Iowa Education Leaders Endorse Governor Bullock

Four New Endorsers Cite Governor Bullock’s Plan to Revitalize Public Schools, Record of Investments in Education

Des Moines, IA – Following the release of his plan to revitalize public education, today four Iowa education leaders announced their endorsement of Montana Governor Steve Bullock:

  • Former Iowa Career & Technical Education Director, Roger Foelske
  • Former President of Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, John Hartung
  • Former President of Missouri National Education Association, former Executive Director of South Dakota Education Association, and Fremont County Resident, Lona Lewis
  • Former Benton Community School Board President, Daniel Voss
The group of educators cite Governor Bullock’s extensive record of progressive victories for students and workers, including freezing college tuition, expanding apprenticeship and workforce training, and making record investments in K-12 education. Governor Bullock has now received the endorsement of 20 Iowa Democratic officials, activists, and community leaders.

“The same public-school upbringing that was afforded to my wife and me is now educating my kids for a lifetime of success – and I will never stop fighting until every American has that same opportunity,” said Montana Governor Steve Bullock. “When we invest in our public schools, we put our nation on the pathway to success. With the help of these Iowa education leaders, I look forward to revitalizing our public schools to ensure that every child has a fair shot at success.”

Roger Foelske, former Bureau Chief and State Director for Career and Technical Education (CTE) at the Iowa Department of Education:
“It has never been more important for our country to invest in our workforce – I’m supporting the candidate who’s proven they can get it done. In Montana, Steve created new opportunities for educational advancement. As President, he’ll revitalize workforce training so everyone can find success in the 21st century economy. Steve has demonstrated he can make the changes we need, and that’s why he’s earned my endorsement.”
Lona Lewis, former President of the Missouri National Education Association, former Executive Director of the South Dakota Education Association, and a Fremont County resident:
“Governor Steve Bullock will never back down from standing up for public education. As President, he’ll take an innovative approach to ensure quality community schools are available for every child in America – beginning with appointing a Secretary of Education who puts students first. He’ll also support the needs and rights of educators in the classroom so they can teach the next generation. I’m excited to caucus for Steve, the leader who will keep ‘public’ in ‘public education.’”
Dr. John Hartung, former President of Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities:
“Governor Steve Bullock has dedicated his public service to building common ground and getting things done. As most states were cutting school funding, Steve stood with students and educators to ensure a quality education is affordable for everyone. Just as important, his track record of progress on issues from campaign finance reform and healthcare to protecting our environment are unmatched. I know that as President, his leadership will keep our nation moving forward.”
Daniel Voss, former President of the Benton Community School Board:
“Governor Steve Bullock sets himself apart with his unique understanding of the challenges facing education in small-town America. With broader districts and smaller budgets, rural schools need that extra boost to deliver the quality of education we know we can provide, and Steve will get us there. I am proud to support his campaign to ensure that a strong public education is available in every community across Iowa.”

Governor Bullock Announces Four New Iowa Endorsements

Democratic Leaders Call Governor Bullock the Leader to Safeguard Democracy, Fight for Rural Iowa

Des Moines, IA – Today, Montana Governor Steve Bullock announced four new endorsements from Democratic leaders across Iowa:

  • Woodbury County Supervisor Marty Pottebaum
  • Clinton County Auditor Eric Van Lancker
  • Former Iowa Senate Assistant Majority Leader Staci Appel
  • Former Warren County Democratic Party Chair Don Ruby
The new endorsements bring the number of Iowa Democratic leaders who have endorsed Governor Bullock for President to 16 – spanning local government, education, agriculture, and community activism. They're backing Bullock’s campaign because he’s the proven leader who can beat Donald Trump, repair our broken politics, and ensure every Iowan gets a fair shot at success.

“I’m so pleased to stand with these great Democratic leaders as we grow our campaign in communities from river to river,” said Montana Governor Steve Bullock. “This election is about more than beating Donald Trump. It’s about finally fixing our broken politics and ensuring every American gets a fair shot at success.”

Marty Pottebaum, Woodbury County Supervisor

“Governor Steve Bullock is proof that our politics doesn’t have to be as broken as it seems. He’s governed a red state while passing major progressive victories; and he’s won elections in the same places we need to win in 2020. Steve can not only win the Iowa Caucus, he can help turn Iowa blue and elect talented Democrats up and down the ballot. That’s the kind of leadership our party needs to defeat Donald Trump and get our country back on track.”

Eric Van Lancker, Clinton County Auditor

“If Democrats are going to win back the White House and other places we’ve lost, there is no candidate better than Montana Governor Steve Bullock. In a state as red as Montana, he’s brought Democrats and Republicans together to safeguard our democratic rights, clean up our campaign finance system, and ensure that a fair shot at success is not a privilege for the few, but a right for everyone.”

Staci Appel, former Iowa Senate Assistant Majority Leader representing Warren County

“Donald Trump has put the foundation of our country at stake, and our Democratic nominee must have the strength of character to put our nation back on track. That’s why I’m proud to endorse Steve Bullock. After listening to all of the candidates, Steve stood far and above the rest as a clear leader to protect and defend the integrity of our democracy. I look forward to sharing that vision over the next four months as we head into the Caucus.”

Don Ruby, former Warren County Democratic Party Chair

“I’m endorsing Governor Steve Bullock because he’s proven he can make our progressive goals a reality. Communities are bearing the brunt of inaction from Washington, with special interests pouring money into our politics to halt progress even before it begins. As a Governor who knows how to get things done, Steve will bring about the systemic change we need — not years down the line, but right now.”

Endorsement: Iowa State Rep. Bruce Bearinger, Webster County Supervisor Mark Campbell Endorse Governor Bullock

New Iowa Endorsements Add to Growing List of Rural and Swing-County Democratic Leaders Supporting Governor Bullock

Des Moines, IA – Today, Governor Bullock announced the addition of four new endorsements, predominantly from Iowa swing-counties: Fayette County State Representative Bruce Bearinger, Webster County Supervisor Mark Campbell, Jasper County activist Laura Engel, and Madison County farmer Dan Ryner.

The endorsements come ahead of Governor Bullock’s “State House to the White House” Town Hall Tour, traveling to Iowa counties that went from Obama to Trump in 2016 with a focus on electing Democrats up and down the ticket in 2020. Fayette, Webster, and Jasper Counties flipped from Obama to Trump by an average of 28% in 2016.

With more than 150 days until the Iowa Caucus, enthusiasm continues to build around Governor Bullock being the candidate who can beat Donald Trump and ensure that Iowa’s concerns are met with action in Washington. Governor Bullock now has the endorsement of 12 prominent Iowa Democrats -- including Attorney General Tom Miller and DNC Member Jan Bauer.

Montana Governor Steve Bullock:
“This election is about bringing Americans together to create a government that will ensure everyone has a fair shot — no matter where you’re from or who you vote for. I’m proud to have support from Democrats who are leading the fight to restore a voice to the places that Republicans in the Iowa State Capitol and Washington have left behind.”
Bruce Bearinger, four-term State Representative for House District 64 (Fayette County), former high school teacher, and former Education Director for Iowa State Extension in Buchanan:
“Steve Bullock is the voice we need fighting for rural Iowa. As the Governor of a rural state who lives in the same small town where he grew up, Steve understands the unique hardships we face — in our schools, hospitals, and farms. And working with a legislature more Republican than our own, he’s proven he can bring those priorities across the finish line. I’m proud to endorse Steve’s campaign for President, because I know his work for our communities begins on Day One.”
Mark Campbell, Chair of the Webster County Board of Supervisors and small business owner:
“Too often, politicians have walked away from rural and small communities like mine — but not Governor Bullock. Steve campaigns where others will not, and he connects with voters in a way that others cannot. That’s precisely the character we need leading our Democratic Party. Steve has earned my support, because he is the candidate who will win back the places Democrats have lost and make sure the needs of rural and small-town Iowa are never forgotten.”
Laura Engle, Jasper County activist:
“If we don’t have a nominee who can win back places that Democrats have lost, Donald Trump is going to be reelected. That’s why I’m endorsing Governor Steve Bullock. In a state Trump won by 20%, Steve’s won statewide three times, elected by both the Democratic base and some Trump voters with a message that he’ll fight for everyone. That’s the leadership that will elect Democrats spanning from the State House to the White House in 2020.”
Dan Ryner, Madison County crop and livestock farmer:
“I’m endorsing Governor Bullock because he’s the candidate that speaks for rural communities. He has the agricultural experience and executive leadership to end this trade war, and he appeals across the political spectrum by focusing on common sense solutions that bring Americans together. Rural America needs him as our next President.”

DES MOINES, IA – Following Montana Governor Steve Bullock’s strong debate performance, today six Iowa Democratic leaders announced their endorsement of his campaign for president. The endorsements span across west, central, and eastern Iowa and include current and former elected officials, local party leaders, and prominent Democratic activists.

“Word is getting out that Governor Bullock has what it takes to beat Donald Trump and make government work again. Governor Bullock’s growing list of statewide endorsements are a testament to the vision he laid out on the debate stage: ensuring a fair shot for all Americans, including places like Iowa that Washington has left behind,” said Megan Simpson, Iowa State Director. “As the only candidate who has won a Trump state, Governor Bullock’s career is defined by working together to get progressive things done. We’re thrilled to welcome these leaders to Team Bullock as we fight to ensure every Iowan gets a fair shot at a better life.”

These supporters join two leading Iowa Democrats who previously endorsed Governor Bullock: Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller and Iowa DNC Member and former 22-year Story County Chair Jan Bauer.

Governor Bullock’s new Iowa endorsements include:

  • Dave Muhlbauer, Denison: Crawford County Supervisor, Iowa State Association of Counties Region 3 President, and farmer
  • Bill Gannon, Mingo: Former Three-Term State Representative and House Minority Floor Leader, former Democratic candidate for governor, and owner/operator of a century farm
  • Suzette Jensen, Des Moines: East Des Moines Democrats Co-Chair and former six-year Des Moines School Board Member

From Supervisor Dave Muhlbauer: “We need a leader who can restore a sense of unity and hope to our nation. For that ‒ and so much more ‒ I’m proud to endorse Steve Bullock for President. From international markets to mainstreet Iowa, Governor Bullock will break the status quo of going-it-alone, and replace it with getting things done together. As a farmer, a rural County Supervisor, and a father, I know I can trust Governor Bullock to lead us back on course to ensure that no matter where you live, everyone has a shot to be successful.”

From Former House Minority Floor Leader Bill Gannon: “Simply put: As President, Governor Bullock will get the job done. I believe that with the right leadership, government can be an agent for good that lifts up every American. Governor Bullock’s shown that in even the most divisive of times, he can forge solutions to achieve needed progress.  I’m proud to support him at every step along the way.”

From East Des Moines Democrats Co-Chair Suzette Jensen: "For too long, our government has not worked for Americans. Corporate dark money and special interests have dominated Washington's decision-making. This has left parts of our country behind. Governor Bullock has demonstrated that he has the ability to make changes that serve the needs of people over corporate interests. He was the only candidate to actually take a strong stand against Citizens United and has fought and won against dark money in Montana. I’ve been impressed with his accomplishments from expanded access to healthcare to making college more affordable. I am supporting Governor Bullock because he is the leader we need in Washington."
