Candidate Forum to Focus on Empowerment of African American Voters

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Branch of the NAACP, KCCI and the Des Moines Register will host a presidential candidates forum Saturday, Nov. 2, focused on the economic empowerment of African American voters.

Candidates who have committed to taking part in the forum include Michael Bennet, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julián Castro, John Delaney, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders, Joe Sestak, Tom Steyer and Andrew Yang.

The Economic Freedom Presidential Town Hall forum is part of the NAACP’s economic sustainability mission which reads, “A chance to live the American Dream for all. Every person will have equal opportunity to achieve economic success, sustainability, and financial security.”

The event will be moderated by Kameron Middlebrooks, president of the Des Moines branch of the NAACP, Tisia Muzinga, Anchor/Reporter at KCCI, and Rekha Basu, Opinion Columnist, the Des Moines Register.

The forum will be held in Sheslow Auditorium at Drake University in Des Moines. Doors open at 8 a.m. The first candidate will speak at 9 a.m. with the event concluding by 2 p.m.

“We believe everyone should have equal opportunity to achieve economic success, sustainability, and financial security,” said Kameron Middlebrooks, president of the Des Moines branch of the NAACP. “Economic Sustainability is a Game Changer element of our national strategic plan and we look forward to hearing from these presidential candidates about their specific plans to develop wealth in the African American community and eliminate the many disparate gaps communities of color face in America’s economic landscape.”

“KCCI is committed to connecting Iowa voters with the candidates running for president,” said Brian Sather, KCCI president and general manager. “This forum is a unique opportunity for voters to hear how those candidates might have a real impact on their lives.”

“The Des Moines Register is proud to join in hosting a forum on this important issue, underscored by the recent “Race in the Heartland” report that found wide racial disparities in economic opportunities and outcomes in Midwestern states,” said Register executive editor Carol Hunter.

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Those interested in attending need to register via this link: https://www.naacpdesmoines.org/events-1/economic-freedom-town-hall.

Parking is available in the lot northeast of Sheslow Auditorium.

The event will be live streamed on KCCI.com and DesMoinesRegister.com. Live coverage rights are exclusive to KCCI and the Des Moines Register.

The mission of the Des Moines Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination in all areas of our lives here in the Des Moines Metro.
