Notes: Sen. Lisa Murkowski, appointed to the Senate in Dec. 2002 by her father after he was elected governor, and elected in 2004 and 2010, won re-election by a comfortable margin. In the primary she defeated three challengers with 71.52% of the vote. In the general election her most formidable opponent was Joe Miller. Miller, making his third run for Senate, entered the race in Sept. 2016 as a Libertarian after the winner of the Libertarian primary stepped aside. (In 2010 Miller defeated Murkowski in the Aug. 24 Republican primary, but she ran a write-in campaign in the general election and won. In 2014 he lost the Aug. 19 Republican primary to former Alaska Attorney General and Commissioner of Natural Resources Dan Sullivan). The 2016 Democratic nominee, Ray Metcalfe, a former Republican state rep. and founder of the Republican Moderate Party, did not run much of a campaign. Indeed former Sen. Mark Begich (D) endorsed the independent candidate Margaret Stock, who was also endorsed by The Centrist Project. The FEC reported for 2015-16 the Murkowski campaign made total disbursements of $7.0 million compared to $742,959 for Stock, $411,184 for Miller and $14,186 for Metcalfe (>).
