Richard Shelby (R), age 82, who was first elected in 1986 as a Democrat and switched to the Republican party in 1994, handily defeated Ron Crumpton (D), executive director of The Alabama Patients' Rights Coalition and The Alabama Safe Access Project. The Shelby campaign reported disbursements of $11.5 million including for its relatively noncompetitive primary compared to total disbursements of $32,369 for the Crumpton campaign (+). |
