"Incredibly, today in many states, it is still legal to fire someone for being gay. That is unacceptable and must change."

Bernie has spent a lifetime fighting for LBGTQ equality

Throughout his decades of public service, Bernie has voted against measures that impede the LGBTQ community's rights and has supported those that protect them from discrimination.

1983 - Signed the first Proclamation for creating the first Gay and Lesbian Pride Day in Burlington.

1985 - Burlington passes proclamation protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination in housing and employment.

1993 - When Congress members attacked non-discrimination in DC, Sanders voted no.

1993 - Voted against "don't ask, don't tell".

1995 - Sanders rebuked Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham for using the word "Homos" when talking about gays serving in the military.

1996 - Voted against the Defense of Marriage Act.

1998 - When congress tried to keep domestic partners from adopting children in DC, Sanders said "no".

2001 - When congress tried to keep domestic partners from receiving health benefits, Sanders said "no".

2004 - Voted against the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

2007 - Voted to expand and strengthen penalties for violent crimes committed on the basis of sexual orientation.

2009 - Voted to expand federal hate crimes to cover offenses motivated by gender identity or sexual orientation.

2010 - Voted to over turn "don't ask, don't tell".

2013 - Co-Sponsored the Uniting American Families Act.

2013 - Co-Sponsored The Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

2014 - Co-Sponsored the International Human Rights Defense Act.

2015 - Co-Sponsored Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity protected categories.

2016 - Co-Sponsored bill to designate June 26, 2016, as LGBTQ Equality Day.

Bernie believes it should not be a radical idea to guarantee everyone - regardless of sexuality or gender identity - equal protection under the law and that we must end discrimination in all forms. As President, he will:

- Pass the Equality Act, which would expand the defined prohibited types of discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

- Pass the Every Child Deserves a Family Act and other bills to prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ+ people.

- Strongly oppose any legislation that falsely purports to "protect" religious liberty at the expense of others' rights.

- Ensure LGBTQ+ people have comprehensive health care without discrimination or discrimination from providers.

ed. note: The basic design of this piece is the same as the Bernie 2016 LGBTQ piece.  There are a number of differences, however, including: a different photo and quote and addition of the logo on the front; a different photo on the inside and added points from 2014, 2015 and 2016; and text on the back outlining policy objectives.  The logo on the 2020 brochure is now fully filled in with rainbow colors, whereas for 2016 "Bernie" was in white and just the stripes underneath were in color.
