New Hampshire Endorsements
The 2020 Democratic presidential candidates and their campaigns looked for endorsements from federal, statewide and local elected officials as well as former elected officials and prominent figures. The New Hampshire State House, with 400 members, is the largest legislative chamber in the United States, affording plenty of opportunities to pick up endorsements. One hundred and seventy of the 233 Democratic House members (73.0%) publically endorsed candidates who were still active on primary day, Feb. 11. These endorsements did not prove to be a good indicator of the primary results; Warren, who had the most endorsements by House members finished fourth and Biden, who had the second most, finished fifth. In addition, ten of 14 state Senators (71.4%), two executive councilors and one member of Congress endorsed active candidates. (see also 2007-08)

Hunter Woodall and Will Weissert. "Low-tier candidates could threaten Sanders in New Hampshire." AP, Sept. 16, 2019. Although Rep. Peg Higgins signed on to Warren's Nov. 2019 letter, she did not make a public endorsement in the primary campaignn. (confirmed Feb. 11 phone conversation)

How good an indicator are state legislative endorsements? As the third largest legislature, the New Hampshire House is a very representative body. In the Jan. 8, 2008 Democratic primary 156 endorsements by Democratic state reps. were noted as of Dec. 27, 2007: Clinton 50 (32.1%), Obama 40 (25.6%), Edwards 32 (20.5%), Richardson 13, Dodd 11, Biden 8 and Kucinich 2 (details). This data is not complete as it misses the last 11 days before the primary. Also, Biden and Dodd dropped out after the Iowa caucuses and some of their endorsers may have gone for the remaining candidates. Additionally, Independent voters are an important voting group in New Hampshire. Despite these shortcomings, the endorsements tally does reflect the primary result: Clinton won the primary with 39.1% to 36.5% for Obama and 16.9% for Edwards.
