Sikh Coalition Announces National Sikh Voter Registration Day, Free Tools to Increase Sikh American Civic Engagement in 2020 Election

July 1, 2020 (New York, NY) -- Today, the Sikh Coalition is announcing new “Get Out The Vote” (GOTV) efforts in advance of the 2020 U.S. election, including National Sikh Voter Registration Day to be held on Sunday, September 20.

“All Sikh Americans have a responsibility to check their voter registration, make a voting plan, and cast their ballots in this year’s election,” said Nikki Singh, Sikh Coalition Policy and Advocacy Manager. “It will take more than individual actions to make the Sikh voice heard, though, which is why the Sikh Coalition is planning National Sikh Voter Registration Day as well as organizing and training Sikh voter registration volunteers for GOTV work across the nation.”

In advance of National Sikh Voter Registration Day, anyone who is interested in joining this nationwide team of Sikh voter registration volunteers can
fill out a volunteer survey here. In the weeks ahead, volunteers will be trained and equipped with a toolkit to help register members of their sangat to vote. The Sikh Coalition is looking to engage as many of the more than 250 gurdwaras across the United States as possible in this effort; the more sevadaars who are equipped with knowledge specific to their local election rules, the more successfully Sikh voices will be elevated nationwide.

In addition to recruiting and training volunteers, the Sikh Coalition is also offering free election 2020 resources to the Sikh community. First among these is our
2020 Civic Action Center, powered by Phone2Action, which allows anyone in the United States to check their voter registration status, register to vote, learn more about the candidates on their ballots, and easily find election information like deadlines, polling places, and more.

In the coming weeks and months, the Sikh Coalition will continue to provide information pertaining to GOTV and civic engagement--especially as the situation around absentee ballots, provisional ballots, and vote-by-mail continues to change in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. New resources and announcements will be posted to
our 2020 GOTV website, and anyone can reach out to gotv@sikhcoalition.org with questions.

The Sikh Coalition is committed to increasing Sikh Americans’ civic engagement throughout 2020, including by boosting participation in the 2020 Census, facilitating state- and national-level advocacy campaigns, and now promoting GOTV initiatives. With respect to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to adjust organizing plans in both virtual and physical spaces in accordance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and other public health officials.
