Bob Kerrey learned about courage when a grenade exploded at his feet in Vietnam. He endured the pain, kept his command and won the fight. His wounds caused the amputation of his right leg. For his bravery, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
"I spent nine months in a VA hospital bed where a system of health insurance for veterans saved my life and taught me to walk again. But today, America suffers from a sick health care system. That's why I'm fighting so hard for national health insurance. The Kerrey Plan will reduce the average family's health care costs by over $500 per year...And guarantee coverage, even if you lose your job."

Returning home to Nebraska, Kerrey and his family started a restaurant from scratch. One year later, it was leveled by a tornado. Fighting back, overcoming the destruction and a stagnant economy, Kerrey built a major chain of restaurants and health clubs—today they employ over 900 people.
"We have been betrayed by politicians who are afraid to fight for American jobs. George Bush's answer is to beg concessions from Japan. When I'm President, America won't beg—we'll beat the competition. My national industrial policy will restore American economic superiority in the world. I'll protect jobs from unfair trade practices and push businesses to invest in America again. And I'll redirect resources to training, education, and research and development programs at home."
LEADERSHIP TAKES COURAGE
In 1982, Bob Kerrey ran as an outsider candidate for Goverrnor of Nebraska against a Republican incumbent. The state was buried in the worst farm depression in 50 years. But Governor Kerrey turned a $25 million deficit into a $49 million surplus. His leadership helped people back on their feet. Six years later, proud Nebraskans seent Bob Kerrey to fight for them in the U.S. Senate.
"It's time to cut the fat out of the federal government. As President, I'll slash the bureaucracy by 25% and chop the waste out of the bloated federal budget. And I'll fight for a middle-class tax cut to restore fairness...and spark the economy back to life. A leaner government will create more jobs and resources for health and education. That's the kind of tough, gutsy leadership it's going to take to make this country great again."
