was a strong second.

Tiffany Cross @TiffanyDCross: Gotta say @PeteButtigieg is good on the debate stage. #DemDebate

Philip Klein @philipaklein: Wow, Buttigieg crushed Gabbard on that exchange.

Neera Tanden @neeratanden: Gotta say @PeteButtigieg just killed @TulsiGabbard. Plain and simple.

Sabrina Siddiqui @SabrinaSissiqui: Pete Buttigieg takes Tulsi Gabbard to task over her meeting with Bashar al-Assad: "If you want to talk about experience, let’s talk about judgment … I have enough judgment [that] I would not have sat down with a murderous dictator like that.” #DemDebate

Ameshia Cross @AmeshiaCross: Traditional, Washingtonian experience isn't what is needed to defeat Trump. Americans want someone who can meet the needs of their communities, someone who understands politics is local and someone who has on the ground experience. @PeteButtigieg answered perfectly #DemDebate

Ana Navarro-Cárdenas @ananavaroo: @PeteButtigieg delivered a good zinger: “On This stage,
there’s over 100 years of Washington experience, and where has that
    gotten us?”

Frank LuntzLisa Conley @LNConley: Mayor Pete: "I do sometimes feel like a stranger in my own
country," he said, in reference to LGBTQ+ rights. #DemDebate

Naveed Jamali @NaveedAJamali: A genuine answer by @PeteButtigieg about how protecting rights of people, “even if they don’t look like me.” A definitely inspiring moment. #DemocraticDebate

Rep. Carlos G Smith @CarlosGSmith: No one ever really has perfect debate. That being said, @PeteButtigieg WON it. He's surging in IA and NH. Attacks came predictably, but were swatted down hard. Tonight was the night to breakaway. He did it. #DemDebate

Noah Rothman @NoahCRothman: One thing you have to love about Buttigieg: He's won every exchange on national security and he's done so by advocating for an extroverted foreign policy.

Alex Ward @AlexWardVox: Gabbard’s attack on Buttigieg was BS. In context his statement about security cooperation and when he might send troops to Mexico makes complete sense.

Kurt Bardella @kurtbardella: I don’t think I’ve ever seen @PeteButtigieg give a bad answer in a debate ... if he had the chance to take on @realDonaldTrump in a one-on-one debate, I think Pete would absolutely destroy Trump to the point where he would never politically or emotionally recover #DemDebates

On Latina Equal Pay Day, she brought up paid family leave, equal pay, and fighting for economic justice for women. Her message was strong and clear. We need more candidates willing to fight to close the gap in pay and resources in the workplace for women.”

She will make us proud as our nominee and president.”

      group, but for the people.”

    Amy for America
For Immediate Release: November 21, 2019

ICYMI: Klobuchar Wins Big In Fifth Democratic Debate

ATLANTA, GA  — After a standout performance last night from Senator Amy Klobuchar at the fifth Democratic presidential debate in Georgia, numerous outlets, strategists, and media personalities heaped on praise. The Washington PostCNN and USA Today all declared Senator Klobuchar as one of the winners of the night, with The New York Times writing, “Klobuchar had her best debate yet” and The Boston Globe writing, “if there was one candidate who had a better debate than the others, it was Klobuchar.”

    See what others are saying:

The New York Times: “Klobuchar had her best debate yet”

The Washington Post: “Winners: Amy Klobuchar”

The Boston Globe: “If there was one candidate who had a better debate than the others, it was Klobuchar. She entered the debate with some momentum after a strong October debate performance and she will likely build her momentum after this debate. She was funny, pointed, and injected herself in the debate in just the right way. Klobuchar is far from being the nominee, but she just separated herself from the lower tier.”

CNN: “Winners - Amy Klobuchar: The Minnesota senator has been desperately searching for a moment over the first four debates -- and she might just have found one Wednesday night. Klobuchar was one of the few people on stage to take on South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (more on that below) and her point about a woman -- still -- not being elected president was strong: "If you think a woman can't beat Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi does it every day," she said. Klobuchar's biggest issue is that the pragmatic center lane has been dominated by Buttigieg and former Vice President Joe Biden. Her performance on Wednesday night might just change that.”

The Washington Post: “Klobuchar had another outstanding performance. She made clear there is a double-standard for female candidates: “Women are held to a higher standard. Otherwise we could play a game called name your favorite woman president.” She struck gold with one of her favorite lines: “If you think a woman can’t beat Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi does it every single day.” Asked about family leave, she defended a three-month leave plan, stressing the importance of fiscal responsibility and realistic proposals (knocking free college for everyone). On foreign policy, she spoke in favor of the New START accord and formulating a coherent Middle East policy. She tested out her argument against Trump in the general election. (She made the case that voters are with Democrats on Roe and Planned Parenthood.) She made a pitch for her own experience, doing something on honest ads.”

CNN: “Sen. Amy Klobuchar came ready to debate”

USA Today: “Winners - Amy Klobuchar: The Minnesota Senator was ready Wednesday night. She got laughs and cheers for her answer when asked to follow up about her recent comments that a female candidate with Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s experience probably would not have made it to the debate stage. After clarifying that she believes Buttigieg is indeed qualified to be at the debate, she doubled down on her belief that women are held to a different standard.”

The New York Times: “Yet for all the candidates onstage — whether fighting for relevance, qualification for future debates or a polling lead — the forum supplied a crucial opportunity for airtime, and to test out new jokes or dust off old material. Ms. Klobuchar had a chance to deploy a well-practiced bit: ‘My first Senate race I literally called everyone I knew and I raised $17,000 from ex-boyfriends,” she said. “And I’d like to point out it is not an expanding base.’”

Now This: “Amy Klobuchar on Double Standards for Women at the Democratic Debate”

McClatchy DC: “Enter Klobuchar, the Minnesota senator who filled the void with a punchy pitch for a moderate, but serious Democrat with a capacity to deploy a memorable. one-liner...She even easily fielded a question on foreign policy -- a topic that tangles up many contenders -- with a comprehensive answer that demonstrated confidence to be commander-in-chief.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune: “Minnesota U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, trying to build on a recent bounce in the polls, sought to make her mark as a unity candidate Wednesday night in the fifth debate of the Democratic presidential primary contest.”

Mother Jones: “During the Democrat debate on Wednesday night, presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar brought gender disparity in politics to the center stage. When Andrea Mitchell asked Klobuchar to clarify a statement she’d made about the heightened standards women face to achieve the same accomplishments as men, she didn’t mince her words. ‘What I said was true. Women are held to a higher standard, otherwise we could play a game called name your favorite woman president.’”

CBS News: “Amy Klobuchar rebuffs notion that a woman can't beat Trump, says Pelosi does it every day”

The New York Times: ‘Women Are Held to a Higher Standard,’ Klobuchar Says at Debate

The Hill: Klobuchar shuts down idea a woman can't beat Trump: 'Pelosi does it every day'

CNN: Klobuchar: "Women are held to a higher standard"

    From Twitter:

Annie Linskey: “So far Klobuchar is having her strongest debate, showing flashes of humor and also serious policy ideas. And getting a lot of time.”

Ed O'Keefe: “That @amyklobuchar answer was quite the mic drop. Clearly prepared for the question, she delivered one of the most succinct debate-stage sales pitches we’ve seen at any of these fight nights. #DemDebate”

Mo Elleithee: “.@amyklobuchar is the most underrated debater in the field. She has had standout moments in every single debate, delivering answers that are substantive, powerful and personal. And she knows how to draw contrast without coming across as negative. She’s very good in this format.”

John Harwood: “Amy Klobuchar is having a good night”

Eric Bradner: “Klobuchar could be having the best night so far. Her last answer took aim at Medicare for All and free college tuition proposals. "I’m not going to go for things just because they sound good on a bumper sticker and then throw in a free car," she said.”

    Donna Brazile: “@amyklobuchar got game.”

Ryan Lizza: “Klobuchar is having a good night. A lot of the debates showcase the more left candidates defending their ideas with more passion and inspiration and the centrists sniping at them. She actually makes an impassioned case for her ideas, which just happen to be more moderate.”

Ruth Marcus: “I think @amyklobuchar is having a good night.”

Christopher J. Hale: “.@AmyKlobuchar makes a strong appeal for an inclusive Democratic Party that reaches out to millions of swing voters and disaffected Republicans. She’s right: that’s the only way to beat President Trump next November.”

Garance Franke-Ruta: “Amy Klobuchar is ON tonight. #DemDebate”

Jennifer Rubin: “Klobuchar movingly spoke of Vindman, ending an excellent performance”

Lynn Sweet: “.@amyklobuchar answers are strong because she keeps bringing it back to how that issue - and with her as the nominee - could beat Trump. #DemocraticDebate”

NARAL: .@amyklobuchar: “I predict this will be a big issue in the general election...the people are with us. Over 70% of the people support Roe v. Wade. Over 90% support funding for Planned Parenthood and making sure that women can get the healthcare they need.”

Josh Douglas: “Klobuchar is having a good night in focusing on democracy reform. #DemocraticDebate”

Ilyse Hogue: “.@amyklobuchar is oh so right. The country is with us on supporting legal access to abortion as a fundamental freedom. 7 in 10 Americans support abortion access. I also want Trump to know this is why he loses. #AskAboutAbortion #DemocraticDebate”

NDRC: “Thank you, @amyklobuchar for being the first candidate to speak out on the harmfulness of gerrymandering to our democracy! Gerrymandering is a civil rights issue. #DemDebate #AskAboutDemocracy

Harry Enten: “Statistically speaking, it is the easiest to make the case for Klobuchar's electability. Over and over again, she's beat the Dem baseline in a Midwest state Trump lost less than 2 pts.”

Michael Geheren: “I've noticed @amyklobuchar mention farmers twice. I don't believe I have heard any other candidate mention farmers. Farmers in Minnesota and across the country are caught in the middle of a trade dispute. #DemDebate”

End Citizens United: “Thank you, @amyklobuchar. It's time to overturn Citizens United. #ReformFirst #DemDebate”

Robert Reich: “Excellent answer from Klobuchar: "We’d be playing the game 'name your favorite woman president.'" "If you think a woman can’t beat Trump, Pelosi does it every day.” Best line of night so far. #DemDebate”

Ali Vitali: “It's pretty amazing to see this conversation about politics and gender playing out in primetime during a big debate. Gender has been one of the underpinnings of this (and last!) election cycles. Klobuchar speaking to this directly on the stage is so important. #DemDebate”

Charlotte Clymer: “"If you don't think a woman can defeat Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi does it every day." Damn good line from Klobuchar. #DemDebate”

Terrell J. Starr: “So, Amy Klobuchar is having a great night. A really great night. #DemDebate”

Jonathan Capehart: “Amy Klobuchar showing why she’s on the debate stage. #democraticdebate”

Katie Hill: “And @amyklobuchar ftw talking about how she raised $17k from ex-boyfriends. #calltime #demdebate”

Khushbu Shah: “Best line of all of the debates so far from Amy Klobuchar: "I set a record. I raised $17,000 from ex-boyfriends"”

Emily Badger: “I think Amy Klobuchar right now is the first time in any debate this year we're hearing about voting rights.”

Rebecca Morin: “Klobuchar was the first candidate on stage to mention Stacey Abrams!”

Tom Steyer Lays Out Bold Vision for Structural Reform, Climate, and the Economy

Steyer draws sharp contrast from the rest of the field on term limits, climate, and the economy

(ATLANTA, GA, November 20, 2019) — Tonight, presidential candidate for the Democratic nomination Tom Steyer took to the debate stage for a second time, stressing the need for real structural reforms by calling for term limits and showing true leadership on climate change.

“We’re going to need new and different people in charge. I'm the only person on this stage who will talk about term limits. Vice President Biden won't, Senator Sanders won't. Even Pete Buttigieg won’t. I will let the American people pass laws themselves through direct democracy. It's time to push the power back to the people and away from D.C,” said Steyer.

Steyer once again rang the alarm on the increasingly urgent threat of a serious climate crisis,  emphasizing his continued commitment to bold action on climate change, and differentiating himself from the rest of the candidates. Steyer echoed his pledge to make climate his top priority by calling it a national emergency on day one of his administration to highlight it as our nation’s biggest opportunity to rebuild our nation and restore our economy.

“Congress has never passed an important climate bill ever. This is a problem which continues to get worse…” said Steyer. “I'm the only person on this stage that will say climate is the number one priority for me... It's a state of emergency, and I would declare a state of emergency on day one.”

Steyer knows that Trump and his corrupt Republican enablers are going to run for election on the economy. His background and experience as a self made businessman and job creator clearly illustrate for the American public how Steyer is uniquely qualified to uncover Trump’s fraudulent, and criminal behaviors, that have only favored the rich and corporations the most.

“Whoever of us is the Ddemocratic nominee is going to have to face Mr. Trump ...and talk about the economy, talk about growth… expose Mr. Trump for what he is, a fraud and a failure, on the economy,” Steyer said.

Steyer was the first candidate to come out calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump and one of the first candidates to propose a wealth tax. Steyer has met the polling requirements for the December debate stage, and remains steadfast in sharing his vision of putting the American people first.

What They’re Saying: Julián Castro Trends Worldwide During Democratic Debate He Did Not Participate In

SAN ANTONIO, TX (November 21, 2019) – On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, presidential candidate, former Obama Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Julián Castro, trended on Twitter nationally during the Democratic debate in Atlanta as many of the issues he has led the field on were discussed on stage. Secretary Castro had the biggest fundraising day of the month, raising more during the Atlanta debate night than either of the last two Democratic debates that he took part in.

Although Secretary Castro did not secure the necessary polling to secure his spot on stage, "Julian Castro" trended #14 in the nation and "#JulianDebates" trended #17. Secretary Castro has led the field on issues like immigration, housing, criminal justice, race, and reproductive justice--issues that were discussed on stage during last night's debate.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the things supporters, activists, journalists, and voters said about Secretary Castro’s absence on stage:

“I find myself really missing Julian Castro tonight on many levels--including that no one has talked about #immigration at all. Sure hope these moderators plan to ask about that. #DemDebates,” said U.S. Congressmember Pramila Jayapal (WA-07)

“-- Former Secretary of a $46 billion federal agency under Pres. Obama
-- Former Mayor of the 7th largest U.S. city
-- Degrees from Stanford and Harvard Law
-- centers vulnerable communities in platform

Why isn't Julian Castro here tonight?

#JulianDebates #DemDebate,” said Charlotte Clymer, activist and communications for the Human Rights Campaign.

“I miss @JulianCastro on this stage. #JulianDebates,” said Abdul El-Sayed, candidate in Michigan's 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary election, Public Health Doctor, Host of America Dissected.

“Castro is noticeably missing tonight. I just threw in a few bucks to help him get back on stage in December, said Ezra Levin, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible.

“There’s no denying @JulianCastro is an important voice in this race. Centering communities of color, saying the names of black trans womxn, calling police violence gun violence - he belongs on the #DemDebate stage,” said former DA candidate Tiffany Cabán

“Ironically, by not being in the debate last night, Julian Castro had his best debate performance yet. It's a weird thing to say, but he was universally missed, was on fire chiming in from Twitter, and racked up a ton of small-donor donations,” said Adam Best, Founder and CEO of The Left.

“Congrats to @JulianCastro for winning this debate,” said journalist David Perry.

“I want Castro back on the debate stage. He's consistently speaking on poverty & race in a way that's important,” said artist Bree Newsome Bass

“Despite not being on stage, on issue after issue @JulianCastro undoubtedly shaped the narrative of the debate," said Latino Victory.

“Last word from me... @JulianCastro was missed tonight. I missed his voice, his clarity, his conviction. Looking forward to him being on stage next month,” said Adrianne Shropshire, Executive Director of Vote Black PAC.

“Missing @JulianCastro on the debate stage. #JulianDebates,” said Ai-Jen Poo, Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance

“There were so many moments where @JulianCastro’s voice was obviously and sorely missed on that stage. #JulianDebates #DemocraticDebate,” said Linda Sarsour, Award winning racial justice and civil rights activist.

“@JulianCastro was not on the stage tonight, but his presence was felt. His policies helped shaped the narrative. Some of what we heard from others we've previously heard from him,” said April Reign, activist and creator of #OscarSoWhite.

“Julián Castro should be on this stage, certainly over several of these  candidates. He has been humbly and sincerely using his candidacy to lift up issues and lift up communities. #DemDebate #JuliánDebates,” said Kumar Rao, Lawyer for Center for Popular Democracy

“.@JulianCastro answered every #DemDebate question live on Twitter, and it's way better than the actual debate,” said Nadia Petschek Rawls, Editorial Director of Growth at Medium.

Governor Bullock’s Statement on DNC Debate

Helena, MT – After tonight’s Democratic debate, Montana Governor Steve Bullock released the following statement:

“Missing from tonight’s debate was any meaningful discussion on how we are going to win back the places we lost in 2016,” said Montana Governor Steve Bullock. “In just the last two weeks, our Party has won big races in deep-red states by going everywhere and focusing on serious solutions that impact America’s’ daily lives. That’s how I was re-elected the same year that Trump won Montana by 20 points, and it’s how I’m going to win back the places we lost — and beat him in 2020.”

Delaney Statement on Fifth Presidential Debate

FRIENDSHIP HEIGHTS, MD - John Delaney releases the following statement:

"What was missing from the debate last night was a real discussion about jobs. Jobs and economic security remain the priority for American families and we need a candidate that has plans to encourage entrepreneurship, bring jobs to struggling rural communities, and grow wages - that's how we beat Trump and that's how we help hardworking Americans. As the only candidate who was successful in business and in government, I have real solutions to these issues."

Community Groups Write an Open Letter to MSNBC President about Unfair Coverage of Andrew Yang, 2020 Presidential Candidate

Sacramento, Calif. — A coalition of 23 community nonprofit organizations representing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders released an open letter to MSNBC President Phil Griffin raising concerns about MSNBC’s lack of coverage of Andrew Yang, 2020 presidential candidate, and the potential damage to the American democracy and racial equality; they urge MSNBC to provide fair coverage to all candidates. Over 1000 businesses, organizations and individuals expressed support for the letter, which is below.

    Phil Griffin
    President, MSNBC
    30 Rockefeller Plaza
    New York, NY 10112

    Dear Mr. Griffin,

Under your leadership, MSNBC has become one of America’s most influential cable news networks and attracts hundreds of millions of viewers. Congratulations on hosting the fifth Democratic Presidential Debate. We are community nonprofit organizations that do not intend to support or oppose any particular candidate here but would like to raise our concerns and register our displeasure about your network’s unfair treatment of Mr. Andrew Yang, the first Asian American man to run for president as a Democrat in our nation’s history.

Mr. Yang was one of the 10 presidential candidates that participated in the debate in Atlanta on November 20, 2019. The American people expected each candidate would receive a relatively equal amount of time to share their ideas on how to run our country as president, but MSNBC moderators did not let Mr. Yang speak for the first 32 minutes of the two-hour debate. CNN reported Mr. Yang only received 6.8 minutes speaking time, barely over half of the time Sen. Warren spoke (13.4 minutes). In addition, it’s reported MSNBC left Mr. Yang out 15 times in its coverage of presidential candidates, while including others who polled lower.

We were troubled by these oversights and equally worried about their damage to MSNBC’s credibility, to the American democracy, and to this country’s racial equality. Following the debate, many media outlets reported that Andrew Yang was “ignored” or had a “lack of speaking time”. Mr. Yang is one of the eight candidates that qualified for all five debates per DNC rules.

REALCLEARPOLITICS’ NATIONAL POLLING AVERAGE shows Mr. Yang at 3%, ahead of three sitting senators, two House members, a governor and Mr. Mike Bloomberg. Depriving Mr. Yang of a fair share of airtime during the debate is depriving the American people of the fair opportunity to learn about a qualified candidate, and thus compromising our democracy. Furthermore, as we are embracing diversity and inclusion, MSNBC’s lack of coverage of Mr. Yang may deepen this country’s racial inequality, and also play right into the books of those who attack media as “Fake News”.

There are over 22 million Asian Americans in the U.S., which is the fastest-growing ethnic group in our country; 51% of Asian Americans have a bachelor’s degree or higher. It’s reported 43% of MSNBC’s audience has a bachelor’s degree or higher. The run for president by three Asian Americans, Sen. Kamala Harris, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Mr. Andrew Yang, has elevated Asian Americans’ participation in politics and civic affairs to a historical new height. Overlooking Mr. Yang’s candidacy in reporting the 2020 presidential election will lead to millions of Americans being uninformed and adversely impact our democracy.

    We request that MSNBC

    • Give all the presidential candidates fair coverage, and
    • Investigate the root causes of the incidents listed above about Andrew Yang and take corrective actions accordingly.
Thank you for your consideration. Please contact Joel Wong at (510) 999-5763 or JOELWONG@COMCAST.NET if you have any questions. We are looking forward to seeing MSNBC’s fair, transparent coverage of the 2020 elections and other important issues, and ongoing dialogue to ensure the public trust of media and other institutions.
