CORY BOOKER ON THE ISSUES Cory is the only candidate in this race who goes home to a low-income, majority black and brown inner-city community. He has dedicated his life to fighting for those who have been left out, left behind, or left without a voice. Cory is running for president to reignite our spirit of common purpose to build a more fair and just nation for everyone. HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT No American should be forced to choose between groceries and prescription drugs, between paying their rent and seeing a doctor. No American should go bankrupt because of medical bills. Cory will ensure all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care by fighting for Medicare for All. He will also: expand access to long-term care, expand paid family and medical leave, cut the cost of prescription drugs, and combar the opioid crisis. REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS All people deserve to control their own bodies. Cory will stand with those leading the fight for reproductive rights and will fight to protect the constitutional right to abortion. That starts with nominating judges who are committed to upholding reproductive rights, passing legislation to codify the protections guaranteed by Roe v. Wade, repealing the Hyde Amendment, and ensuring that everyone has access to reproductive health care. ENDING THE GUN VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC Cory has put forward the most sweeping plan to combat gun violence of any candidate for president, ever. His plan starts with creating a federal gun licensing system, because if you need a license to drive a car, you should need a license to buy and possess a gun. He would also work to ban assault weapons and implement universal background checks, as well as clase dangerous loopholes that let dangerous people gain access to firearms. AFFORDABLE, SAFE, ANO INCLUSIVE HOUSING FOR ALL Overwhelming evidence points to the connection between access to safe, affordable housing and achieving better life outcomes. Cory's plan will cap rental costs at 30% of income through a refundable tax credit for renters, increase homeownership by increasing access to down payments and affordable housing, reduce discriminatory barriers to accessing housing, and end homelessness by reducing evictions and expanding funding for homelessness programs. EQUALITY FOR LGBTQ AMERICANS We cannot profess to be a nation of liberty and justice for all when many of our fellow Americans are discriminated against because of who they are or who they love. Despite advances in equality for LGBTQ Americans, including marriage equality, we need to do more to protect LGBTQ Americans from discrimination, starting with passing the EQUALITY Act and rolling back the Trump Administration's attacks on LGBTQ youth, service members, and more. CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM America's criminal justice system is deeply broken – it treats you better, as Bryan Stevenson says, if you're rich and guilty than if you're poor and innocent. In the Senate, Cory helped lead the fight to fix our country's broken criminal justice system with the historic passage of the First Step Act, which decreased mandatory minimums, reformed inhumane prison conditions, and reduced sentencing disparities. He would continue that work in the White House by decriminalizing marijuana, expunging records, and restoring justice to individuals and communities that have been devastated by the War on Drugs. Cory would also initiate a sweeping clemency process for more than 17,000 individuals currently serving excessive sentences for nonviolent drug offenses. ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND CLIMATE CHANGE Cory will take immediate steps to protect and defend all communities – particularly our underserved rural and urban communities – affected by climate change, pollution, and environmental injustice. He will immediately begin reversing the damage this president has done by rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, restoring funding to the Environmental Protection Agency, and holding polluters accountable. But he will not stop there. He will work to implement a Green New Deal that achieves 100 percent of our power demand through clean, renewable, zero-emission energy sources as well as increase penalties for polluters, roll back fossil fuel subsidies, and invest in conservation and a just transition to a clean energy economy. ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL For too long, America's economic agenda has centered on enriching the already-rich. Over the past few years, we have seen massive windfalls for multinational companies, tax breaks for the wealthy, and trade deals that boost corporate profits at the expense of hardworking Americans. In the White House, Cory will fight to close the wealth gap by enacting his "Baby Bonds" proposal to give every American a shot at wealth and economic opportunity and implement the Rise Credit, which would put up to $4,000 in the pockets of every working American and provide economic security for all Americans. VOTING RIGHTS The right to vote has been under assault for millions of Americans, but disproportionately for communities of color and young people. It is time for a new Voting Rights Act to put an end to systematic attempts to limit access to the ballot box and strip citizens of their constitutionally-guaranteed right to vote. Cory will fight to protect and expand every American's right to take part in our democracy by restoring the Voting Rights Act, and implementing automatic voter registration, vote by mail, and passing a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. RESTORING AMERICAN LEADERSHIP IN THE WORLD Instead of a reckless and dangerous approach that risks our national security, America must lead by the example of our values, stand with our allies and partners, restare Congress' role in the authorization of military force, and confront 21st century security challenges like climate change. IMMIGRATION SYSTEM THAT REFLECTS OUR VALUES America has been a beacon of freedom, hope, and opportunity to the world for generations, and our immigration system must reflect these values. Cory won't wait to fix our broken Immigration system. Cory will act – with or without Congress – to immediately end family separation, virtually eliminare immigration detention, close private detention facilities, reform our immigration system so that it is humane, ensure protections for Dreamers and TPS recipients; and fight for a pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. EQUALITY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES It's been nearly 30 years since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, but people with disabilities still face higher rates of poverty, are overrepresented in our criminal justice system, and must overcome other barriers to health care and quality of life. Cory will work to ensure accessibility, equality, and opportunity for all people with disabilities by expanding access to long-term services and supports and home and community based services, and fighting for the Disability Integration Act. COLLEGE AND WORKFORCE TRAINING Today, student loans are the fastest growing segment of US household debt, and too many young people see college as out of reach. As president, Cory will fight for every young person's right to pursue their chosen path – whether that's pursuing higher education without crushing student loan debt, starting a small business, or getting on-the-job skills training through an apprenticeship program or a vocational training school. WORKERS RIGHTS The dignity of work is being stripped away from American workers. People working full time jobs are left with more month at the end of their money than money at the end of their month. It's no coincidence that as union membership rates have gone down, labor wages have gone down as well. As president, Cory will fight to strengthen and expand the right for all workers to have a voice at work and collectively bargain for better wages and working conditions. VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES We call ourselves the home of the brave, but we are not doing nearly enough to support and honor our veterans and military families. Too often they lack access to the health care services and job opportunities they need and deserve. Cory will ensure our veterans and military families receive world class health care – including mental health services – that is accessible and easy to navigate. He will end veteran homelessness and strengthen economic opportunities for veterans, including those seeking to start small businesses by directing the Small Business Administration to invest more in veteran-owned businesses and entrepreneurship. PUBLIC EDUCATION AND TEACHERS Access to a high quality public education should not depend on a child's zip code. Teachers across the country are overworked, underpaid, and under-supported at a time when they are going above and beyond for our students. Cory will invest in teachers by raising pay, forgiving student debt, and providing financial assistance for teacher certification and licensing. He will also guarantee universal early childhood education, fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), and strengthen our public schools by investing in additional resources for schools that need them.
