 MN Secretary of State

Notes:
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (DFL), first, elected in 2006, was very well positioned to win a third term.  Her main opponent was state Rep. Jim Newberger (R), an EMT/paramedic; also on the ballot were Paula Overby (G) and Dennis Schuller (LM).

The Aug. 15 primaries were not competitive.  Newberger won 69.50% of the vote, defeating Merrill Anderson (15.69%), Rae Hart Anderson (8.93%) and multi-state gadfly candidate Rocky De La Fuente (5.88%).  Klobuchar won 95.70% of the vote in the DFL primary.

Klobuchar has been mentioned as a possible 2020 presidential candidate, but unlike several other White House prospects she kept a fairly low profile nationally, not travelling around and doing a lot of events around the country.

Klobuchar and Newberger debated on Aug. 24 at the State Fair (+), and on Oct. 21 on KSTP-TV (+).  In a statement headlined, "A Historic Minnesota Election Year With Historically Few Debates," KSTP noted that Klobuchar had "initially declined our invitation (+)."

The race was extremely lopsided financially.  Open Secrets reported that from 2013-18 the Klobuchar campaign raised $10.6 million, spent $8.9 million and finished with cash on hand of $4.4 million; by comparison during the course of his campaign Newberger raised $257,714, spent $249,709 and finished with cash on hand of $8,004 (+).
