Sample Crowded with Ads from 13 Different Groups

The sample had political ads from 13 different groups.  It contained 39 ads totaling 18m40s of which 24 were political ads totaling 13m30s; of those 11 were on the presidential campaign totaling 7m0s.  Thus 61.5% of the ads were political and 72.3% of the ad time was political; 28.2% of the ads were presidential and 37.5% of the ad time was presidential.

From the presidential race the sample included eight Democratic ads totaling 4m30s—5 Biden ads (3m0s) and 3 outside group ads (1m30s); by comparison there were three Republican ads totaling 2m30s—2 Trump ads (2m0s) and 1 outside group ad (0m30s).  These numbers are in line with the many news reports that state the Biden campaign is significantly outspending the Trump campaign.  Note that it is not just the number of ads but the variety; viewers saw five different ads from the Biden campaign compared to just the one from the Trump campaign.  The Republican side did include the most distinctive ad, a melodramatic law and order spot from Moms for Safe Neighborhoods.

The sample included nine ads from congressional races and two from the U.S. Senate race.  Rounding out the political ads were one from neighboring Wisconsin and one from the MN Secretary of State.
