From the South Side to the State House.
Born on the South Side of Chicago, Deval Patrick Lived in his grandparents' two-bedroom tenement, much of that time on welfare. Through the love and support of family, great teachers, and adults in the neighborhood, he became the first in his family to attend college and law school.

Deval Patrick went on to serve as a civil rights lawyer with the NAACP, lead the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and hold senior roles in the private sector.

In 2006, he became Massachusetts' first black Governor. By the end of his second term, Massachusetts ranked first in the nation in energy efficiency, first in health care coverage, and first in student achievement. Massachusetts grew to a 25-year employment high and became a global center for innovation and advanced manufacturing.

Since leaving office, he has been a leader in the field of impact investing, helping businesses that produce social goods gain access to capital and management expertise.

Renewing the American Dream – Opportunity, Reform, Democracy, and Leadership Agendas

An Opportunity Agenda: Grow the economy out to working people and the marginalized, not just up to the well connected. In a global economy where knowledge is power, that means investing time, ideas and money in education, innovation and infrastructure.

A Reform Agenda: Make meaningful fixes to the big systems that consistently fail to meet modern needs: a health care system that provides access to high-quality, low-cost health services everywhere and for every single individual: an immigration system that provides for both border integrity and human dignity, and a justice system that focuses less on warehousing people and more on preparing them to re-enter responsible life.

A Democracy Agenda: Fix the hyper-partisan gerrymandering where politicians pick their voters rather than the other way around. End the voter suppression and other gamesmanship used to make it harder for your vote to count. Stop the explosion of dark money into elections, and limit the influence of paid lobbyists. We must root these out and return power to where it belongs: with the people.

A Leadership Agenda: Restore America's standing in the world. Demonstrate that the values we govern by at home define our policies overseas. Renew our moral leadership on the world stage, and influence other countries through the clarity of our convictions – not bullying.
