 Lt. Governor-Elections

Notes:  Sen. Orrin Hatch (R), 84, was first elected in 1976; he announced on Jan. 2, 2018 that he would not seek an eighth term.

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor (2003-07) and 2012 Republican presidential nominee, was seen as a virtual lock to claim the seat.  After
finishing a close second to state Rep. Mike Kennedy at the Utah Republican Nominating Convention on April 21, Mitt Romney trounced Kennedy in the June 26 primary by 71.7% to 28.3%.  Jenny Wilson, an at-large member of the Salt Lake County Council, was the Democratic candidate, initially seeking to challenge Hatch.  Three other candidates were on the Nov. 6 ballot.

The two major party candidates participated in a debate on Oct. 9 sponsored by the Utah Debate Commission at Southern Utah University in Cedar City (1, 2).

Romney was in such a solid position that he took time to campaign for Martha McSally in neighboring Arizona, rallying with her in Gilbert on Oct. 12.
