subject: What are voters looking for in 2020?

Dear Friend of Children,

The 2020 elections are around the corner and presidential candidates are flocking to Iowa, home of the first-in-the-nation caucus, to try to win over voters and build momentum in the race for the presidency. It’s not just candidates gaining momentum, though: some key issues are starting to break through the noise. We zeroed in on Iowa, too, to try to get a sense of where voters stand and what they are looking for from candidates heading into 2020.

Iowa Voters: Kids’ Issues are Top Priority

A new poll by Selzer & Company revealed that 80% of Iowa voters believe “improving the health, education, and wellbeing of children” is a high priority that presidential candidates need to address. In fact, more voters identified children’s wellbeing as their priority over any other issue, including creating jobs and balancing the budget. Read coverage of our poll results.

Candidates Must Address Children and Family Issues

Last week, the Every Child Matters team gathered with advocates, parents, educators, and young children to announce the results of the poll and to call on candidates to address the issues affecting children and families. We were joined by Jennifer Harris, an Iowa mom who is battling breast cancer while raising her young son. "My son has to go with me to chemo," she said, urging candidates to focus on affordable child care and other issues affecting families like hers. "That's very sad."

Watch the full video of Jennifer’s powerful testimony.

The Caucus for Kids campaign, led by the Children’s Policy Coalition and more than 20 organizations it represents, has invited all 25 declared candidates to participate in a “Facebook Live Candidate Conversation Series” to speak with advocates, service providers, and parents about the issues affecting Iowa’s children and families. Be sure to like and follow the Every Child Matters Facebook page so you can participate in these important conversations.
