Iowa City Press-Citizen Endorses Senator Amy Klobuchar for President

“Her track record in Minnesota shows her ability to appeal across urban, rural and progressive, moderate divides.”

DES MOINES, IA —Today, the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s editorial board endorsed Senator Amy Klobuchar for President. The Press-Citizen, which serves Iowa City, Johnson County, and portions of surrounding counties, cited Klobuchar’s history of passing bipartisan legislation and ability to beat Donald Trump as the primary reasons for their endorsement.

Their endorsement comes on the heels of endorsements from the Quad-City Times, the New York Times and three New Hampshire papers: the New Hampshire Union LeaderThe Keene Sentinel, and the Seacoast Media Group.

Iowa City Press Citizen -- Press-Citizen Editorial Board endorses Amy Klobuchar for Iowa Caucus 2020

When Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota showed up in Iowa City in May 2019, she was just another presidential hopeful roaming the streets, but even then, she had the right thesis for Democrats in a post-2016 America:

"I truly believe if you are going to run for president, you should have some ideas. You should have a way to pay for them and a way to get them done," Klobuchar told a packed room at the Mill Restaurant on May 4, 2019.

A key point to Klobuchar's post-Trump America is nothing happens if we cannot get things done. That means flipping Republican seats in Congress, collaborating with Republicans when possible and, importantly, passing legislation. As the board sees it, the country needs change, but that change will only come from a party headed by a president who has the capacity to unify our country. That means avoiding candidates that scare off would-be collaborators.

She can beat Trump in the Midwest, which is key to winning the Electoral College as well as the popular vote.

Her track record in Minnesota shows her ability to appeal across urban, rural and progressive, moderate divides. In her 2006 race against Republican then U.S. Rep Mark Kennedy she won all but eight counties. In 2012, she beat her opponent Kurt Bills by 35 points, outperforming even President Barack Obama's reelection victory. While Republicans had a better year in 2018, she still held strong support in the Twin Cities and its suburbs.

While in Congress, she has shown a consistency in working the system to produce outcomes. From The 2018 Broadband Infrastructure Act to a bill to incent physicians to practice in under-served often rural communities, Klobuchar has moved the needle.

Many have decried Klobuchar as a moderate incrementalist, but she has shown she is willing to make big moves focused on making the process better. While she and the rest of her colleagues in the Senate are finding their work halted by Mitch McConnell, Klobuchar's 100-day plan details how she would use executive orders to get the U.S. back in the International Climate Agreements on day one — taking a step towards reclaiming our leadership on addressing the climate crisis. In addition, she would use executive orders to increase government cybersecurity, close the so-called 'boyfriend loophole' for firearms, end the separation of families at the U.S.-Mexico border and restore requirements for the government to release annual reports on non-war zone strikes and assessments of civilian deaths resulting from those strikes. It should be noted that the balance of power needs to be addressed so change by executive order is last resort action. But so long as important bills end up rotting in McConnell's drawer, we are glad to support a candidate looking at all of her options.

While Klobuchar's proven track record in statewide elections and history of bipartisan legislation makes her a top choice, her campaign has struggled to gain national traction in the way that other candidates have. Her campaign should take note of these candidates' robust media outreach and ability to meet voters where they are to help ensure that her message is getting out to the groups she will need to win. Whatever the precincts report Monday night, Klobuchar will have to up her media game if she's going to be successful moving forward.

For these reasons, the board put itself behind Klobuchar — BUT caucusing for the right presidential nominee should be a small part of our area's participation in politics.

As always, the Press-Citizen Editorial Board nods to the national but wants to emphasize the local. On June 2, 2020 there will be a primary election for congressional, state legislative and county offices. On the November ballot, there will be more than just a president to pick.

If we believe in change, we must of course vote when the president is on the ballot. But that's the minimum. We have to show up and down the ballot especially outside presidential years.

Iowa State Senator Rob Hogg & Iowa State Representatives Chris Hall and Monica Kurth Endorse Amy Klobuchar for President

Senator Klobuchar Now Has the Support of 16 Legislative Endorsers

DES MOINES, IA — Iowa State Senator Rob Hogg, Iowa State Representative Chris Hall, and Iowa State Representative Monica Kurth today endorsed U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar for President, bringing her number of legislative endorsers to 16 -- the most of any candidate in the field.

Senator Hogg, a four-term Senator who represents a large portion of Cedar Rapids, held independent conversations on climate change with 19 presidential candidates throughout 2019. In announcing his endorsement of Amy Klobuchar, Senator Hogg cited her “working family background, extensive experience on farm and rural issues, and strong commitment to civil rights.”

“Like many of our candidates, Senator Klobuchar is a strong leader for climate action,” said Iowa State Senator Rob Hogg. “Her visits to flood-affected Iowans shows that she knows that Americans today are already being hurt by climate-related disasters. I believe her plan for quick action on climate – (1) re-enter the Paris Agreement, (2) restore the Clean Power Plan, (3) reinstate the Clean Car Standards, and (4) submit comprehensive climate legislation to Congress to address climate resilience, green infrastructure, and a price on carbon pollution – is achievable and is guided by climate science. Her plan would also lay the foundation for even more action on climate at home and around the world in the decade of the 2020s.”

Hall, who represents House District 13 in Sioux City, had previously endorsed Former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke. In announcing his endorsement of Klobuchar, Representative Hall cited her “Many Paths to Success” Post-Secondary Education Plan and her knowledge of Iowa’s agriculture and biofuel industries.

“I have chosen to endorse Amy Klobuchar because she best understands the challenges and opportunities that Iowans have in front of them,” said Iowa State Representative Chris Hall. “She recognizes there are many paths to success, and her commitment to increase access to one and two-year community college degrees and technical certifications will be transformative for people in my district and throughout Iowa. She’s extremely familiar with Iowa’s agriculture and biofuel industries, and knows how damaging this administration’s policies have been for us. Iowans deserve a president who will stand up for our farmers, our workers and our students -- and Amy Klobuchar is uniquely qualified for the role.

Kurth, who represents the west-central part of Davenport and is in her second term in the House, had previously endorsed Senator Cory Booker. A retired community college instructor, Kurth cited Klobuchar’s support for community college and technical school education in announcing her endorsement.

“As a former counselor and community college instructor, I’ve seen firsthand the value of a community college education,” said Iowa State Representative Monica Kurth. “Amy understands how important it is to make one and two year degrees and technical certifications an accessible, exciting, and respected option for students, and she has developed the plan to do so. I am proud to endorse her today and look forward to caucusing for her on February 3rd.”

Klobuchar, who has been widely praised for her legislative record in the U.S. Senate, has received endorsements from a large number of local and state elected officials in Iowa. With Hogg, Hall and Kurth’s endorsements, she now has the support of 16 sitting members of the Iowa legislature -- the most of any candidate in the field. Each time she has led the ticket as a Senate candidate in Minnesota, Democrats have flipped the State House of Representatives from Republican to Democratic control.

Quad-City Times: Editorial: Klobuchar is the One
Quad City Times Editorial Board

Amy Klobuchar earned our endorsement.

She won it from an editorial board that, like much of the electorate just two weeks away from the Iowa caucuses, has struggled with how to assess the large field of candidates vying for the Democrats’ 2020 presidential nomination.

How did she do it?

She won our confidence with her three-term record in the U.S. Senate representing the state of Minnesota.

She won our confidence with the way she's campaigned in Iowa for more than a year.

She won our endorsement by convincing us that, among her rivals, in this divided political culture, she is the best person to push through an agenda that will better the lives of millions of Americans, including those of us who live in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

Throughout much of the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, Klobuchar has been dubbed a moderate.

To many, this is a moniker that implies slow incrementalism.

In truth, that label belies Amy Klobuchar's vision and her record.

Only in this campaign could it be considered incrementalist to want to make community college, the engine of progress for so many middle-class Americans, free.

Only in this campaign could somebody with a plan to open the door to health care for millions of Americans through Medicare or Medicaid be dubbed just a moderate.

Only in this campaign could somebody with a plan to curb fossil fuel emissions by 2050 be labeled middle-of-the-road.

In truth, Amy Klobuchar is a progressive realist.

So, what does she offer?

On health care, she offers a plan (not a "pipe dream," as she puts it) to vastly improve coverage with a public option for people priced out of the private insurance market. Her expansion of public health programs to millions more Americans would be historic.

On climate change, she is as aggressive as any of her rivals on the things that matter most. Her plan would expand renewable fuels and put a price on carbon to lower emissions to net zero by 2050. She would, in her first 100 days, rejoin the community of nations fighting global warming, restore plans to cut emissions at power plants, and make our cars more fuel efficient.

Klobuchar offers an aggressive, wide-ranging agenda in those first 100 days to improve the daily lives of Americans.

She would protect health care coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions. She would grant the FDA authority to import less expensive prescription drugs from Canada, easing the burden on Americans. She would expand VA health benefits for women and propose new investments for public education to help teachers, poor students and those with disabilities. She would launch new initiatives to address mental health and addiction issues in this country.

Klobuchar offers ideas to expand paid family leave to up to 12 weeks and raise worker pay.

She has a real infrastructure plan.

On foreign policy, she offers a clear vision and sensible approach. She would turn again to diplomacy. She would stand up to China but take a more sensible approach. She recognizes the value of foreign aid and trade to our international alliances. She would work immediately to beef up cybersecurity.

Klobuchar's agenda impressed us, but it wasn't what impressed us most.

This editorial board has had the opportunity to sit down with nearly a dozen candidates, most of them for an hour and some for longer. We heard lots of plans, lots of debate. We got to hear how each would work to get their ideas through Congress.

Klobuchar convinced us she is the one who is most likely to be successful.

A Minnesotan and former prosecutor, Klobuchar is a pragmatist. But she also struck us as a good strategist. She knows well the members of the Senate, where so many good ideas have been stymied. She convinced us she knows the levers to pull, the incentives to offer, and where to turn to get the votes needed for success.

She's led on dozens of bipartisan proposals that have cleared Congress. She worked on the bipartisan immigration bill that cleared the Senate in 2013. The legislation failed in the House, but Senate passage was a significant achievement in itself.

During this campaign, Klobuchar has tried to persuade Democrats she can beat President Donald Trump; that she appeals to voters who live in places like rural and rust-belt America who turned to Trump in 2016.

We think there’s something to that. (We would note we won't make a general election endorsement until later this year. But if Democrats are basing their decision on who can win in the fall, it's hard to beat Klobuchar's appeal.)

More importantly to us, Amy Klobuchar is somebody who offers the most hope among the Democratic candidates that progress isn’t just a campaign slogan destined to die in the harsh reality of Washington politics.

We believe she can actually cut through the obstacles and move forward; that her Midwestern grit is a reason for hope.

We endorse Amy Klobuchar.

Iowa State Senator Rich Taylor Endorses Amy Klobuchar for President

Senator Klobuchar Now Has the Support of More Sitting Iowa Legislators Than Any Other Candidate

DES MOINES, IA — Iowa State Senator Rich Taylor today endorsed U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar for President, citing her knowledge of the agriculture industry and strong support for labor in his decision. With Taylor’s endorsement, Klobuchar now has the support of more current Iowa legislators than any other candidate in the field.

“Amy Klobuchar has a deep understanding of agriculture and labor, two issues critical in Iowa," said Iowa State Senator and Assistant Democratic Leader Rich Taylor. "As a Senator from the heartland and a Senior Member of the Agriculture Committee, Amy knows the importance of supporting our farmers. As the daughter of a union teacher and granddaughter of an iron ore miner, Amy has seen firsthand how labor helps working families and knows that we must protect these hard-fought rights. I am proud to endorse Amy's candidacy for president, and excited to be part of the broad coalition of Iowa legislators supporting her."

Taylor is currently serving his second term in the Iowa Senate representing Henry and Lee Counties, in addition to parts of Washington and Jefferson Counties. He is the ranking Democrat on the Iowa Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee. Taylor also serves on the Agriculture, Judiciary, and Labor and Business Relations Committees.

A longtime labor and public safety activist, Taylor is a member of AFSCME Local 2989, for which he previously served as Treasurer.

Klobuchar, who has been widely praised for her legislative record in the U.S. Senate, has the support of more than 20 current and former members of the Iowa Legislature -- the most of any candidate. Each time she has led the ticket as a Senate candidate in Minnesota, Democrats have flipped the State House of Representatives from Republican to Democratic control.

Earlier this week, Amy For America announced it would hold a “Full Klobuchar Day of Action,” which will consist of grassroots organizing events in all of Iowa’s 99 counties in a single day -- this Saturday, January 11.

Other sitting legislators supporting Klobuchar include:
  • Iowa Senator Kevin Kinney
  • Iowa Senator Liz Mathis

Iowa State Senator Kevin Kinney, State Representative Sharon Steckman Endorse Amy Klobuchar for President

Senator Klobuchar’s Lead in Legislative Endorsements Continues to Grow

DES MOINES, IA — Iowa State Senator Kevin Kinney and State Representative Sharon Steckman today endorsed Senator Amy Klobuchar for President. Kinney cited Senator Klobuchar’s record of supporting rural communities in announcing his support, while Steckman lauded her ability to connect with everyday Americans and bridge the urban-rural divide.

“Amy connects with people on a very personal level and makes them feel seen and heard,” said State Senator Kevin Kinney. “Her track record of working across the aisle and prioritizing rural communities is second to none. I believe Amy will be able to uniquely relate to voters across Iowa and the Midwest who have felt overlooked in recent years. I look forward to caucusing for her in February.”

“Amy Klobuchar understands that to win this election with a mandate, the nominee has to be able to reach out to people of all backgrounds,” said State Representative and Assistant House Minority Leader Sharon Steckman. “In the years I’ve known Amy personally, I’ve watched her succeed in bringing both sides together to pass meaningful legislation that has improved peoples’ lives. In recent months I’ve had the opportunity to campaign with a number of presidential candidates. I believe that Amy has the agenda, vision and determination to make a difference for rural communities like mine in North Iowa as well as urban centers across the country. She’ll be a president who speaks to the interests of all Americans.”

Kinney — who represents Washington County as well as portions of Johnson and Keokuk Counties — currently serves as the ranking Democrat on the State Senate’s Agriculture Committee. Steckman has represented her North Iowa district since 2009 and was elected as Assistant Minority Leader in 2018.

Klobuchar picks up endorsements from State Rep. Cindy Winckler, Fremont County Dems Chair

DES MOINES, IA — U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar today received the endorsement of two additional Iowa leaders: State Representative Cindy Winckler and Fremont County Democratic Party Chair Alice Hodde.

Winckler, who has represented Davenport in the State House since 2001, praised Klobuchar’s record of achievement in the Senate in her endorsement

“A leader is someone who builds relationships and finds common ground, while holding steadfast to her values and core principles. Amy Klobuchar has done this time and time again as the lead Democrat on over 100 bipartisan bills that have become law,” said Iowa Representative Cindy Winckler. “Her remarkable record of accomplishment as a legislator is matched by her commitment to bringing civility back to our politics. We need a President who will have the respect of the Congress and can bring meaningful policy to completion. I’m proud to support Amy’s campaign and look forward to caucusing for her in February.”

Winckler currently represents House District 90, and has been a key leader in the Davenport area for decades. As a legislator, she has been a champion for public education, access to affordable health insurance and gender equity in the workplace. Winckler has also fought for legislation to boost wages and to expand access to affordable child care for Iowa’s working families.

She currently serves as a commissioner on the Education Commission of the States and has been a member of organizations including the Leadership Partnership with School Administrators of Iowa, the Department of Education Advisory Board for the University of Northern Iowa, and the Scott County Kids Early Iowa Board.

Hodde, a longtime local party activist and community leader, praised Klobuchar’s policy priorities in announcing her support.

“From the moment I first saw Amy Klobuchar in action, I was immediately impressed with her poise, grit and grace under pressure. Beyond her impressive legislative record, Amy connects with voters on a human level and understands their everyday struggles,” said Fremont County Democratic Party Chair Alice Hodde. “She is focused on the issues that matter most to Iowans, including affordable healthcare, education and protecting our farmers and rural communities. I believe she’s the right candidate for Iowa and I’m thrilled to support her campaign.”

Klobuchar, who is one of only six candidates to qualify for the December Democratic debate, has the support of more current and former Iowa legislators than any other Democratic candidate. She recently completed her 23rd trip to Iowa and has now visited 60 of the state’s 99 counties.

Former U.S. Attorney, Leading Iowa Democrat Roxanne Conlin Endorses Amy Klobuchar for President

“Amy Is the Right Person to Unite Our Party, Defeat Donald Trump and Make Meaningful Change as President”

DES MOINES, IA — Roxanne Conlin, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa and one of the most prominent Democrats in the Hawkeye state, today endorsed U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar for president. Conlin’s endorsement, which was sought by a number of campaigns, comes on the eve of the Iowa Democratic Party’s Liberty and Justice Celebration in Des Moines, where Senator Klobuchar is set to speak.

Conlin, an Iowa native and past Democratic nominee for governor and U.S. Senate, also served as the first female president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. She cited Klobuchar’s extensive record as one of the nation’s most effective legislators in announcing her support.

“Amy Klobuchar’s vision, values and lengthy record as one of the most effective members of the U.S. Senate sets her apart from other candidates for the Democratic nomination,” said former U.S. Attorney Roxanne Conlin. “I’ve met with many of the candidates in recent months and studied their records and positions on the issues. Given her wealth of experience, I am convinced that Amy is the right person to unite our party, defeat Donald Trump and make meaningful change as president. I am proud to endorse her and look forward to campaigning with her in the weeks and months leading up to the Iowa Caucuses.”

Conlin served as Assistant Attorney General for Iowa from 1969 until 1976, where she served as head of the Iowa Civil Rights section. In 1977, she became one of the first two women to ever be appointed as a U.S. Attorney. She was the Iowa Democratic Party’s nominee for Governor in 1982 and the nominee for U.S. Senate in 2010.

Throughout her lengthy and distinguished legal career, Conlin has established herself as a fervent advocate for working people, the most recent example being her representation of Iowa Workers’ Compensation Commissioner Chris Godfrey, who sued former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad over workplace discrimination. In July, a jury awarded Godfrey $1.5 million after finding that Branstad and a staffer discriminated against Godfrey because he is gay and retaliated against him by cutting his salary by $40,000 in 2011.

Conlin joins a long and growing list of other activists, community leaders and elected officials who have endorsed Klobuchar in recent weeks. Klobuchar currently has the support of 13 current and former Iowa legislators, more than any other candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The Minnesota Senator is currently on her 22nd visit to Iowa since announcing her candidacy for president. To date, she has visited 56 of the state’s 99 counties and has received donations from all 99.

Iowa State Senator Liz Mathis, State Representative Andy McKean Endorse Amy Klobuchar for President

New pair of legislative endorsements come after Klobuchar’s strong debate performance

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — Iowa State Senator Liz Mathis and State Representative Andy McKean today endorsed U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar for President. Mathis has represented Senate District 34 since 2011 and becomes Klobuchar’s first endorsement from a sitting member of the Iowa Senate.

McKean, who switched from the Republican to Democratic Party in April over objections to Donald Trump’s conduct, cited Klobuchar’s vision, experience and desire to unite the country in announcing his support.

“Having the support of Sen. Liz Mathis and Rep. Andy McKean is a testament to the growing enthusiasm we see across Iowa for Amy Klobuchar’s candidacy,” said Lauren Dillon, Iowa State Director. “With the addition of these two renowned lawmakers, Sen. Klobuchar now has the support of 13 current and former members of the Iowa Legislature - more than any other Democratic candidate for president. We’re thrilled to have their support as we kick off our ‘For All of America’ bus tour to take this campaign’s message across the Hawkeye State.”

During her time in the Senate, Mathis has been a leader in efforts to protect collective bargaining rights, expand access to affordable health care and invest in mental health services, particularly for children.

“Throughout her career, Amy has worked tirelessly to address the needs of working families, including affordable healthcare and mental health services,” said Senator Liz Mathis. “Our country needs a leader with Amy’s priorities in the White House, and that’s why I am thrilled to endorse her for the Democratic nomination for president.”

McKean made national headlines in April when he publicly announced he was leaving the Republican Party to become a Democrat. At the time, he was the longest-serving Republican in the history of the State Legislature.

“Amy Klobuchar has a proven record of leadership, and I am proud to support her campaign for president,” said Representative Andy McKean. “Since her election in 2006, Amy has been one of the most effective members of the U.S. Senate, leading more than 100 bills and amendments that have become law. She has the smarts, vision, and grit we need to defeat Donald Trump and reunite the country.”

McKean is the second Iowa legislator who left the Republican Party while in office, citing Donald Trump and the actions of the current Republican Party in their decision to switch parties. The other, former State Senator David Johnson, has also endorsed Klobuchar.

The endorsements come as Klobuchar prepares to kick off her 3-day “For All of America” bus tour across Eastern and Central Iowa, which will take her to a number of Obama-Trump pivot counties. Both McKean and Mathis will appear with Klobuchar at her kickoff event in Cedar Rapids this morning.

Former President of National Corn Growers Association and Iowa Farmers Endorse Amy Klobuchar for President

DES MOINES, IA — Following the release of U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar’s Plan for the Heartland, which lays out her economic agenda to strengthen our agricultural and rural communities, bridge the rural-urban divide, and make sure that kids who grow up in rural America can stay in rural America, a crop of Iowa farmers announced their endorsement of Klobuchar for President.

Klobuchar spent last week in Iowa where she traveled to 20 counties in three days, 17 of which were counties that Trump won in 2016, to lay out her Plan for the Heartland.

New endorsers include:

Pam Johnson - Former President of the National Corn Growers Association, corn and soybean farmer (Floyd, IA)
Dave and Mary Jensen - Retired commodity crop farming family (Iowa Falls, IA)
Dan and Allison Sorenson - Cattleman, commodity crops farmers (Dickens, IA)

“As a corn and soybean farmer and the first woman President of the National Corn Growers Association I’m excited to caucus for Amy Klobuchar,”said Pam Johnson, former President of the National Corn Growers Association. “Farmers and rural communities are suffering under President Trump’s trade and agricultural policies. I had the opportunity to hear Amy’s plan for rural America and it resonated with me. She called out Trump’s tariffs and his small refinery exemptions that are destroying demand for the crops and the products we farmers grow. Amy has a proven track record, she understands agriculture policy, and she’ll stand up for rural America. I know that Amy not only understands rural America, but she cares about rural America.”

“I’m caucusing for Amy because she knows how to get things done. She has experience with the issues farmers face every day and, with her position on the Senate Agriculture Committee, she has solutions to those problems. Amy has shown she can win in Trump country and that’s really important,” said Mary and Dave Jensen, retired commodity crop farming family in Iowa Falls

“Amy sat at our table last week to discuss her plan for rural America and listen to the issues we care about,” said commodity crop farmer and cattleman Dan Sorenson. “She doesn’t shy away from the issues -- she knows what she’s talking about and she says the truth. That matters here in Iowa and in the Midwest. We need to win in 2020 and she’s the person to do it.”

Klobuchar has previously received endorsements from several current and former Iowa legislators and political and community activists, including:
