ICYMI: National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) Endorses Joe Biden for President

Today, the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) endorsed Joe Biden for President of the United States. NTEU, the nation's largest independent union of federal employees, pointed to Biden’s strong record as a public servant and his dedication to civil service as an indication of his respect for federal employees.

"I am proud to have the endorsement of the National Treasury Employees Union. Federal employees are some of the most talented, hard-working, and inspiring people I have ever met, worthy of the utmost dignity and respect,” said Vice President Joe Biden. “As President, I’ll ensure the federal government serves as a model for employers to treat their workers fairly. I’ll restore worker’s rights to organize and bargain collectively, making sure they have a voice in the workplace, work to provide consistent and regular pay increases, and hold the line to protect their benefits."

NTEU issued the following press release:

Washington D.C. – The National Treasury Employees Union has endorsed Joe Biden for President of the United States.

The union, which represents about 150,000 frontline federal workers around the country, said Biden’s record as a public servant demonstrates a deep understanding of the civil service and a strong commitment to supporting and respecting federal employees.

“Joe Biden is exactly who federal employees need in the White House,” said NTEU National President Tony Reardon. “Throughout his career, Joe Biden has been an advocate of fair pay and benefits and giving frontline employees a meaningful voice in the federal workplace. As President, he would be a powerful advocate for providing federal agencies and employees with the resources they need to carry out their missions, including national security, public health, environmental protection, economic growth and consumer safety.”

Local and national NTEU leaders evaluated each candidate solely on issues affecting federal workers, including pay, benefits, agency funding, collective bargaining, workplace rights and engagement with NTEU on the union’s key issues.

“In the end, this was an easy decision for our NTEU leaders in every state and territory. Federal employees want a president who honors their service, pays them a fair wage and respects their integrity and professionalism. Joe Biden is the only choice,” Reardon said.

Biden has committed to making the federal government a role model for employers to treat their workers fairly, and he wants federal employees to be protected and rewarded for their hard work. He has spoken publicly about respecting and relying upon the expertise of career civil servants.

The three executive orders that President Trump signed in 2018 were a brazen attack on federal employees and their right to be represented by a union, and they violate the congressional finding that collective bargaining in the federal sector is in the public interest.

“Vice President Biden told me personally that he would rescind the federal workforce executive orders, which is the clearest possible example of how a Biden presidency would immediately improve the professional lives of federal employees,” Reardon said.

NTEU’s endorsement process includes an independent examination of each candidates’ record on federal employee issues; public statements; and input from local union leaders.

“No matter what agency they work for, we found NTEU leaders overwhelmingly support Joe Biden for president,” Reardon said. “These are the federal employees who voluntarily take on extra union duties, and they have dealt first-hand with the Trump administration’s workforce policies. Their support of Joe Biden means they are ready for a change in how the White House treats the federal workforce.”

National unions representing a range of other workers and professions have also endorsed Biden, including AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Pride at Work, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART), the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS), Communications Workers of America, (CWA), American Postal Workers Union (APWU), the United Steelworkers Union (USW), Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers' International Union (BCTGM), Transportation Trades Department (TTD), International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC), United Farm Workers (UFW), Transport Workers Union (TWU), International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots (MM&P) and the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA), International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), United Auto Workers (UAW), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), National Education Association (NEA), International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers (IW), Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Operative Plasterers’ & Cement Masons’ International Association (OPCMIA), International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), American Train Dispatchers Association (ADTA) and Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU).
