Sen. Barbara Boxer (D)'s retirement created an open seat.  Two Democrats emerged from the June 7 top-two primary.  Backed by much of the Democratic establishment, Attorney General Kamala Harris (D) easily defeated Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D). 
The FEC reported for 2015-16 the Harris campaign made total disbursements of $14.8 million compared to $4.5 million for Sanchez's campaign (>).
