Iowa State Fair Related Travel

The Iowa State Fair is an obligatory stop for any candidate competing in the Iowa caucuses.  At least 20 candidates will be attending.  Highlights include the Des Moines Register Soapbox, where candidates have 20 minutes to speak from a stage just off the concourse, the Iowa Democratic Party booth in the Varied Industries building. the Iowa Pork Producers tent, where they can don an apron and flip pork chops, and sometimes the butter cow.  Along the way candidates typically stop for some Fair food and something to drink.  They interact with fairgoers to varying degrees and may be trailed by a string of reporters and photographers.  This year the Fair runs from Aug. 8-18, and it will draw over a million people.  (In 2018, 1.13 million people attended the 11-day event).  Most of the candidate visits are occurring in the beginning days of the Fair.  Candidates have built trips around the Fair; notably 21 are speaking at Iowa Democratic Wing Ding in Clear Lake, 115 miles north of Des Moines, on Aug. 9.  Following mass shootings in El Paso on Aug. 3 and Dayton early on the morning of Aug. 4, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund has organized a Presidential Gun Sense Forum in Des Moines on Aug. 10.  Although the event was put together almost at the last minute, it is drawing 15 candidates.

Updated: Kamala Harris to Go River-to-River On 5-Day Iowa Bus Tour Laying Out Her ‘3AM Agenda’

Next week, Kamala Harris will barnstorm Iowa on a cross-state, river-to-river bus tour, where she will rally Iowans behind her “3AM Agenda” to address the problems that keep Americans up at night. The bus tour underscores her focus on the first 2020 Democratic contest and follows serious investment by her campaign to compete in the caucuses. 

The 5-day bus tour, from Thursday, August 8, to Monday, August 12, will engage caucusgoers from Sioux City in Northwest Iowa to Davenport in Southeast Iowa, from the Missouri River to the Mississippi. Harris will make stops across three of Iowa’s congressional districts throughout Northwestern, Northeastern, Central, and Southeastern Iowa. 

During her tour, Harris will meet with Iowans who will be positively impacted by her “3AM Agenda” from members of the disabilities community to small business owners, teachers to those who have been challenged by huge rent increases. She will visit a farm in Southeast Iowa and discuss the trade war and the climate crisis before continuing on to talk about prescription drugs and rural health care. The tour will give her an opportunity to meet caucusgoers at both small and large events, as well as in intimate settings at retail stops across Iowa. 

Since Harris’ dominant performance in the first Democratic debate, her investment in Iowa has led to growing excitement across the state. This 5-day swing comes a week after the second Democratic debates.

Tonight, Senator Harris is having dinner with Sarah Petersen, founder of a Sioux City soldier support group and Dennis Martin, a Sioux City Vietnam Veteran to discuss issues that impact the veteran population across Iowa. Petersen, a military spouse, founded the organization in 2007 to support military families and soldier during and after their service. Martin is a Blue Water Navy Veteran and has spoken up for the rights of veterans receiving proper health benefits after their service. Harris is a co-sponsor of the Blue Water Navy Veterans Act, which passed into law in June of this year, to extend disability benefits to Vietnam veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange during their military service.

THIS WEEKEND: Inslee to Barnstorm Iowa with 8 Events in 3 Days

Seattle, WA – Governor Jay Inslee will spend the weekend in Iowa with a schedule packed full of events at and around the Iowa State Fair. Inslee will meet with Iowa voters to speak about his campaign and share details of his plans to defeat the climate crisis.
 
Inslee will attend large political events with other presidential candidates, including the Democratic Wing Ding dinner, the Iowa State Fair and Political Soapbox, and the Everytown for Gun Safety candidate forum. He will continue his Iowa trip with retail politics stops, including meet and greets and a roundtable with the Cedar Rapids Corridor Conservation Coalition.

Governor Jay Inslee is the only 2020 candidate making climate change his top priority. He recently announced his “Community Climate Justice” plan, the fifth plank in Inslee’s groundbreaking climate platform, including his “100% Clean Energy for America,” "Evergreen Economy", “Global Climate Mobilization,” and “Freedom from Fossil Fuels” plans, which have been called the “gold standard” among climate change plans.

Klobuchar to Make Major Policy Announcement, Embark on 20-County Heartland Tour, and Speak at State Fair Soapbox

DES MOINES, IA - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar returns to Iowa on Wednesday for a major policy announcement. She will outline her bold, ambitious plans to help America's family farmers and revitalize rural communities. As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Amy Klobuchar has been a leading voice for farmers and, as President, she will enact an optimistic economic agenda that bridges the rural-urban divide and ensures no community gets left behind.

Following that announcement, she will embark on a 20-county tour of the state, culminating in the Iowa State Fair where Klobuchar will speak at the Des Moines Register's Political Soapbox and take in all the Fair has to offer.

Klobuchar will visit the following 20 counties during her Heartland Tour: Polk, Greene, Carroll, Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Hamilton, Hardin, Marshall, Benton, Johnson, Iowa, Linn, Cedar, Jones, Clayton, Fayette, Bremer, Butler, and Cerro Gordo. Salem, MA - From Wednesday, August 14th through Saturday, August 17th, Congressman and Presidential Candidate Seth Moulton will travel across the Midwest to continue his campaign’s commitment to meet voters where they are and compete to win in areas Democrats need to take back in order to win the White House and down-ballot races in 2020. His trip will begin in Kansas City, MO on Wednesday the 14th where he will meet with Jason Kander at the Veterans Community Project. Beto O’Rourke Cancels Weekend Campaign Events in Iowa, Will Stay in El Paso to Support Community

DES MOINES, IOWA — Beto O’Rourke has cancelled his scheduled weekend events in Iowa in order to continue supporting the El Paso community in the aftermath of Saturday’s tragic mass shooting, which claimed 22 lives in his hometown.

Beto’s Iowa campaign staff has donated blood in solidarity with El Paso and is organizing a moment of silence before Friday night’s Iowa Democratic Wing Ding in Clear Lake that all presidential campaigns are invited to join.

Warren Returns to Iowa for Road Trip to the State Fair

Charlestown, MA -  Elizabeth Warren will travel to Iowa on August 7 to kick off a four-day road trip that will take her from Council Bluffs to Des Moines with stops at the Iowa Democratic Wing Ding and the Iowa State Fair.
