Governor Bullock Rolls Out Plan to Ensure a Fair Shot for LGBTQ+ Americans

Adds to His Equality Agenda with Three Policy Announcements this Week
Helena, MT – Montana Governor Steve Bullock today rolled out his plan to ensure that all Americans have a fair shot at opportunity and freedom from discrimination — regardless of who they love or how they identify. The Trump Administration has worked tirelessly to undermine hard-won victories in LGBTQ+ rights — in healthcare, military service, and basic freedom from discrimination and harassment.

As Governor, Bullock signed a landmark executive order that provided significant protections to LGBTQ+ workers in Montana, and was the first governor of Montana to officiate a same sex wedding ceremony. As President, he’ll continue to fight for LGBTQ+ Americans by passing the Equality Act, ending healthcare discrimination, banning conversion therapy, and welcoming transgender Americans to serve openly and proudly in our military.

“Every American deserves a fair shot at success, but systemic discrimination has blocked far too many members of the LGBTQ+ community from those same opportunities,” said Montana Governor Steve Bullock. “My administration will make it a priority to reverse Donald Trump’s efforts to marginalize people based on who they love and how they identify, and codify civil rights protections into federal law by passing the Equality Act. Together, we can ensure freedom from bigotry and intolerance, and guarantee equal rights and opportunity for all.”

A Fair Shot for LGBTQ+ Americans

  • Pass the Equality Act, a landmark bill that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Millions of Americans live in states where they can still be fired from their job based on who they love.
  • Prevent and prosecute acts of violence against the LGBTQ community - particularly transgender women of color, who are disproportionately targeted.
  • End healthcare discrimination by repealing President Trump’s executive order allowing healthcare providers to deny services to LGBTQ Americans.
  • Honor and support all who serve our nation by welcoming transgender Americans to serve openly and proudly in our military.
  • Take on school bullying to make our schools safe for all students, including LGBTQ children. That is why Steve supports the Student Non-Discrimination Act and the Safe School Improvements Act.
  • Promote global LGBTQ equality and ensure our embassies and consulates stand with advocates working throughout the world to secure equality.
  • Ban conversion therapy, a disproven and dangerous procedure based on the false notion that sexual orientation is a mental illness.
  • End bias and discrimination against Americans with HIV by repealing criminal liability against those who have HIV.
  • Ensure LGBTQ Americans are seen and heard in all parts of the policymaking process by ensuring federal data is inclusive and accurate.
  • Allow for gender neutral passports.
  • Direct the TSA to treat transgender and gender non-confirming individuals fairly and with respect.
