Strengthening Michigan's Economy

Debbie's building a stronger Michigan economy to help workers get better skills, better jobs, and better wages.
•    She knows small businesses are the backbone of Michigan's economy and was awarded the 2017 Small Business Council of America Special Congressional Achievement Award
•    Her jobs plan strengthens and diversifies our economy by supporting manufacturing and technology, agriculture, training, small business creation, and education

Protecting Our Great Lakes
Debbie knows that protecting the Great Lakes is vital to our economy and our Michigan way of life. As Senator:
•    The first law she ever passed banned oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes
•    She passed the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and fought to fully fund it
•    She authored the Stop Invasive Species Act to stop the spread of Asian carp and other invasive species

Keeping the Promise to Veterans
Our veterans shouldn't wait at the back of any line. Debbie knows how important it is to keep our promises to our heroes who haye served. Debbie has:
•    Opened new or expanded V.A. clinics in Alpena, Bad Axe, Cadillac, Clare, Cheboygan County, Grayling, Oscoda, Traverse City, and Wyoming
•    Authored legislation to protect funding for veterans' health

Improving Health care and Lowering Costs
Debbie believes health care is a basic human right. She's fought for that right by:
•    Protecting coverage for people with pre-existing conditions
•    Authoring legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs
•    Authoring legislation to allow more people to buy into Medicare and a bill that cuts taxes for small businesses to provide health coverage to their employees
•    Leading the successful effort to increase funding for community health centers and for the Children's Health Insurance Program (MIChild)

Standing Up for Social Security and Medicare

Debbie knows Michiganders should be able to count on Social Security and Medicare when we retire. Debbie:
•    Will stop efforts to cut or privatize Social Security and Medicare and ensure these programs remain solvent
•    Worked across the aisle to make sure Medicare better supports Alzheimer's patients

Championing Michigan Agriculture
Debbie knows that when we grow things in Michigan, we create jobs in Michigan. That's why Debbie:
•    Authored the bipartisan 2014 Farm Bill
•    Coauthored the bipartisan 2018 Farm Bill, which:
•    Supports beginning farmers, veterans, and urban agriculture
•    Strengthens risk management tools and conseNation programs
•    Provides critical improvements for dairy and specialty crops

MADE IN MICHIGAN
 
She was born in Gladwin and raised in Clare, where her family ran the local Oldsmobile dealership and her mom worked as a nurse. She was active in her church and community and learned the value of hard work at an early age.
