AAPI Victory Fund Endorses Joe Biden for President

Today, the AAPI Victory Fund — an organization focused on mobilizing Asian American & Pacific Island voters — announced its endorsement of Joe Biden for President of the United States. The Asian American & Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Victory Fund Chair Shekar Narasimhan released the following statement announcing the endorsement:

“We believe that Joe Biden is the best candidate to defeat Trump and lead our country. Out of all the presidential candidates, he has the most experience and cares deeply about AAPI issues. In our view, Joe can lead us to a safer, more stable world, with less inequality and more justice.

“We make this endorsement with enormous respect for the three AAPI candidates and others who entered the presidential race. There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done in the next ten months, and AAPIs are more engaged than ever. We are committed to continuing our work for 2020 victories and delivering one million new voters for Joe Biden to win the Presidency and for Democrats to increase their House majority and to take back the Senate.”

Founded in 2015, AAPI Victory Fund is focused on mobilizing and elevating the AAPI community in local and national politics. In 2020, the AAPI Victory Fund is targeting key states where eligible AAPI voters exceed the presidential vote margin in 2016. In each of these states, the AAPI Victory Fund is building databases of AAPI voters, grassroots donors, volunteers, and leaders with a focus on persuasion, activation, and turnout.

The AAPI community will be decisive in determining the outcome in key battleground states like Nevada, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, and Arizona in 2020.

Biden for President has previously announced more than 1,100 endorsements from national, state and local leaders, including current and former U.S. senators and representatives, governors, state elected officials, community leaders and national security officials.

About the AAPI Victory Fund

AN UNPRECEDENTED VEHICLE FOR INFLUENCE.
The AAPI Victory Fund – the first Super PAC of its kind – is focused on mobilizing Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) eligible voters and moving them to the ballot box. The AAPI community is joined through our values of hard work, family, and our history as immigrants. With the AAPI eligible voters exceeding that of the margin of victory in numerous districts and states, we have an opportunity under a common agenda to bring AAPI voters into position to make or break outcomes for candidates across the country.

BUILDING SUSTAINED POWER BEHIND A COMMON AGENDA.
As a Super PAC built around the experiences, knowledge, and leadership of the AAPI community, we are taking control of our own opportunity to make an impact with elected leaders who will represent our values and issues.

Today, the AAPI community faces the biggest threat to its civil rights since the Internment of the Japanese Americans in World War II, which notably started with a Presidential Executive Order – EO 9066. As we have made strides toward equality, Donald Trump’s presidency will bring us back decades. During the first weeks of his presidency, he issued discriminatory Executive Orders that have polarized a nation. And with more to come, we are committed to fight against the exclusionary policies of the Trump Administration and those elected leaders that support him.

We are the strongest voices for ourselves. The Victory Fund is leading the way for the AAPI community to power and sustain its way to the political forefront. We will mobilize a broad population – from millennials, to young professionals, to baby boomers, to seniors – to support a common agenda. We aim to demonstrate the AAPI force not just in numbers, but also in its leverage on the issues that impact and matter to us.

KNOWLEDGE OF THE AAPI COMMUNITY.
As a diverse and dynamic population, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at the forefront of the shaping of a new America. With a population of more than 21 million and representing 6 percent of the country’s population, we are the fastest-growing minority groups in the United States. Our population encompasses dozens of communities with roots from countries in East, South, and Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have vast ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity. (The U.S. Census Bureau reports national data on 23 distinct Asian American groups and 19 distinct Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander groups.) Some of our families came to the United States several generations ago, while others among us are part of newer waves of immigration that are contributing to the influential growth of our community. The AAPI community also represents 28 percent of 3.3 million Muslims living in the United States. With an understanding of the tremendous diversity within our community, the Victory Fund will leverage our vast community’s potential for impact.

REALIZING THE POTENTIAL FOR THE AAPI VOTE SHARE.
Increasing voter registration and turnout rates is key to achieving AAPI impact as an election game-changer. Voter registration and turnout are significantly lower among AAPIs than national averages, and it is time for that to change. For example, voter registration among AAPIs is more than 10 percent below the national average, and up to 12 percent below the non-AAPI rates in targeted states. More than one-third of registered AAPI voters don’t turn out at the ballot box. The Victory Fund’s work will aim to close these gaps.
