Current representation of women in the House is astoundingly low. According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the United States places 102nd out of 188 nations in terms of the proportion of women serving in the lower chamber (+). As of mid-2018, only 84 (61D, 23R) of 428* Members of the U.S. House are women ...19.6%. The percentages by party are Democrats 31.6% (61 of 193) and Republicans 9.8% (23 of 235). Voters in some states have done a better job than others of electing women to Congress; for example 17 of 53 Members of the California House delegation are women, eight of 27 from New York, seven of 27 from Florida, and two of two from New Hampshire. None of the 18 House Members from Pennsylvania is a woman, and only one of 14 from Georgia is a woman.
Of the 476 women who filed, almost three times as many were Democrats as Republicans (356D, 120R). While there are only three more primaries yet to be held, as of Sept. 5 CAWP reported 230 women (179D, 51R) have already won primaries, while 234 women (157D, 67R) have lost primaries, and 22 (20D, 2R) are yet to face the voters. 2018 has easily surpassed the 2016 record of 167 major party woman candidates on the November ballot.* Three of the four incumbents who were defeated in primaries—Reps. Mark Sanford (R-SC), Joe Crowley (D-NY), and Mike Capuano (D-MA), all veteran politicians—lost to women candidates. One of the significant outcomes following the Nov. 2018 elections could well be a jump in the proportion of women serving in Congress, similar to what happened following the 1992 elections (+).
*Keep in mind that there are also many third party and independent woman candidates running for House.
