U.S. Rep. Luis V.
Gutiérrez (D-IL), long a champion of immigrant rights, announced
on Nov. 28 that he will not seek re-election in 2018 after serving 12
terms. In his announcement Gutiérrez said he will not be
retiring, but will be "travel the country meeting with immigration
groups," leading to a splash of reports that he might run for president
in 2020. For example, the Chicago
Sun-Times' Mark Brown, led his report writing, "Rep. Luis
Gutierrez is planning to lay the groundwork for a run for president in
2020."
