NEW HAMPSHIRE UPDATE

Babbitt campaign manager Mike Muir (603-226-2000) reports the following progress in New Hampshire, site of the first presidential primary on Feb. 16, 1988:

• Governor Babbitt's spunky staff in New Hampshire scored the biggest tactical upset yet in campaign '88 by finishing third in balloting for delegates to the New Hampshire State Democratic Convention to be held on Nov. 21. In addition to the efforts of Governor Michael Dukakis and Representative Richard Gephardt, "the other campalgn which has attalned that 'comfort level' of familiarity in New Hampshire is Babbitt's," as vetaran political writer David Broder reported in The Washington Post.

• The skirmishing over convention delegates is considered one early measure of the organizational strength of each candidate. The state convention on Nov. 21 will be the last major showcase for the Democratic candidates before the holiday season.

• The latest delegate election tally, as compiled from news accounts and tracking by Babbitt's New Hampshire staff, follows:

• After his showing in the delegate caucuses, Babbitt picked up key endorsements this week from the following: State Rep. Steve Cahill; Ellen Healy, past president of the Manchester Education Association; Bill Franks, Tilton-area activist and two-time Democratic candidate for state senate; Susan Palmer-Terry, director of the Concord Office of Health Services Planning; Kevin Flynn, Democratic activist in Rochester; Kathy Spohn, community mental health specialist from Salem; Bob Clay, community leader and former elected official from Plymouth.

• The Babbitt New Hampshire staff has launched what is believed to be the flrst-ever electronic direct mail campaign by sending an eight-minute videotape of campaign speeches, commericals, and debate appearances by Babbitt to over 475 New Hampshire party activists who will play central roles in get-out-the-vote drives for the February primary. Muir reports that the tape is gaining Babbitt attention from local party leaders and news organizations and, based on initial calls, at least several converts to the Babbitt cause. The Washington Post reported on the proliferation of videotechnology earlier this week, citing the Babbitt videotape as an example.

• Governor Babbitt will pick up endorsements from several key New Hampshire environmentalists Sunday following a debate on the environment to be sponsored by leading New Hampshire environmental groups. Joining the Babbitt team will be: Dan Burnham of the Monadnock region; Robert Norman of the Upper Valley; Charlton MacVeagh of the Trust fer New Hampshire Lands; and Tom Deans, a leading New England environmentalist. AII four are active in New Hampshire conservation and environmental organizations.
