April 20: Presidential Primary Forum to Focus on Women of Color Voters

She the People Announces Primary Forum Focused on Issues Important to Women of Color Voters April 20th at Houston HBCU Texas Southern

SAN FRANCISCO -- Today, She the People -- a national network of women of color in politics - - announced plans for the first-ever Presidential primary candidate forum focused on issues important to women of color. The forum will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Texas Southern University (TSU) from 4pm - 7pm CST. TSU is one of the nation’s largest public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

“To win in 2020, Democrats will need women of color to vote, organize, and advocate for politics that inspire the new American majority,” said Aimee Allison, founder of She the People. “That’s why it’s long past time for a Presidential primary forum to focus on the issues that most impact women of color. We are thrilled to announce this incredibly important forum, and to host it at Texas Southern University.”

She the People anticipates more than 1,000 women of color, including elected officials and candidates, movement leaders, political strategists, and voters from dozens of states to attend the forum. Audience members -- comprised of women of color of all ages, religions, sexual orientations, and ethnicities -- will submit questions for consideration. Texas partners co-hosting the forum include the Texas Future Project and the Texas Organizing Project. The forum will be livestreamed in its entirety.

She the People will extend invitations to declared candidates for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. The candidates will appear on stage one-by-one during the forum. Each candidate will give opening and closing statements and have an opportunity to answer questions posed by audience members. The forum presents a historic opportunity to focus the nation and presidential campaigns on women of color.

She the People will also be doing periodic polls throughout the primary season of women of color. This will include polls of women of color voters in key primary states and polls of She the People’s diverse network of women of color influencers working in politics. The first national straw poll of She the People members was released in December, and found Sen. Kamala Harris with a commanding lead, followed by Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

Last year, She the People hosted the first-ever national summit of women of color in politics in San Francisco to a sold-out crowd of nearly 600, and momentum continues as we head toward 2020.

“Women of color are a key voting bloc for anyone who wants to win in 2020, so we look forward to seeing how every candidate will address our issues at this historic forum,” concluded Allison.
