COVID-19 presented unprecedented challenges for convention planners.  As they emphasized safety, the Milwaukee footprint shrank.  In March 2020 there were hopes that the pandemic might have wound down by June, on July 24 planners announced a convention anchored in Milwaukee, and in early August they announced that none of the speakers would travel to Milwaukee.  The convention team adapted and roles evolved.  For example, DJ Sigworth started as director of hall construction, but ultimately held the role of director of remote sites.  Within the limitations of the virtual format, the team produced a pretty good facsimile, engaging and energizing participants—from delegates to casual viewers—and providing a strong launch for the Biden ticket into the homestretch of the general election campaign.
