Criminal Justice Reform

Our criminal justice system doesn't offer equal justice to every American — especially Black, brown, and low-income Americans. lt is past time to transform the criminal legal system to one that works for the security of every community. Pete's plan will reduce mass incarceration and racism in the system, while keeping communities safer. As President, he will:

•     Reduce the number of people incarcerated in the US by 50% through reforms that include ending mandatory mínimum sentencing, eliminating incarceration for drug possession, legalizing marijuana, and incentivizing states to decarcerate.

•     lnvest $100M in closing youth prisons and reducing youth incarceration.

•     Abolish all federal private prisons.

•     Provide equal resources to federal defenders and federal prosecutors and ensure pay parity between them.

•     Ensure that individuals in prison can access medically necessary treatment and educational opportunities, including Pell Grants.

•     lmprove training and require reporting for police officers on issues specific to marginalized communities and victims of domestic violence.

•     Place strict restrictions on when the use of force by police officers is allowed.

•     Ban the death penalty through a constitutional amendment.

•     Ensure that people with convictions have the freedom to access education, jobs, housing, and health care.

We must recognize that our criminal justice system is not fair and is not seen to be a fair one by so many. This must change, and it will.
