Tim and Gwen live in Mankato with their two children, Hope and Gus. Before his remarkable election to Congress in 2006, Tim was an award-winning teacher and football coach. Tim served our country for 24 years in the Army National Guard and is the highest-ranking enlisted service member ever to serve in Congress.

Tim Walz is the second Democrat in 125 years to win in Southern
Minnesota's Congressional District. He's done it because he's able to
carry a progressive message to Minnesotans of all walks of life.
Tim has stood up for our progressive values, and he's done it in a district that is far from safe for progressives.

■ Always supported marriage equality -
Tim has always been a champion for the LGBT community. He formed the
first Gay-Straight Alliance at Mankato West High School in the 1990s,
and has always been in favor of full marriage equality.
■ Takes a stand against climate change and for our environment - Tim voted in favor of Cap and Trade Legislation, even though he knew it might cost him his seat in Congress. Tim received a 97% rating from the League of Conservation Voters.
■ Defending a woman's right to choose - Tim has a 100% lifetime rating with Planned Parenthood and has always stood up for a woman's right to choose.
■ Keeping families safe from gun violence - In Congress, Tim has voted for Universal Background Checks, "No Fly, No Buy" legislation, and CDC funding for gun violence research. He also co-sponsored the bill to ban bump stocks, voted against concealed carry reciprocity legislation, and is a co-sponsor of the assault weapons ban.
■ Supporting criminal justice reform - Tim believes in creating a system of taxation and regulation for adult-use marijuana. The current system of prohibition has resulted in the disproportionate incarceration of people of color. He also believes that private prisons are inherently wrong and should not be allowed in Minnesota.
■ Fighting for working people - As a longtime member of Education Minnesota and steadfast supporter of organized labor, Tim knows that a strong economy depends on a strong labor movement.
■ Universal health care - Tim believes that universal, affordable health care is a human right, and supports putting Minnesota on a path to single payer. Tim voted for the Affordable Care Act while representing a Republican district. He supports a MinnesotaCare buy-in as the first step toward universal health care.
