Cory 2020 Campaign Manager Addisu Demissie Statement on Fourth Democratic Primary Debate

Newark, NJ — Cory 2020 Campaign Manager Addisu Demissie issued the following statement on Cory Booker’s performance in the fourth Democratic debate:

“Even on this historically crowded stage but, Cory won the night by standing out as a leader, a unifier, and the adult in the room who refocused the conversation on the issues that matter most.

“Cory was a breath of fresh air on the stage, particularly by coming to Vice President Biden’s defense against Trump’s lies and highlighting issues that aren’t getting enough attention in this presidential campaign, like women’s reproductive health care, strengthening unions, and ending child poverty.

“For yet another debate, Cory showed a national audience that he can unite our country and make real change for Americans who face injustice and seek opportunity.

“As Cory said, the next president ‘is going to have to be one amongst us Democrats that can unite us all, not throw elbows.’”

What They’re Saying: “Booker’s positivity is shining,” “Dead On,” “This is the Cory Booker I Love”

Newark, NJ — On the largest debate stage in presidential debate history, Cory stood out by standing out as a leader, a unifier, and the adult in the room who refocused the conversation on the issues that matter most.

For yet another debate, Cory showed a national audience that he can unite our country and make real change for Americans who face injustice and seek opportunity.

Here’s what people are saying about Cory Booker’s performance tonight:

    Robert Reich
@RBReich: Booker is right that the Dems have to conduct the impeachment process in what appears to be an impartial way, and good to mention morality behind this.

    Robert Costa
@costareports: Booker calling for impeachment process to be "honorable." Calls it a "moral moment." Echoes how Speaker Pelosi describes her position -- shrugging off politics, solemn tone.

    Megan McArdle
@asymmetricinfo: Booker makes a stirring speech in favor of a non-partisan impeachment process, by far the best answer given to the impeachment question tonight. The question is whether primary voters want an above-it-all conciliator or a partisan no-holds-barred fighter.

    Yamiche Alcindor
@Yamiche: Cory Booker getting BIG applauses after saying this: "God bless Kamala but women should not be the only ones taking up this fight (on women's reproductive rights) ... It's because women are people and people deserve to control their own bodies."

    Jess Morales Rocketto
@JessLivMo: Excellent way for Booker to talk to voters he wants to talk to while building on Harris' answer. Strong way to talk to women as only he can without being anti-feminist. #DemDebate

    Cheryl Strayed
@CherylStrayed: Thank you @CoryBooker for making the point that reproductive rights don't just matter to women. Time for men to STEP UP.

    Ilyse Hogue
@ilyseh: "Women are people and people deserve to control their own bodies!" thank you @CoryBooker always speaking truth and making sure that women aren't the only ones speaking about reproductive oppression. #AskAboutAbortion #DemocraticDebate

    Maria Shriver
@mariashriver: .@CoryBooker brings up women's reproductive rights, says women are people and people deserve to control their own bodies #DemocraticDebate #DemDebate

    Matt Rogers
@Politidope: I'm glad @CoryBooker is in the race. Always a breath of fresh air.

    Sally Kohn
@sallykohn: And THANK YOU @CoryBooker for bringing up abortion rights AND saying that it shouldn't just be on women to always bring it up.  YES!!!
    #DemDebate #DemocraticDebate

    Amanda Renteria
@AmandaRenteria:hearts: to @CoryBooker who calls out allies “Women should not be the only one taking up this cause!” (Ref: women’s rights) #DemocraticDebate

    Valerie Jarrett
@ValerieJarrett: “Women should not be the only ones taking up this fight” @CoryBooker :skin-tone-4::+1::skin-tone-4::muscle::skin-tone-4:

    Michael Skolnik
@MichaelSkolnik: I respect @CoryBooker for defending Joe Biden (that is what all Democrats should do tonight) and as a male ally standing up for women. Dude is solid. #DemDebate

    Greg Sargent
@ThePlumLineGS: Terrific @CoryBooker defense of @JoeBiden there. Key point: Don't launder Trump's bad faith lies and disinformation for him! Just don't do it!

    Jason Johnson
@DrJasonJohnson@CoryBooker just gave the BEST answer on Healthcare from that whole segment...
    #DemDebate

    DanielleMoodie-Mills
@DeeTwoCents: Come on @CoryBooker! That pivot back to women’s reproductive health and playing into #Trump’s hands was GOOOD! #DemDebate #WokeAF

    Supermajority
@supermajority: Thanks @CoryBooker, too! You're right—everyone should be talking about this, not just women. #DemDebate #DemocraticDebate

    Philippe Reines
@PhilippeReines: .@CoryBooker is 10000% right: @andersoncooper’s question to Joe Biden about ethics charges is exactly why trump makes shit up out of thin air.
The media is so worried about being called liberal they go overboard proving they’re not. In doing so, they are not being journalists.

    Patricia Arquette
@PattyArquette@CoryBooker Thank you for standing up for Women’s rights!

    Renee Bracey Sherman
@RBraceySherman: Shoutout to Senator Cory Booker for saying that men need to stand up and fight for access to reproductive rights and not just because people who need and have abortions are related to us. We are human beings. #AskAboutAbortion

    Arianna Huffington
@ariannahuff: Great point from @CoryBooker on reproductive rights: "women should not be the only ones taking up this fight” #DemocraticDebate

    Freda Moon
@fredamoon: Great, now I want a time machine just so I can go back, take my donation to @PeteButtigieg and give it to @CoryBooker.

    Michael Linden
@MichaelSLinden: Agree with @CoryBooker that trade deals need to put workers at the center. Trade deals that empower corporations is just more of the same.

    Jason Johnson
@DrJasonJohnson@CoryBooker raised 2 million in about 10 days by saying whether he wins or loses, the debates are better with his voice in them. He's proved that tonight...
    #DemDebate

    Assemblywoman Brittney Miller
@BrittMiller4AD5: "....women should not be the only ones taking up this cause or this fight...." -@CoryBooker
    My father would've agreed!
    #DemocraticDebate  #DemDebate

    Kelly Dittmar
@kdittmar: Yo. @CoryBooker got the memo. It should not be up to women to address issues of gender equity and reproductive rights. #GenderLens2020 #DemDebate

    Zerlina Maxwell
@ZerlinaMaxwell: What Cory just did is so important so don’t miss it.
He said men shouldn’t be allies bc women are our daughters and sisters, it’s because WOMEN ARE PEOPLE #DemDebate

    Emma Gray
@emmaladyrose: Very important that Booker is calling out the Hyde Amendment specifically. #DemDebate

    Alexis McGill Johnson
@alexismcgill: We cannot let what’s happening to thousands of patients in Cincinnati happen to millions more across the country. Thank you, @CoryBooker. #AskAboutAbortion #DemDebate https://twitter.com/ppmn/status/1184268840290660352

    Ilyse Hogue
@ilyseh: .@CoryBooker will create a White House Office on Reproductive Freedom, removing Hyde and calling attacks on reproductive freedom what they are, part of entrenched poverty.

    Shauna
@goldengateblond: I so appreciate Booker saying something that’s rarely mentioned: The attack on choice is not just an attack on women (and it is), it’s an attack on the poor. #DemocraticDebate

    Catherynne Valente
@catvalente: Again, Booker saying the right thing. It’s real weird that a dude is the one advocating for an office of reproductive rights in the white house. Kamala should have had that. #DemDebate

    Yasmin Radjy
@yasminradjy: Omg @CoryBooker is going to create an office of repro policy omg omg #DemDebate THIS IS WHY WE #ASKABOUTABORTION

    Ilyse Hogue
@ilyseh: .@CoryBooker will create a White House Office on Reproductive Freedom, removing Hyde and calling attacks on reproductive freedom what they are, part of entrenched poverty.

    Policy Matters Ohio
@PolicyMattersOH: Great to hear @CoryBooker talking about raising the minimum wage to $15/hr.
Passing the Raise the Wage Act would give 1.8 million Ohioans a raise by 2025.
    #DemocraticDebate

    Fight For 15
@fightfor15: In the #DemDebate, Sen. @CoryBooker calls for raising the minimum wage to $15, strengthening unions, and calls for sectoral bargaining so that workers can set minimum standards throughout an industry
These are some of the pillars of the #UnionsForAll platform we're fighting for

    SEIU
@SEIU: .@CoryBooker is right to call for sectoral bargaining so working people can bargain better wages and better jobs #UnionsForAll #DemDebate https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EG9hRIUXkAA6sOJ.jpg

    UFCW
@UFCW: .@CoryBooker: As president I would strengthen #unions to improve working conditions for all Americans from @UAW workers at @GM to fast food workers leading #FightFor15.
We need to stand up for #UnionsForAll so every American has a living wage in this country. #DemDebate #1u

    Randi Weingarten
@rweingarten: Thank you @CoryBooker for the bold statement on unions and the need for sectoral bargaining. #DemDebate  #AFTvotes

    Robert Reich
@RBReich: Booker puts child poverty on the table. Good! We need to talk about the fact that 1 out of 5 children in America is in poverty -- a scandal in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world.

    Rebecca Vallas
@rebeccavallas: Props to @CoryBooker for bringing up child poverty in tonight's #DemDebate.
Reminder of some of what's in his child poverty plan:
    - young child tax credit for families with kids under 5
    - 30% boost to SNAP
    - long-overdue increase in TANF funding
    - 7.3 million fewer poor kids

    Change.org
@Change: Thank you @CoryBooker for acknowledging this, and for responding to the movement of people led by an 18-year-old child poverty survivor demanding candidates be asked a question about child poverty: http://www.change.org/ChildPovertyQuestionhttps://twitter.com/CoryBooker/status/1184275001899470850

    Spotlight on Poverty
@povertynews: "We've had 20 years of presidential debates and we have never talked about the violence in America of #childpoverty." @CoryBooker raises a topic at #DemDebate that deserves so much more attention.

    Charlotte Alter
@CharlotteAlter: Booker is the only candidate who has been regularly talking about extreme poverty, not just income inequality #DemocraticDebate

    Nicholas Kristof
@NickKristof: Cory Booker is also right that there is good evidence that licensing to own guns (as is the case in 15 states) reduces gun violence.

    Everytown
@Everytown: “There are more duck and cover drills and shelter in place drills in America now than fire drills.” - @CoryBooker #DemDebate
75% of high school students cited mass shootings as a primary source of stress. They deserve better.

    The Trace
@teamtrace: Cory Booker is highlighting the disproportionate impact gun violence has on low-income communities of color like his at the #DemDebate.
Those communities are tired of being left out of the gun debate. But the tide may finally be turning. https://www.thetrace.org/2019/10/community-gun-violence-democratic-forum/

    March For Our Lives
@AMarch4OurLives: There are more duck and cover drills… than fire drills.”
We agree with @CoryBooker – our inability to protect our students and communities from gun violence is sickening. We need comprehensive action to end gun violence in every community.

    Newtown Action
@NewtownAction: 11) @CoryBooker was the first to support federal licensing for gun ownership. Here is his comprehensive plan to #EndGunViolence: https://medium.com/@corybooker/corys-plan-to-end-the-gun-violence-epidemic-ab377d9fb112 #DemDebate @CNN @nytimeshttps://pbs.twimg.com/media/EG92ErLXkAAoOUV.jpg

    EJ Dionne
@EJDionne: .@CoryBooker is having a very good night. His answer on health care appealed to a lot of Democratic women. A moment ago he gave the strongest shoutout of the night to the unions & their importance.

    Maria Shriver
@mariashriver: Bravo @CoryBooker who says we have one shot at making @realDonaldTrump a one term President and how we talk to each other on this stage matters. Bravo! #DemDebate #DemocraticDebate

    Matt Rogers
@Politidope: Sending @CoryBooker $10 tonight so he's at the next debate keeping everybody chill again.

    Ben Wexler
@mrbenwexler: Sorry but @CoryBooker is massively underrated

    Megan McArdle
@asymmetricinfo: Booker makes a stirring speech in favor of a non-partisan impeachment process, by far the best answer given to the impeachment question tonight. The question is whether primary voters want an above-it-all conciliator or a partisan no-holds-barred fighter.

    Dave Pell
@davepell: Cory Booker’s strategy is dead-on for the general election.
Come together. Unify. Pull everyone up.
I did not believe that was the winning message at the campaign’s outset, but Cory has convinced me.
Hate, even hate of the other party, plays into Trump’s hands.

    Patricia Arquette
@PattyArquette@CoryBooker Thank you for pointing out that Trump has shown nothing but weakness towards Russia.

    Ahmed Baba
@AhmedBaba_: Cory Booker’s positivity is shining particularly bright tonight given the animosity on stage.
    #DemDebate

    Brittany Packnett Cunningham
@MsPackyetti: I know @CoryBooker decently well, and he genuinely believes in love and community. Him urging us to disagree and push one another with a level of respect isn’t pandering. It isn’t a line. He believes it. And I appreciate him being the adult on that.
    #DemocraticDebate #DemDebate

    Jerry Avenaim
@avenaim: Cory Booker has great energy tonight. He’s shining bright given the tensions onstage.
    #DemocraticDebate #DemDebate

    Indivisible Guide
@IndivisibleTeam: .@CoryBooker reminds us that this election is about centering who & what we're for. That's why we asked every candidate running for President to center the issues & focus on defeating Trump in 2020. Learn more about the pledge & take it for yourself here:

    Michael Wear
@MichaelRWear: This is the Cory Booker I love.

    Michael Skolnik
@MichaelSkolnik: Cory Booker is one incredible human being. What an amazing closing statement!! #DemDebate

    Sally Kohn
@sallykohn: Booker having a great close here with his “common struggles for common purpose” refrain — reminding Americans that heck yeah, we can do great things, and do them together. Honestly, I’m moved.
    #DemDebate #DemocraticDebate

    Donna Brazile
@donnabrazile: Thank you @CoryBooker for reminding us of the bigger purpose. #DemDebate #DemDebate4

Governor Bullock Statement on Tonight’s Democratic Debate

Helena, MT –  After another marathon Democratic debate more focused on landing viral soundbites than offering solutions to problems voters face every day, Montana Governor Steve Bullock released the following statement:

“Six debates in and the Democratic Party is still failing to speak to the challenges middle class families face every day. When 40% of Americans wouldn’t have $400 to spare in the event of an emergency, we need to be talking about serious solutions that will make people’s lives better in the here and now — not a decade down the line, and not after a hypothetical political revolution,” said Montana Governor Steve Bullock. “Voters are looking for a leader who isn’t detached from the realities that they face — and with 111 days left until the Iowa Caucus, I’m going to continue taking my case directly to them.”

What People Are Saying About How Pete Buttigieg Won The Debate

This was the single best moment of Buttigieg’s campaign for president” … “Buttigieg was a dominant and commanding force” … “Winner of tonight’s #DemDebate” ... “Buttigieg had a strong night and might have emerged as the winner of the debate” … “Had the best debate performance” … “Had a very strong night” … “Astonishingly articulate off-the-cuff” … “Buttigieg makes his mark”

Boston Globe: Grade: A. This was the single best moment of Buttigieg’s campaign for president. He did well on guns, on impeachment, and particularly on Syria. Buttigieg had been making the argument that he is the centrist where moderate Democrats can go if Biden fails. That came through Tuesday night. In this debate, he added a new layer to his national brand: outsider. He kept referring to how he was from “the industrial Midwest” and how Washington had not solved the problems facing a wide swath of the United States. Buttigieg won the debate.

NYT: “Buttigieg’s biggest night yet. It was Mr. Buttigieg’s exchange with Ms. Warren over “Medicare for all” that was most memorable, pressing her as she declined to say, yet again, whether her plan would require a middle-class tax increase. (She says her plan would curb middle-class “costs.”)... It felt at times on Tuesday as if the sprawling 12-person stage had actually narrowed to a four-person debate, with Ms. Warren and Mr. Sanders representing the left, and Mr. Biden and Mr. Buttigieg representing the center-left. The occasional television shot of just those four served to hammer home the point.”

The Hill: “Buttigieg had a strong night and might have emerged as the winner of the debate. The performance is well-timed for Buttigieg, who burst out of the gate … Tuesday night’s debate could give him a burst of momentum heading into the final months before the caucuses. Buttigieg went aggressively after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), accusing her of equivocating on the central question of whether taxes would have to be raised on the middle class to pay for her “Medicare for All” plan … Buttigieg also memorably clashed with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) over U.S. involvement in the Middle East, showcasing his foreign policy chops.”

CNN: “From beginning to end, Buttigieg was a dominant and commanding force … debates -- and primaries! -- are about drawing contrasts, and that is what Buttigieg did. And did very well.”

McClatchy: “Pete Buttigieg stepped up … More than in any previous debate, Buttigieg was central to the night’s biggest moments. He went toe-to-toe with Warren, abely fended off criticism from Gabbard, and even initiated a confrontation with O’Rourke on gun violence — a subject the former congressman needled Buttigieg over in the week leading up to the debate ... his most memorable moment may have come during an exchange with Gabbard, in which he defended the presence of some U.S. troops in the Middle East — and reminded the audience that he was a veteran who once served in Afghanistan.”

LA Times: “Buttigieg became a factor in the race, raising a ton of money and building himself one of the most formidable campaign operations in Iowa, the state that casts the first votes and, for many, is where their campaigns will do or die. He turned in his most pugnacious performance, challenging Warren’s support for Medicare-for-all, flaunting his outsider status by going after the Washington politicians on stage and trading his intellectual policy talk for a series of sharp-elbowed responses.”

USA TODAY: “Buttigieg was also ready to take some of his more progressive competitors to task on their policies. Buttigieg used forceful rhetoric during the debate.”

Business Insider: “Pete Buttigieg ... successfully landing punches on Warren over healthcare, on Gabbard over foreign policy, and on O'Rourke over gun control policy.”

    From TV:

Gloria Borger on CNN: “Pete Buttigieg I think had a very strong night […] Buttigieg is so crisp and sharp.”

Claire McCaskill on MSNBC: “He is kind of smooth in the way he communicates. He's not rough around the edges, but there's an eloquence to it.” [...] And I do think that his eloquence actually is authentic. I think he is-- It's a little bit like Barack Obama -- that Barack Obama had an ability when he was speaking, especially in speeches to kind of soar and inspire people. And I think Mayor Pete may do that.

Van Jones on CNN: Van Jones: Tonight was the night you saw Pete Buttigieg 2.0, passionate Pete, pistol Pete. And you could this thing shaping up as Warren versus Pete.

Van Jones on CNN: “I thought that Pete... you got a new candidate in this race: pistol Pete, passionate Pete -- not the polite Pete. He was tough on Syria, he was tough on guns, he went back at folks.”

David Axelrod on CNN: “For Buttigieg [...] his oratory as a veteran on what the meaning of the withdrawal from Syria was was one of the best moments of the night.”

    From Twitter:

Paul Begala @PaulBegala: .@PeteButtigieg closes the debate with a powerful appeal for service.  So glad he makes the case for common ground on common purpose. #DemDebate

Carla Marinucci @cmarinucci: Strong from @PeteButtigieg: Dems are "competing to be president for after the Trump presidency.. we'll be vulnerable, even more torn apart by politics then we are now...I'm running to be the president who can turn the page & unify a dangerously polarized country." #DemDebate

Chris Cillizza @cillizzaCNN: Buttigieg is dominating the debate. Best performance I've seen with possible exception of Kamala Harris in 1st deb

Ben LaBolt @BenLaBolt: Really strong night for @PeteButtigieg. We knew he was really smart and articulate, but tonight he showed he could engage in a strong and compelling way.

Van Jones @VanJones68: Mayor @PeteButtigieg is showing that he has another gear tonight. #PistolPete

Alex Castellanos @AlexCast: damn. @PeteButtigieg is good. sincere. authentic. good. #DemDebate

Mo Elleithee @MoElleithee: .@PeteButtigieg is having a very, very good night. He has driven this debate more than any other candidate so far.

Tara Setmayer @TaraSetmayer: One of the best lines of the night.@PeteButtigieg had the best debate performance of his campaign.#DemDebate

Kurt Bardella @kurtbardella: It's not even close, @PeteButtigieg is the winner of tonight's #DemDebate. Frankly, you'd think he was the front-runner the way he dictated the debate. There is no doubt in my mind that in a one-on-one debate with @realDonaldTrump ... Pete would annihilate him

Noah Rothman @NoahCRothman: Buttigieg has had the strongest night. Everything else is debatable.

Howard Fineman @HowardFineman: Big night for @Nationals and @PeteButtigieg. Nats hammered Cards, Pete hammered everybody. The debate I want to see is between him and @ewarren. That would be a serious intellectual, linguistic and political throwdown.

Christopher J. Hale @ChrisJollyHale: Y’all, @PeteButtigieg is speaking some truth. We need progressives who get things done. Virtue signaling isn’t enough.

Mark Lukasiewicz @DeanLuk: I’ve said it before: @PeteButtigieg is astonishingly articulate off-the-cuff. Most ideas conveyed with fewest well-chosen words. Reminds us all #wordsmatter #DemDebate #DemocraticDebate

Brian Fallon @brianefallon: Pete was the first candidate to offer a concrete proposal to structurally reform the Court. He has been a leader in promoting this conversation while too many others have ducked it. #DemDebate

S.E. Cupp @secupp: Strongest performances of the night: @PeteButtigieg, @amyklobuchar, and @ewareen, in that they made compelling arguments distinguishing themselves from their opponents. That should actually be the point of these things in a primary, right? #DemDebate

Judy Carr @jschaffercarr: @PeteButtigieg is the only candidate making this election about the American people and not the current occupant of the White House.  #nhpolitics #fitn #demsdebate

Sally Kohn @sallykohn: “We have a crisis of belonging in this country.” — great closing theme from @PeteButtigieg

Zac Petkanas @Zac_Petkanas: Mayor Pete is strongest when he's talking about structural reforms to our democracy.

Lauren Duca @laurenduca: .@PeteButtigieg talking about court reform like this is so exciting. Even just offering up the *idea* of a 15-member court. This is key: SCOTUS is not a vacuum-sealed institution. It is an arm of our government that can be changed by public mandate.

Adrienne Elrod @AdrienneElrod: .@PeteButtigieg and @amyklobuchar are doing a phenomenal job in their own compelling way articulating pragmatism tonight.

Marielena Hincapié @MarielenaNILC: @PeteButtigieg TY for finally raising #Immigration and the broad vision that’s needed for the country when we defeat #Trump #DemDebate

Alan Berkson @berkson0: "In the mid-west, where I live, normal didn't work" - @PeteButtigieg The most important thing said tonight. Trump is a symptom, not the cause. We have deep, complex problems. They are hard to solve. They take commitment and stamina. Who on stage can start that?  #DemDebate

David Bach @DBachGlobal: Appreciate how @PeteButtigieg keeps coming back to how and why Trump got elected, and how he connects his diagnosis of Trump’s success to his policy proposals.

Chris Johnson @chrisjohnson82: "For every argument that I've witnessed like this I could pay for college for everybody," says Buttigieg, before knocking Biden and accusing Warren of "infinite partisan combat." Can really see Pete standing out in this debate, both by rising above the fray and engaging in it.

Alexander Kaufman @AlexCKaufman: Pete Buttigieg was the first candidate on stage tonight to mention climate change, listing it as an issue that doesn't take a "vacation" while the president faces impeachment.

Kurt Bardella @KurtBardella: very effective response from @PeteButtigieg ... he's right, we need to be realistic about healthcare and the idea that we'll be in a place to completely overhaul our entire system without a realistic pay-for post-Trump sounds like fantasy vs reality. #DemDebate

Alexis Wiley @AlexisWileyNews: With Mayor @PeteButtigieg all day on this. We need to give people who don’t have insurance or don’t like their health insurance an affordable option. Not force people who like their coverage to give it up!

What They’re Saying: Julián Castro Gets Biggest Applause of the Night

Secretary Julián Castro recites names of black lives lost at the hands of police-involved shootings

COLUMBUS, OH (October 15, 2019) – In the sixth Democratic debate, the biggest applause of the evening went to former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro during a conversation about gun violence in America. Secretary Castro reminded the other candidates and viewers that “police violence is gun violence” and that communities of color are skeptical of greater policing. The American people saw a bold, new generational leader ready to unite our nation around a positive vision for the future.

Though Secretary Castro's speaking time on the debate stage amounted to less than half of Senator Warren's, his impact was felt on behalf of vulnerable communities. One of several memorable lines on stage at the debate, Secretary Castro said, "Think about how absurd it is that this President is caging kids on the border and effectively letting ISIS prisoners run free."

Following the debate, in a tweet and in spin room interviews, Secretary Castro also addressed housing, immigration, and climate change, which were excluded from tonight’s debate.

    WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

    Activist DeRay Mckesson

“Julian Castro has the most legit plan re: ending police violence. It is research-based and would actually change the outcomes, not merely change the conversation.”

    Kamala Harris for the People

Debate Four Reviews Are In: Kamala Delivered Another Commanding Performance

“Best night,” “Speaks truth to power”, “On Fire” and “Presidential”

In the fourth Democratic debate, Senator Kamala Harris once again delivered a commanding performance, and took the fight directly to Donald Trump by reminding Democratic voters that justice is on the ballot in this election – from economic justice to health care justice to tax justice and more.

Reporters, pundits, activists, and elected officials agree that Kamala Harris owned the stage and delivered an incredibly strong debate performance.

Read some of the early reviews below:

    • Valerie Jarrett, former senior Obama advisor: Thank goodness at the Democratic Presidential Debate @KamalaHarris raised the importance of protecting a woman’s right to chose which is under threat.  Democratic need to unify behind the protection of women’s rights!
    • Nicolle Wallace, MSNBC Host: "I love love love that she refuses to lower the bar for Donald Trump...I think all those points right there are spot on."
    • Karine Jean-Pierre, NBC and MSNBC political analyst: “She had a very strong night...I think Harris had a really strong night tonight. I think what we saw from her is, you know we saw from her during the Kavanaugh hearings and the Judiciary Committee. and you almost saw that Kamala Harris on stage.”
    • Dave Weigel, Washington Post Reporter-”Rank and file Dems are a little exhausted by the M4A debate -- Harris probably had the most effective response, the "seriously this again and not abortion access?" stuff”
    • Planned Parenthood Action-”@KamalaHarris speaks truth to power about reproductive health and rights — and about abortion bans that have been decimating care across the country. “It’s not an exaggeration to say that women will die, poor women, women of color will die.” #AskAboutAbortion #DemDebate”
    • Sarah Silverman, Comedian-”Thank you @KamalaHarris how are we not talking more about women’s motherfucking autonomy  #DemDebate”
    • Patrica Cohen, NY Times- “Harris is framing the abortion issue as fundamental issue of justice.”
    • Wajahat Ali, NY Times Op-ed Writer- “I agree with Kamala Harris that Trump's twitter account should be shut down. Based on Twitter's own terms and conditions, the man has violated it them for years.”
    • Zerlina Maxwell, MSNBC contributor: Kamala had a great debate as well and spoke for many of us who are terrified by the president’s use of twitter to spread hate and incite violence. If you’re a person targeted by this rhetoric it’s not a side issue for you!
    • Samantha Bee, comedian-”Kamala Harris for sure says herstory instead of history and we’re her for it. #DemDebate”

    • Stephen Sperry, President of the Oconee County Democrats:"I would say that this was [Kamala Harris'] strongest debate. I felt she was very comfortable in her positions and how she presented herself tonight. She was very thoughtful... She had a very strong position on women's rights and dealing with it from a health angle was I thought a very smart way of going tonight. I thought that made her stand out."
    • Glenna Broughton, a teacher from Summerville: "[Kamala Harris] is doing an amazing job tonight. She's speaking to people young and old. I support her because, as an educator, every time I've seen her -- I've seen her in small town South Carolina and the South Carolina Democratic Convention -- she speaks to what the average run-of-the-mill person wants. She wants education to be a priority, she wants us to be able to afford to educate our children, and be able to care for our parents in their old age."
    • CA Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins: “Kamala Harris was presidential on that stage tonight. It is truly outrageous that womens’ rights haven’t been at the forefront of this primary, and I’m eternally grateful to Kamala for forcing people to pay attention. She has always been an advocate for the vulnerable and voiceless, and tonight was no different. She gave women, middle class families, and everyone who has been victimized by this presidency and big corporations, a seat at the table.
    • LaNiece Jones, Leader of Black Women Organized for Political Action: “Kamala was on fire tonight. As an Oaklander, I was proud to see her stand up for abortion rights for women who do not have access to reproductive care in other states. We’ll continue to organize for Kamala, because she is the best candidate to take on and beat Trump.”
    • CA Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo: “Kamala’s performance tonight was commanding, sharp, and powerful. She made it clear that as President, she will not back down from the most challenging issues we face. Kamala is going to fight for universal healthcare, gun safety, reproductive freedom, and economic justice, and there is no leader I trust more to secure all that she pursues.”
    • Devon Reese, city councilman, Reno: “Senator Harris connected in tonight’s debate in a powerful way — she spoke to restoring hope in our American institutions and to improving the quality of life for all Americans. She was incredibly strong and decisive.”
    • Paprika Pink: Kamala hasn't had a lot of time to talk, but at this debate party every time she speaks the room falls silent and all eyes turn to the screen. And then there's applause. #DemDebate
    • The Honorable Jackie Weatherspoon, Co-Chair of the NHDP African American Caucus: “I agree with Kamala: justice is absolutely on the ballot in this election. Kamala’s record of taking on big fights and winning is exactly what we need in this moment. She has shown her ability to take Trump and his associates who think the law doesn’t apply to them to task, and I know Kamala will expertly prosecute the case against four more years of this horrible president.”
    • State Representative Patty Cornel, Vice Chair of the Manchester Democrats: “Tonight’s debate made clear yet again that Kamala is absolutely the best candidate to beat Trump. She not only has always fought for what’s right, but she’s always taken on battles on behalf of the people. This experience shows she’s uniquely positioned to shine a light on Trump’s unpatriotic misdeeds and take him to task for his abuse of power.”
    • State Representative Joelle Martin: “Kamala’s strength was palpable tonight. She clearly explained how she is going to move the country forward through her clear-eyed and realistic proposals. She’s not all talk -- she has a record to back it up. For her entire career, Kamala has fought and won on behalf of the people in need, and I know she will do the same as president.”
    • Dartmouth student leader Kos Twum: “Kamala has always been an extremely strong advocate for women, and tonight was no exception. She brought up issues that others wouldn’t, and discussed her strong record and plans to fight for women. That is the leadership we need.”
    • Political activist Dean Barker: “No matter what the topic on that crowded debate stage, Kamala Harris cut through the clutter and demonstrated the leadership and strength needed to take on Mr. Trump. She confirmed for me tonight that she would be our strongest nominee for the general election.”

Klobuchar Campaign Raises $1.1 Million In 24hrs After Ohio Debate

Online Donations Surge Following Commanding Debate Performance

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Following “her strongest performance yet” at the Democratic presidential debate in Ohio, the Amy for America campaign has surged in grassroots fundraising and online support. Today was the campaign’s best day of online fundraising, surpassing even the announcement in February, and tonight the campaign reached $1.1 million in contributions in 24 hours since the debate. The campaign also collected more supporter signups today than on any other day during the campaign.

“In last night’s debate, Amy Klobuchar took the fight to Donald Trump and outlined a clear optimistic agenda,” said Amy For America Campaign Manager Justin Buoen. “Clearly her message is resonating with Americans who are fed up with the noise and nonsense coming out of Washington. In the 24 hours following the debate, the campaign raised $1.1 million and saw a massive spike in organic signups to join our team heading into a critical stretch of this primary. We look forward to building on this momentum as we continue to make investments in our early state infrastructure and work to build a grassroots operation that can win big in 2020.”

ICYMI: Klobuchar A Winner in 4th Democratic Debate

WESTERVILLE, OH  — Senator Amy Klobuchar has received praise across the board for “her strongest performance yet” at the fourth Democratic presidential debate in Ohio. Numerous outlets declared Senator Klobuchar a winner of the debate — she locked in the third most speaking time of all twelve candidates on stage, “came the most prepared and had the strongest performance” and “made the kind of positive case for pragmatism that’s been in short supply this primary.”

    See what others are saying:

    The Week:
[IMAGE: SURPRISE VICTORY Klobuchar praised for debate performance in CNN focus group of Iowa voters]

The Washington Post: WINNERS: Amy Klobuchar: The Minnesota senator arguably made herself Warren’s chief foil in this debate, creating contrasts on taxes, Medicare-for-all and other issues. At one point, she rejected the charge that she was creating a Republican talking point by pressing Warren on whether her Medicare-for-all proposal would raise taxes on the middle class. “You are making Republican talking points right here in this room” by talking about getting rid of private insurance, Klobuchar charged. And she wasn’t wrong. At another point, she hit back at Warren by saying, “Just because you have different ideas doesn’t mean you’re [not] fighting for regular people.”

USA Today: Winners - Amy Klobuchar - “Sen. Amy Klobuchar came out punching. The Minnesota Democrat wasn’t afraid to criticize other candidates, in particular, Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Klobuchar, who has struggled to get a word in during past debates, went out of her way to differentiate her more moderate policies from the more progressive stances. Although she’s done the same in past debates, she has never been this forceful. One of Klobuchar’s biggest moments was calling Warren out on how she will pay for a Medicare for All plan, adding that she believes Warren is handing Republicans a gift by offering up a plan they can attack as too expensive.”

    CNN: Winners: Amy Klobuchar

Boston Globe: “She gave strong answers that highlighted why she is running and why she is unique — the voice of the practical person from, as she said, “flyover country.” And Klobuchar was able, from the very beginning, to get other candidates to engage with her. She had a good performance, she did exactly what she needed to do in the context of the campaign.”

Politico: “Klobuchar saw an opening in the moderate lane and went for it. Invoking her Midwest upbringing, the dignity of work and a moderate approach to health care, she sounded more like Biden than Biden did. She contrasted herself from Warren forcefully.”

Twin Cities Pioneer Press: “Klobuchar definitely got some fresh exposure during the three-hour contest. She logged the third-most speaking time of the candidates, just behind front-runners Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren”

Politico: “Klobuchar came out with a looseness and passion we haven’t yet seen from her — or really any moderate Democrat during the debates, save for Buttigieg. She made the kind of positive case for pragmatism that’s been in short supply this primary, while showing she’s not afraid to challenge the soaring ambitions of Warren and Sanders on both politics and policy.”

The Week: “It was Klobuchar who made the clearest and most consistent case for moderation — and usually did so in response to Warren's ambitious policy proposals.”

The Hill: “On Tuesday night she left a mark”

Star Tribune: 'A good night': What people are saying about Amy Klobuchar's debate performance

The New York Times: Amy Klobuchar Goes After Elizabeth Warren in Debate

    From Twitter:

“@amyklobuchar performance tonight will resonate with moderate Democrats who are tired of being told that they are sellouts if they don’t subscribe to most left views. It’s a theme that’s cut across all her answers tonight & why she is having a good night.” — Jennifer Palmieri, former spokeswoman for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama

“And @amyklobuchar is having a really good night as well… With 11 other people on stage, you don’t get a lot of opportunities to make an impression. But she’s finding them, using each one to stand out and draw a contrast.” — Mo Elleithee

“What Klobuchar is saying here, about her performance in very conservative parts of MN, is true. She really does outperform in some very very red places in her state.” — Chris Hayes

“Amy! @amyklobuchar is crushing it tonight.” — Jennifer Palmieri

“Amy Klobuchar: "No one on this stage wants to protect billionaires. Not even the billionaire wants to protect billionaires." Fine line.” — Robert Reich

“Klobuchar also rocked it” — Neera Tanden

“Good line from Klobuchar: “It doesn’t make America great again, it makes Russia great again.” — Katie Rosman

“Senator Klobuchar slams Trump for his decision to leave U.S. allies to be "slaughtered" #DemDebate” — The Daily Beast

“Exactly @AmyKlobuchar! Trump talks as a populist, but governs for himself. #AFTvotes #DemDebate” — Randi Weingarten

“Thank you to Amy Klobuchar for moving to health care conversations we HAVEN'T had yet.” — Christina Reynolds

“.@amyklobuchar says 'I think we owe it to the people to say how we're going to pay for health care'... I'll say it again I really like Amy Klobuchar. No nonsense. #DemocraticDebate” - Maria Shriver

“This is the night he won New Hampshire in 2000. And I will say goodnight and leave you all with that. People remember him and love him for bringing America together not dividing it apart. Thank you for the beautiful closing answer Senator Klobuchar. #DemDebates4 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸”— Meghan McCain

Beto is Leading the Conversation, Not Following the Polls

WESTERVILLE, Ohio—On policies related to gun violence, opioids, apprenticeships, disabilities, veterans’ health care, and data privacy—Beto showed tonight that he is not following the polls; he is leading the conversation forward.

Beto decisively won the exchange on guns, directly confronting Mayor Buttigieg for following the advice of pollsters and consultants and calling the bold Peace Plan put forward by March For Our Lives advocates a “shiny object”—a “slap in the face” to their efforts.

Voters are sick of soundbites and talking points. They’re sick of pundits and pollsters trying to advance their own agenda. They’re sick of both parties trying to score points instead of fixing problems. They want a leader who isn’t afraid to tell the truth about the issues facing Americans today.

On Thursday, Beto is confronting Trump head on in Dallas, meeting his message of hate with a Rally Against Fear.

Steyer Lays Out Positive Vision for America in Debut Debate Performance

In first debate appearance, Tom Steyer laid out his vision to take back our American democracy and make it of, by, and for the people again

(WESTERVILLE, OH, October 15, 2019) — Tonight, presidential candidate for the Democratic nomination Tom Steyer made his debut appearance on the debate stage, and laid out his positive vision to repair our broken government and return the power of our democracy back to the American people. Steyer proved why he’s surging in early state polling, and why his vision of taking back control of the American democracy from corporations and returning it to the people is resonating all across the country. While there was not a single question on the climate crisis, Steyer also used his time to bring attention to the emergency facing our planet.

“There's something wrong here. Corporations have bought our government. Our government has failed. That's why I'm running for president. Because we're not going to get any of the policies that everybody on this stage wants — health care, education, Green New Deal, or a living wage — unless we break the power of the corporations,” Steyer said on stage.

Steyer showed that he is the leading candidate to fight climate change, stating: “Let's address the most important international problem that we're facing, which no one has brought up, which is climate. We can't solve the climate crisis in the United States by ourselves. It's an international crisis.”

Steyer also stated that he is the best one to take on President Trump over the economy: “In fact, if we want to beat Mr. Trump, I think somebody who can go toe to toe with him and show him to be a fraud and a failure as a business person, and a fraud and a failure as a steward of the American economy is going to be necessary. His tax plan is a failure. His trade war is a failure. I would love to take him on as a real businessman and show that, in fact, he's failed the American people, and he has to go.”

Steyer is one of only seven candidates who has qualified for the next DNC debate in Atlanta, scheduled for November 20th.

    YANG2020 DAILY UPDATE

    WEDNESDAY, OCT. 16, 2019

    • Andrew Yang drove the conversation about the U.S. economy and universal basic income on the debate stage
    • Yang announced the unprecedented #AskAndrew 10-hour Marathon Q&A set for this Friday
    • Yang stood out as a leader in the crowded field, defining the dialogue around UBI and championing proposals for a value-added tax, unique big tech regulations, and the decriminalization of opioids
NEW YORK  — Last night on the debate stage, Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang won by discussing his positive vision for the economic future of America. The debate moderators brought the conversation about universal basic income to the stage, marking a huge success for Yang's flagship proposal, the Freedom Dividend.  As the candidate most laser-focused on delivering solutions to solve the problems that got Donald Trump elected, Andrew Yang has shown once again that he is changing the conversation to topics that most directly affect the 21st century American.

“Whenever we talk about Trump, we lose,” Yang said. “We need to present a new vision.”

Yang ended the debate with an unprecedented commitment and call-to-action:

“If you don’t feel like you got your question answered tonight, it’s understandable. There are 12 of us. I’m going to be answering voter questions for 10 straight hours this Friday,” Yang said.

On Friday, Americans will have the opportunity to see and hear Yang answer questions directly from the American people during the #AskAndrew 10-Hour Marathon Q&A - Unmoderated and Honest.

During the first 20 minutes post-debate, more than 2,000 Americans submitted questions to the Yang2020 website for the Friday Q&A.

The event will be live streamed on multiple channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and YouTube.

Despite being given fewer than 10 minutes of speaking time on the debate stage, Andrew's ideas dominated the night. When he has 10 hours to explain his policies to the American people on Friday, he'll continue to drive home why he's the best Democratic candidate to beat Donald Trump.

    What They're Saying

    • "...some of his top issues — automation and universal basic income — got a real debate. Candidates shared his concerns about the impact of automation on jobs, to some degree, and some on the stage, including Castro and Gabbard, were even open to his idea to give every American $1,000 per month." - The Washington Post
    • "It's a testament to Yang's remarkable rise in this race -- second only to Buttigieg's -- and to the fact that he is already having a significant impact on the conversation within the Democratic Party." - CNN's Chris Cillizza
    • "If Andrew Yang decided to run for president in order to promote universal basic income — the idea that the government should dispense a guaranteed, regular stipend to every single citizen — then he’s already won." - Vox
    • "For a candidate who was once seen as a longer-than-long shot for the Democratic nomination, former tech executive Andrew Yang scored a handful of wins on Tuesday night." - The Hill

ICYMI: Andrew Yang's October Debate Onstage Highlights

    • “The fact is that most Americans do not want to work for the federal government,” said Yang when asked about Sanders’ federal jobs guarantee. Yang pointed out that federal job retraining has been ineffective and that Sanders’ plan “doesn’t take into account people like my wife who’s at home with our two boys, one of whom is autistic” while his Freedom Dividend “actually recognizes the work that is happening in our families and our communities” right now.

    • When asked why he didn’t support Senator Warren’s wealth tax, Yang drew attention to the fact that Germany, France, Denmark, and Sweden all implemented a wealth tax, only to repeal it shortly after because “it had massive implementation problems, and did not generate the revenue they projected.” “We should not be looking to other countries’ mistakes,” warned Yang, who went on to explain how a value-added tax would “give the American people a tiny slice of every Amazon sale, every Google search, every robot truck mile, every Facebook ad” and return economic power to the hands of hard-working Americans.

    • Yang drove the conversation on the opioid epidemic. He diagnosed the opioid crisis as “the disease of capitalism run amok,” illustrating how even though at one point “there were more opiate prescriptions in the state of Ohio than human beings… the government turned a blind eye to this company spreading a plague among its people.” “We need to decriminalize opioids for personal use,” Yang said. “We have to let the country know this is not a personal failing, this was a systemic government failing.”

    • Finally, Yang broke through the noise about big tech companies, addressing two major points: the changing role of technology in society and using anti-trust actions to address these changes. Regarding technology's effect on society, Yang warned, “I’m particularly concerned about screen use and its effects on our children. Studies clearly show that we’re seeing record levels of anxiety and depression, coincident with smartphone adoption and social media use.” To solve these crucial issues, Yang implored that “using a 20th century antitrust framework will not work,” and that we as a nation must “use 21st century solutions for 21st century problems.”

YANG’S FREEDOM DIVIDEND DEFINES DEMOCRATIC DEBATE CONVERSATION ON ECONOMY

    • Andrew Yang is the only candidate who has been consistently discussing the economic reality experienced by most Americans.
    • Yang spent 7 years working in struggling communities through his non-profit, Venture for America, where he saw the economic anxiety experienced by communities across the country.
    • The Freedom Dividend is the only proposal to give Americans the economic security and freedom they need to pursue the work they want to.
    • Nearly every other candidate entered tonight’s debate on the economy with endorsements of the proposal or likening their own plans to Yang’s -- placing him and his signature policy at the center of the new economic debate.
WESTERVILLE, OH — On the Ohio debate stage, Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang underscored the impact of his proposed Freedom Dividend and why it’s a better solution to the problems Americans are facing during our current period of economic change and uncertainty that Andrew and experts call the “Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

After Andrew contrasted his stance with Senator Sanders, other candidates finally acknowledged the issues Yang has been talking about throughout the election. Warren and Booker likened their own proposals to Andrew's stance on UBI and gave supportive comments, while Tulsi Gabbard endorsed the concept wholeheartedly and Julian Castro called for a pilot program.

Andrew’s entire campaign has been propelled by the experiences he witnessed in struggling communities across the country. He spent 7 years helping local entrepreneurs create jobs in these communities through the non-profit he founded, Venture for America. While proud of the work he did through VFA, he realized over time that he was pouring water into a bathtub with a giant hole ripped in the bottom. Automation was displacing millions of workers in manufacturing and it will soon displace millions more in truck driving, food service and prep, call centers, and on and on through the economy. Tonight’s debate finally saw the other Democratic candidates address this reality.

This debate made one thing clear: Andrew’s vision for America’s future and his solutions to tackle the problems just over the horizon are driving the economic debate in the Democratic party.

“When we put the money into our hands, we can build a trickle-up economy from our people, our families, and our communities up,” Yang said. “It will enable us to do the kind of work that we want to do. This is the kind of positive vision in response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution that we have to embrace as a party.”

RNC Statement on the Democrat Debate

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released the following statement in response to tonight’s Democrat primary debate:

"Tonight, 2020 Democrats doubled down on their radical, socialist ideas that would bring our great American comeback to a halt," said Chairwoman McDaniel. "Their proposals would destroy millions of jobs, kick hundreds of millions off of their health care plans, increase government control over nearly every aspect of their lives – and it would all come at an astronomical cost to taxpayers. This isn’t the direction that Americans want for our country and is precisely why we must re-elect Donald Trump and ‘Keep America Great.'"

Trump campaign statement on October Democrat Debate

“A dozen Democrats stood on stage tonight and made several things clear. They have always wanted to impeach President Trump, they have always wanted to eliminate employer-provided health insurance, they have always wanted to raise your taxes, and they have always wanted to unravel the hottest economy in modern history. Another thing was also clear: Once again, President Trump was the hands-down winner of this debate.”

Partnership Statement On Tonight’s Fourth Presidential Debate

WASHINGTON – The Partnership for America’s Health Care Future issued the following statement regarding tonight’s presidential debate:

“Tonight’s debate once again reminded Americans of the unaffordable costs and substantial risks associated with new government-controlled health insurance systems like Medicare for all, the public option and Medicare buy-in,” said Lauren Crawford Shaver, executive director of the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future.  “While some candidates continued to avoid explaining how working Americans would foot the bill for these new one-size-fits-all systems, experts have consistently warned that middle class families’ pocketbooks would be hit hard.  Not only would Americans be forced to pay more, but they would also have to wait longer for worse care.  And when it comes to so-called ‘moderate’ fallbacks like buy-in and the public option, these new systems would result in higher costs and fewer choices as families are forced into the same one-size-fits-all system run by politicians.  Today, roughly 90 percent of Americans are covered and a majority of Americans are satisfied with their current health care.  Instead of scrapping the progress we’ve made, our leaders should focus on building upon what’s working and fixing what isn’t.”

LCV STATEMENT ON THE FOURTH DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY DEBATE

Washington, D.C. — In response to the fourth Democratic primary debate, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld:

“WTF CNN and The New York Times?

“Tonight’s debate was a punch in the gut to voters across the country who care deeply about the climate crisis. The latest reputable presidential primary poll found that almost 80 percent of Democratic primary voters say that a candidate’s position on climate change is very important to them, yet there wasn’t a single climate question during the fourth Democratic primary debate. Despite this glaring omission, many candidates still found a way to inject climate into the discussion.

“Climate is a top priority for voters, it’s a top priority for candidates, and it’s most definitely a top priority for LCV and our members across the country. And with devastating impacts of the climate crisis upon us, this failure by CNN, The New York Times and tonight’s debate moderators is all the more appalling. The dire circumstances demand more from the networks and people shaping the most-watched events of the Democratic primary.”

    Campaign to Fix the Debt

    For Immediate Release

    Debt Denial Continues at Debates

With 374 questions asked during four presidential debates, there has still not been a single one posed about the national debt or the looming insolvency of our entitlement programs.

The following is a statement from the nonpartisan Campaign to Fix the Debt Co-Chairs Judd Gregg and Edward Rendell:

The next president will inherit a daunting national debt, yet during nearly 14 hours of debate, there has been no acknowledgment of reality or question about the projected worst fiscal situation in our history.

Debt is the largest share of the economy in history other than just after World War II, and we’re adding more than a trillion dollars every year forever.

Some of our largest trust funds are also running out of reserves – Social Security will be insolvent when today’s youngest retirees are still in their 70s.

With many candidates proposing big ideas but too few talking about how to pay for them and none talking about how to fix the underlying fiscal situation, this is the one issue that could act as a wet blanket over their entire agenda.

None of this is sustainable, and we need a plan for the debt from all presidential candidates.

We owe the next generation a question about the debt.

FFRF's Ron Reagan ad captures the web during CNN debate

The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “unabashed atheist” commercial with Ron Reagan ruled the internet during the Democratic debate on CNN Tuesday night.

The 30-second spot (the first freethinking ad believed to have ever run during a presidential primary debate) aired twice during the Oct. 15 debate itself, and also during the primary debate pre-show and post-show. The name of Ron Reagan, the progressive son of President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan, was the most searched term on Google in the course of the debate, as Google itself acknowledged. His name was among the top 20 trenders on Twitter.

    Reagan says in the ad:

Hi, I'm Ron Reagan, an unabashed atheist, and I'm alarmed by the intrusion of religion into our secular government. That's why I'm asking you to support the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the nation's largest and most effective association of atheists and agnostics, working to keep state and church separate, just like our Founding Fathers intended. Please support the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Ron Reagan, lifelong atheist, not afraid of burning in hell.

The ad got a lot of approving nods. Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman tweeted: “That Ron Reagan atheism psa to sep church and state is mmuah. So good.” Twitter denizen Emo Luments tweeted during the event: “The best part of the debate so far. #ronreagan @FFRF” There were a few dissenting voices. Omarosa Manigault Newman, President Trump’s former acolyte on “Apprentice” and in the White House, expressed her disapproval.

Not surprisingly, the ad received a lot of media coverage, albeit sometimes grudgingly.

“Ron Reagan crashed the Democratic presidential primary debate Tuesday night with a plug for an atheist group that turned his name into the top trending search on Google — as he declared that he was ‘not afraid of burning in hell,’” reported the right-leaning New York Post. And Fox News stated, “Ron Reagan was not on stage Tuesday night for the Democratic presidential primary debate, but his provocative plug for a prominent atheist group earned him the top spot on Google after he declared himself a ‘lifelong atheist, not afraid of burning in hell.’”
The ad is airing again today, Oct. 16, on “The Lead with Jake Tapper” (4-5 p.m. Eastern), “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” (5-7 p.m.) and “Anderson Cooper 360” (8-9 p.m.). CBS, NBC, ABC and Discovery Science networks have refused the ad since 2014, but it has previously run periodically on CNN, Comedy Central and Rachel Maddow’s show on MSNBC.
FFRF Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor is delighted about the effect of the ad.
“It just shows how much of an impact a freethought perspective can have, if it’s given a chance,” Gaylor says. “People are hankering for an uncensored freethinking point of view, and it’s to CNN’s credit that it allowed this.”
As a tweet proclaimed during the debate: “Can we all at least agree that #RonReagan won the night?”
FFRF thanks FFRF members who have donated to FFRF’s Advertising Fund for making possible this major campaign and invites fans of the ad to join FFRF in our work to educate the public.
