Vote To Save The Coast.

End the Bush - Watt - Hodel
Assault On California's Environment.

"Clean air, safe water, beautiful parks, healthy oceans - these are goals all Americans share. For the sake of ourselves, our children, and generations to come, we must protect our natural heritage."

Give Top Priority To Our Environment.

Since the day George Bush took office, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been turned into a bottomless pit of corruption and mismanagement.
It's time to stop coddling polluters, and to start cleaning up our water, our air and our oceans.
The Dukakis/Bentsen team will raise the EPA to cabinet-level status, giving it the power to lower the boom on polluters. It's Mike Dukakis' way of putting the full power of the Presidency to work in protecting our environment.

Preserve The California Coast.

California's coast is our most beloved recreational and scenic asset, and supports a tourism and fishing economy worth over $10 billion annually.
For the past eight years, it has been under continual assault by George Bush, Jim Watt and Don Hodel. Mike Dukakis will stop them from sacrificing this irreplaceable heritage to Big Oil.

DUKAKIS
BUSH
• Successfully fought for ten years to block oil drilling in the fishery rich George's Bank off New England.

• Vows to permanently preserve by Presidential decree almost 2/3 of the California coast and Marine Sanctuaries, including Santa Monica Bay and the entire
stretch from Big Sur to the Oregon border.

• Will cancel the oil lease sale off the Southern California coast and work to determine which additional areas should be pre served as Marine Sanctuaries.

• Founded the company that pioneered offshore oil drilling. He has consistently supported an aggressive offshore development plan.

• Bush's energy position paper in the 1988 primary summed up his life-long philosophy: "We should lease the Outer Continental Shelf for oil drilling."

• On October 4, 1988, Bush again stated that he generally favors offshore drilling, except in "hypersensitive" areas.

WITH MIKE DUKAKIS AS PRESIDENT, WE WILL ONCE AGAIN SPEND OUR TIME ENJOYING OUR SPLENDID COAST – INSTEAD OF FIGHTING OVER IT.

Crack Down On Toxic Polluters.
• Mike Dukakis passed one of the nation's most effective state Superfund laws, requiring polluters to pay more than 80% of clean-up costs.

• Supported a citizen initiative setting deadlines and tough standards for toxic cleanups.

• As head of a "Regulatory Relief' task force, Bush announced a freeze on the entire system of controlling hazardous wastes.

• In the past eight years, only 36 of the 1177 most dangerous federal toxic waste sites have been cleaned up.

AS PRESIDENT, MIKE DUKAKIS WILL LAUNCH A CLEAN-UP AT EVERY ONE OF THE 1177 FEDERAL SUPERFUND SITES.

Preserve Our Precious Public Lands.
Mike Dukakis will change George Bush's approach of opting for exploitation over conservation of our nation's public lands and waters. This will preserve fish, wildlife, and thousands of recreational opportunities.
• Mike enacted the largest State open-space acquisition in the country with a $500 million bond act.

• Will require the Forest Service to develop special provisions for the protection of old-growth forests.

• Bush praised Interior Secretary James Watt as "doing an excellent job" even as Watt sought to open up federal lands for exploitation.

• Continues to support "below-cost" timber sales in which the taxpayers subsidize the destruction of old-growth forest.

MIKE DUKAKIS WILL END THE BUSH-WATT GIVEAWAY OF PUBLIC LANDS, AND WILL PROTECT OUR NATIONAL FOREST, EXPAND OUR NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM, AND PRESERVE OUR FISH AND WILDLIFE RESOURCES.

George Bush has led the assault on our environment.

As Chairman of the President's Commission on Regulatory Relief, Bush was the point man in stalling, relaxing or rescinding hundreds of environmental regulations.

• Bush blocked efforts to reduce lead in the air — which is particularly harmful to children.

• Bush put a freeze on the entire system of controlling hazardous wastes.

• Bush fought to block funds for the Superfund program designed to clean up toxic waste dumps.

• Bush twice supported the Administration's veto of the Clean Water Act.

• He lobbied Congress for changes that would have virtually wiped out the Clean Air Act.

"The health of our planet and the quality of life for my grandchildren and future generations is much more important than loyalty to any political party."
