ACLU Highlights Rights For All Activists at Netroots Nation

Rights For All mobilizes activists in early states to move the presidential field on civil liberties issues, and get commitments on civil rights priorities from the candidates.  They’ve already had a real impact on the race:

·         A Rights For All volunteer’s question to Bernie Sanders about voting rights for those currently incarcerated generated a national conversation.

·         A rope-line interaction between our volunteer and Joe Biden resulted the former VP changing his decades-long held position on the Hyde Amendment and federal insurance coverage for abortion.

·         And months before Pete Buttigieg was getting widespread pressure on his commitment to racial and criminal justice, ACLU volunteers were getting the mayor on the record; In April, Buttigieg responded that he “want[ed] to do a little math on that,” when asked to pledge to a 50 percent cut—a far cry from the commitment we captured on video in June, now reflected in his Douglass plan.

Our volunteers are aiming to get some of these major commitments on the record at Netroots this weekend...

ACLU Rights For All Volunteers: Netroots 2019

  • Stephanie Alvendia, Nevada, is based in Las Vegas after moving here 3 years ago from the Chicago suburbs. She's a CPA turned activist —  she had never done anything political in my life until Oct. 1, 2017 when I joined an ACLUPeople Power group. I have been married for over 25 years to my wonderful husband who immigrated here from the Philippines, and has 3 grown multi-racial children. She's asked questions of:

  • Alden Hussey, New Hampshire, is from Concord. He's 20 years old, he wants to try to have a positive impact, and believes that what I and others do, asking tough questions of candidates, is important.

  • Denise Goldberg, Massachusetts, lives in North Andover. She's retired from the high tech industry and have been volunteering with People Power since last year. She is a volunteer at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and at a Trustees of Reservations property in North Andover. My passion is landscape and macro photography.

  • Judy McCoid, Washington, is from outside  Seattle. She is a retired teacher. She began texting with ACLU's People Power in March, 2017 and now am a lead, proofing and launching campaigns, assigning texts, answering questions, and monitoring new volunteers.

  • Marci Iacobucci, Illinois, has come to Netroots Nation from Chicago. By day, she's in advertising (a hybrid of creative director and strategist), by night (mornings and weekends) she's an activist.  Though there are many issues that demand our attention, she's focused on civil rights and civil liberties which is why she's involved with People Power ACLU.
