 WA Secretary of State

Notes:
Sen. Maria Cantwell (D) had little difficulty in winning a fourth term.  Of the twenty-nine candidates on the Aug. 7 top two primary ballot, Cantwell finished first with 54.68% of the vote followed by Susan Hutchison (R) at 24.3%.  Hutchison is a former KIRO-TV news anchor who ran for King County Executive in 2009 finishing second, and who served as chair of the state Republican Party from 2013-18.
The two candidates debated twice: on Oct. 8 at Pacific Lutheran University near Tacoma (>) and on Oct. 20, hosted by the Washington State Debate Coalition, at Spokane Community College (>).  This race was very lopsided financially; according to Open Secrets, the Cantwell campaign spent $11.6 million compared to $1.9 million for the Hutchison campaign (>).
