Voto Latino Registers 202,419 Voters for 2020 Cycle

Washington, DC – Voto Latino, the nation’s premier Latinx voter registration organization, has officially registered over 202,419 voters for the 2020 election cycle, bringing the organization’s total registrations to over 700,000 voters. 128,322 of those registrations have come from Texas alone. The group has also reached 13,219 registrations in North Carolina and 10,265 in Georgia, both considered key battleground states in November.

“Voto Latino is doing the necessary work to educate, engage, and empower eligible Latinx voters across the country and blasting right through the 200,000 mark proves that,” said María Teresa Kumar, Voto Latino President and CEO. “Especially now, in the face COVID and demands for justice across the country, we are continuing to register voters at scale, through a culturally competent and digital-first approach. People across this country are aware that one of the most effective tools for creating real, long-lasting change is to go to the polls and make their voices heard. For 15 years, Voto Latino has provided an accessible pathway to do so and we are well on track to hit our goal of 500,000 registrations before Election Day 2020.”

Voto Latino’s internal data and tracking has shown a significant surge in registrations since protests against police brutality on the Black community began nearly three weeks ago. The organization is on pace to hit and potentially exceed 500,000 voter registrations this cycle, which would bring its total to well over 1 million voters registered in 15 years. Voto Latino is also working to ensure that all eligible voters are able to cast their ballots safely and without the threat of contracting COVID-19. Not one voter should have to choose between their rights and their health.

Julián Castro, Former HUD Secretary and Presidential Candidate, Joins Forces with Voto Latino; Voto Latino Commits to Registering over 1 Million Voters

Castro Sees Voto Latino as the Largest and Most Successful Organization Leading Critical Latinx Voter Registration and Mobilization Efforts for 2020 Election

WASHINGTON, May 26, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Voto Latino announced that former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and recent Presidential Candidate Julián Castro, will join forces with the organization as an advisor, supporting their efforts to engage the Latinx vote ahead of the November election. Castro's experience and dedication to the social welfare and political organization of the Latinx community will be critical to accelerating Voto Latino's work to uplift Latinx political power heading into the general election. Castro will add to the organization's capacity to reach and influence the nation's second-largest voting bloc.

"As I said during my campaign for president, the Latinx community will determine the outcome of November's election," said Secretary Castro. "At a time when Latinos are routinely targeted by the Trump administration and disproportionately hurt by the impact of COVID-19, Voto Latino is doing critical work to register and empower the 32 million eligible Latinx voters across the country. Their fifteen-year proven track record of registering Latinx voters using the most sophisticated, digital native campaigns has cultivated the trust of our community and has resulted in 79% of Voto Latino-registered voter turnout at the polls. I'm proud to partner with Maria Teresa and her team at Voto Latino in this effort, and look forward to Latinx voters saying 'adios' to Donald Trump in November."

"Secretary Castro has been a champion of our community for years and Voto Latino is excited to welcome him," said María Teresa Kumar, Founding President and CEO of Voto Latino. "This particular moment in history is one in which his unique perspective and counsel will be crucial to registering Latinx voters, protecting the health and safety of all voters across the country, and defeating Donald Trump. As we accelerate our proven systems and technology to register 1 million voters, Julián will hit the ground running to amplify Voto Latino's mission in the halls of power."

Secretary Castro joins the organization as Voto Latino launched the Immigrant Neighbor Fund, led a lawsuit in Texas against unconstitutional voting restrictions, and made its first-ever political endorsement.

Voto Latino is the nation's largest political organization focused on registering and activating Latinx voters. Its grassroots efforts are focused on educating and empowering a new generation of Latinx voters, in addition to creating a more robust and inclusive democracy. Through innovative digital campaigns, culturally relevant programs, and authentic voices, we shepherd the Latinx community towards the full realization of its political power. Voto Latino is committed to registering 1 million voters for the 2020 political cycle.

Julián Castro served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama. Before that, he was Mayor of his native city San Antonio, Texas — the youngest mayor of a Top 50 American city at the time. In 2012 he gave a rousing keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention, during which he described the American Dream as a relay to be passed from generation to generation. Secretary Castro launched a campaign for president in 2020 grounded in the belief that every American should count, and that Washington should put people—not big, special interests—first.

VOTO LATINO ANNOUNCES $500,000 DONATION FROM MIKE BLOOMBERG TO SUPPORT EFFORT TO MOBILIZE ONE MILLION LATINX VOTERS TO THE POLLS

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Voto Latino announced a $500,000 donation from Mike Bloomberg that will help fund its efforts to register 500,000 new voters this election cycle. This investment will support efforts to enfranchise one million young Latinx voters across Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, among other key states come November.

Running a first-of-its-kind, aggressive, digital voter registration program during the primaries, Voto Latino is on its way to meeting its goal. It has registered more than 81,000 citizens, provided 13,000 rides to the polls, and made more than 88,000 voter contacts to date. Seventy five percent of those registered are between 18 to 34 years olds. This $500,000 donation will go directly towards Voto Latino’s efforts to expand the electoral base. The organization has set a goal of registering half a million new voters this year and mobilizing one million low propensity voters by Election Day 2020.

“Four million young people who heard the president call their loved ones criminals and rapists have come of age since those terrible remarks and will be eligible to cast a vote for the very first time this November. Bloomberg’s investment allows Voto Latino to further educate, engage and empower the Latinx community to register to vote and turn out to the polls,” said Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino. “This election will be a referendum on the politics of hate and divisiveness. Latinx voters will make up the second-largest voting bloc for the first time in US history and they will cast their ballots in November to protect their community. Our democracy is only as strong as our participation within it. We welcome Bloomberg’s partnership in this fight.”

“President Trump has spent four years attacking and slandering Latino communities, but in November, Latinos will have a chance to make their voices heard," said Mike Bloomberg. "We need to make sure that Latinos who are eligible to vote are registered and that we get them to the polls – and I'm supporting Voto Latino to help achieve both goals. Voto Latino – along with other voter registration and protection groups I'm supporting, including Collective Future and Fair Fight – will play a critical role in the November election, and the voters they mobilize could prove to be the difference in races up and down the ballot."

Voto Latino runs voter registration programs at scale and turns them out to the polls. In 2018, it registered over 202,000 voters - 77% who cast a vote, including 15% of all new voters in Texas.
