 WY Secretary of State

Notes:
U.S. Sen. John Barrasso (R) was easily re-elected in this solidly Republican state.  The last Democrat elected to the Senate from Wyoming was Gale McGee, who was defeated in his 1976 re-election bid, while in the House U.S. Rep. Teno Roncalio (D) opted not to seek re-election in 1978.  In 2016 Clinton had her worst showing of any state in Wyoming and Trump carried the state by 46.29 percentage points.

Barrasso is an orthopedic surgeon who previously served in the state Senate (2002-07).  He was appointed to fill the seat in June 2007, following the death of Sen. Craig Thomas, was elected to fill out the term in a 2008 special election, and was re-elected in 2012.  He is part of the Republican leadership in the Senate, having chaired the Republican Policy Committee since 2012.

Barrasso fended off several primary challengers, most notably Dave Dodson, a businessman from Jackson Hole.  In Feb. 2018 Dodson launched an independent campaign for Senate, saying he was willing to spend $1 million, part of the Unite America effort; however in June he registered to run as a Republican and finished a distant second in the Aug. 21 primary.

The Democratic candidate was Gary Trauner, a businessman whose experience includes co-founder and CFO of OneWest.net, COO of St. John's Medical Center, and co-founder of a dog food company.  Trauner was the Democratic nominee for Wyoming's at-large U.S. House seat in 2006 and 2008.

The two major candidates participated in just one debate, on Oct. 25, at Sheridan College, hosted by Wyoming PBS and the Sheridan Press (>).
