Super Tuesday March 3, 2020 Grid

This grid is intended as a starting point for considering how the campaigns were organized in the Super Tuesday states.

Three candidates exited the race just days before March 3. leaving only five active candidates, and only four with credible campaign organizations.  Bloomberg had by far the most extensive organization on the ground, with many dozens of staffers in key states.  Sanders had the strongest grassroots presence.  Warren had a fair organization in the Super Tuesday states and beyond, but her position was undercut by poorer than expected showings in the four early states, and it was seen as possible that she could even lose in her home state of Massachusetts.  Biden had a very thin organization on the ground, but endorsements, lots and lots of endorsements from current and former elected officials.

Keep in mind that ballots were set well in advance of Super Tuesday, so for example California voters found 20 names on the Democratic ballot.  Additionally note that early voting in some states has been going on for more than a month; it started in Minnesota on January 17.
A total of 1,357 delegates are at stake. or 34.1% of the 3,979 pledged delegates. There are also 771 automatic (unpledged) delegate votes [super delegates]. 1,991 delegates are needed to win.

*In several states, the secretary of state or election board does not do election night reporting of results. For example, in the Massachusetts Secretary of State's office notes, " Our state law does not require local election officials to report anything to us except official certified results, which they have 4 days to do. The AP has an agreement with our city and town clerks associations and they do collect unofficial results at the end of the night.  In Maine the Secretary of State has 20 days to report results and generally refers people to the Bangor Daily News.
