Who he is...

Albert Gore Jr. is a United States Senator from Tennessee. He and his wife Tipper have four children: Karenna, 13, Kristin, 10, Sarah, 8, and Albert, 4.
Al was raised in Carthage, Tennessee, and in Washington, D.C., where his father served in the U.S. Senate. He earned a scholarship at Harvard, and graduated with honors in 1969. He then volunteered for the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. After returning home to civilian life in Tennessee, he worked as a newspaper reporter for the Tennessean, and studied theology and law at Vanderbilt University. He and
Tipper also started a small homebuilding business in Carthage.
He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1976.
In 1984, he was elected to the Senate with more votes than any other candidate in Tennessee history.
Tipper Gore is an author and a leading advocate for family values. When the Senate is not in session, the family lives on a small livestock farm near Carthage.

What he's saying...

On Education: ''America can compete for the future by giving our children the best schools on earth. We need to make classrooms smaller, make the school year longer and pay teachers more in return."

On The Economy: "We can restore economic growth by getting back to basics—rebuilding our manufacturing base, straightening out our fiscal policy, and providing working Americans the training and skills they need to get ahead."

On Farming: ''The Administration's farm policies are forcing many families to give up on farming. As a farmer, I know that we must act now to preserve our family farms. We should start by doubling the conservation reserve and focusing on rural economic development."

On Trade: "A President must demand the removal of unfair trade barriers overseas, insisting on action rather than promises, and moving us not toward protectionism but a more open trading environment—particularly in foreign countries. We need a President who will also address factors at home that can improve our ability to compete."

On Our Future: "Many Americans are worried about this country's future. But that future is ours to make—with our hands, with our minds, with our dreams, and with each other. Together we can give our children and grandchildren what all Americans deserve—a future with hope."

What others say...

''Al Gore of Tennessee ... may be the most promising young man in the Senate."
James Reston,
The New York Times

"Few in Congress can match his ability to seize an issue, uncover a pattern of abuses ... and propose a solution."
Politics in America 1984

"Gore has an educated earnestness ... An accomplished politician (who can) distinguish himself from a large and growing field."
George Will,
Columnist

"Gore ... is universally perceived as the Democrats' rising star. Young, smart and articulate, he's accomplished what few politicians ever achieve: he's simultaneously a standout for his intellectual contributions in Washington, and intimately in touch with the homefolks in Tennessee."
Reid Ashe,
Jackson (Tenn) Sun

"If presidential candidates could be custom-built ... there is one Southern politician who matches the blueprint in every detail: the relatively unknown freshman senator from Tennessee, Albert Gore."
Newsweek

"He has won national recognition for his ability, extraordinary hard work, and the thoroughness, and care with which he deals with the issues facing the nation ... (Gore has) the rare qualities of mature intelligence, careful research, integrity unswayed by selfish interest and a genuine concern for the public welfare."
Athens Clay Pullias,
Nashville Tennessean

"Not only is Gore extraordinarily well-informed on issues both long-standing and emerging; not only does he have a finger on the pulse of the people, but he also exhibits commendable philosophy regarding the role of government ... He believes in taking up for the ordinary citizen, the so called 'little man,' when the enormous tides of bigness threaten to overwhelm him."
Cookeville (Tenn)
Herald Citizen

"Gore is the '88 dark horse to bet the rent money on."
 Sandy Grady,
Knight-Ridder newspapers

Senator Al Gore of Tennessee

Why Al Gore should be President...

His background, his intelligence, his accomplishments, his understanding of the future, his service in Vietnam, his record as a Southern leader—all these are reasons people give why Al Gore should be our next President

But Presidents are more than the sum of their experiences. People have learned the hard way to ask, "Yes, but what's he really stand for?"

Al Gore stands for putting the public interest first, for having the courage to tell the truth and make the hard choices, for standing up and fighting for the average voter.

When Al Gore stood up to powerful interests in the House and Senate, he didn't ask whether it was a good idea for Republicans or Democrats, liberals or conservatives. He asked, is it right for America?

In his campaign for President, he's demonstrating the same courage and independence—refusing to go along with protectionism even though it's popular, refusing to favor misguided policies even though powerful interests push for them.

The stakes for America in this election are greater than ever. We need a President willing to face the tough choices.

We need a leader. We need Al Gore.
