NV DEMS HIRE 2020 CAUCUS DIRECTOR

Today, the Nevada State Democratic Party announced the hire of Shelby Wiltz as 2020 Caucus Director ahead of Nevada’s First in the West Presidential Caucus. This is the earliest the State Party has brought on a Caucus Director in an election cycle.

“Shelby is incredibly talented and I am excited to see all she can accomplish as our Party works to make our 2020 caucuses more accessible and open,” said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II. “I witnessed Shelby’s hard work and dedication in 2018 as she helped orchestrate one of the most successful field programs in the country. Our organizing team, led by Shelby, executed a strong field program knocking more than one million doors. She was an integral part of our historic gains last cycle and she will help lead us down the path to success in 2020.”

“I am thrilled to continue working with the State Party after all of our achievements in 2018 and this time, helping to make sure we have our most successful caucus yet in 2020,” said Wiltz. “I know how much we can achieve when we engage with Democrats across this state and that’s exactly how we’re going to come together next year and select the Democratic nominee who will defeat Donald Trump.”

Shelby has been working to elect Democrats since 2013. She worked to organize volunteers, turn out voters and manage field programs on more than seven campaigns across the country. In 2018, Shelby moved to Nevada to become the Organizing Director for the State Party's Coordinated Campaign where she led the organizing effort that saw record turnout in a midterm year and elected a historic number of Democrats up and down the ticket.

From: Alana Mounce, Nevada State Democratic Party Executive Director
Date: November 14, 2019
Subject: NV Dems Preparing to Execute Successful First in the West Caucus

With just 100 days to go until our First in the West Caucus, NV Dems are working in every county and every community to lay the foundation to execute a successful caucus and set our future Democratic nominee on the path to defeat Donald Trump in 2020.

With the addition of four days of in-person early voting and multilingual caucus materials, NV Dems is on track to host the most accessible, expansive, and transparent caucus yet. Since summer, we have held more than 150 trainings, recruited more than 1,300 volunteers, contacted more than 23 thousand Nevada Democrats, and locked nearly 80 early vote locations.

Nevada plays a crucial role in the nominating process due to our strong diversity, high union membership, battleground state status and as the first Western state in the nominating calendar.

Drawing a strong contrast
As the first Western state to make its voice heard in the presidential primary, Nevada plays a pivotal role in deciding our nominee. As a majority-minority state with a nearly one-third Latinx population, Nevada’s electorate is much more reflective of the Democratic Party and the country as a whole. Additionally, Nevada is the first battleground state where candidates will compete, making the Silver State campaigns’ first true test of viability. Below is a breakdown of our unique diversity:

  • Nevada’s Latinx community makes up nearly one-third of our population
  • We are home to more than 13 thousand Dreamers and more than 4 thousand TPS recipients, many whom make up our workforce and union population
  • In Clark County, 1 in 4 residents speak Spanish at home
  • We are home to one of the fastest growing AAPI communities in the country
  • 14% of Nevadans are union members--the largest organized labor presence of any early state
  • Female-majorities in our federal delegation, Nevada Supreme Court, and we’re the first and only female-majority state legislature in the country
Recent polling in Nevada shows a close race among the top candidates with health care and climate change as top issues among Democrats when deciding on their choice for nominee.

Delegate breakdown:
Gaining more automatic delegates following the election of Governor Steve Sisolak and U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen, Nevada’s delegate count far exceeds New Hampshire and is now comparable to winning in Iowa.

Additionally, doing well in a diverse Western state is an indication of a candidate’s ability to win in the delegate-rich Western states voting just 10 days later on Super Tuesday like California and Texas.

  • Early states
    • Iowa- 49 total national delegates
    • New Hampshire- 33 total national delegates
    • Nevada - 48 total national delegates

  • Western states voting on Super Tuesday
    • California- 495 total national delegates
    • Texas- 262 total national delegates
    • Colorado- 80 total national delegates
    • Utah- 35 total national delegates

Make or break
Historically, Nevada has acted as a tiebreaker among Democratic presidential candidates. In 2008, Nevada was the deciding state after Barack Obama won Iowa and Hillary Clinton beat him in New Hampshire. And in 2016, Nevada became a tiebreaker after Clinton won Iowa and Bernie Sanders took New Hampshire. In both cases, Nevada broke for the eventual nominee.

Nevada also has a history of carrying the nominee into the general election, electing Barack Obama in 2008, again in 2012, and Hillary Clinton carried the state in 2016. Up and down the ballot, Nevada’s caucuses are the first step in securing the Silver State for the Democratic nominee, holding on to our majorities in the Assembly and Senate, and re-electing Dina Titus, Steven Horsford, and Susie Lee to the House of Representatives.

NV Dems Announce Delegate Selection Plan Approval

Today on a call with reporters, the Nevada State Democratic Party announced our delegate selection plan had been moved into full compliance by the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee.

On the call, DNC Chair Tom Perez and NV Dems Chair William McCurdy II discussed how the NV Dems team has been working diligently to put on the most expansive, accessible, and transparent caucus yet — while laying the groundwork to defeat Trump in the general election. As the First in the West and third in the nation contest, Nevada plays a crucial role in determining our party’s nominee. That’s why our party designed a caucus process that will expand access to all Nevadans. By offering four days of in-person early voting at nearly 80 locations across the state, as well as multilingual caucus materials and workplace caucus sites to accommodate our 24-hour workforce, the caucuses will be the most accessible Nevada contest in history.

Nevada Democrats also have a multilingual organizing team working in every county of the state since August 2019 preparing for the caucus while also building the infrastructure Democrats’ eventual nominee will need to win the state in 2020.

“I am so proud of the work NV Dems has accomplished on behalf of all Nevada Democrats,” said DNC Chair Tom Perez. “That hard work has resulted in the opportunity for unprecedented participation. The addition of early voting, multilingual preference cards, and training materials guarantees more Nevadans will have access to the caucus than ever before. These reforms will help lay the foundation to win in 2020, defeat Donald Trump, and build a more inclusive electorate.”

“The primary goal in crafting this plan was to ensure as many Nevada Democrats as possible are given the opportunity to make their voice heard, and I believe we will do that in 2020,” said NV Dems Chair William McCurdy II. “Nevada plays a critical role in the presidential primary and we take our role as an early state incredibly serious. I am grateful to have the support of the DNC and Chair Tom Perez as we make history in February and take back the White House next November.”

NV Dems Host Spanish-Language Caucus Trainings

Yesterday, NV Dems concluded two days of successful Spanish-language caucus trainings aimed at educating and turning out Democrats within Nevada’s Latinx community. After filling Tuesday evening’s training, NV Dems held an overflow training Wednesday evening. The State Party began hosting Spanish-language trainings in September.

As the first diverse early state, Nevada is much more reflective of the Democratic Party and the country compared to other early states. With a Latinx community that accounts for nearly one-third of our population, Nevada elevates Latinx voices and issues. NV Dems are proud to continue offering Spanish-language caucus materials in our 2020 caucus, in addition to English and Tagalog, to ensure as many Nevada Democrats as possible can participate in our most expansive caucus yet. With Latinx voters projected to make up the second-largest voting bloc in the country in 2020, their voices will be critical to continuing our historic Democratic gains of 2016 and 2018.

“We have fantastic diversity in Nevada and with 72 days to go before our First in the West Caucus, going into all of our communities and educating everyone on our new caucus process will be crucial to keeping Nevada blue in 2020,” said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II. “With an increased number of caucus sites, multilingual caucus materials, and introducing four days of early voting, NV Dems is creating every opportunity possible to ensure our Latinx community and all Nevada Democrats participate in our most expansive and accessible caucus yet.”

This training is one in a series of varying constituency-focused trainings in which NV Dems work to encourage participation across every community. Our party is excited to continue working with the African-American, LGBTQ+, Labor, Rural, and Youth voter communities as we continue our constituency-focused trainings later this year and in early 2020.

That’s why NV Dems have been working tirelessly to ensure our First in the West Caucus expands access to our workforce. As the early state with the highest union population, Nevada’s caucuses play an important role as the voice of working families. By continuing to expand access to our caucus to every community and every county, there’s no doubt Nevada will continue to be a bellwether for the direction of the country.”

NV Dems, Young Dems Host Caucus Trainings for College Students in Reno and Las Vegas

This week, NV Dems hosted constituency-focused caucus trainings on college campuses in Reno and Las Vegas. Trainings focused on educating attendees on the caucus process, recruiting volunteers, and hearing from students as we head into our First in the West Caucus in less than a month.

“Young voters are driving our country forward on critical issues like Climate Change, gun violence prevention, immigration, and student loan debt,” said Nevada State Democratic Party Chair William McCurdy II. “In 2018, Nevada saw an increase in turnout among teenage voters higher than the national average and we’re working to engage and turnout young voters again in 2020. From trainings and mock caucuses with our Young Dems to early vote and Caucus Day locations on campuses across the state, we’re working hard to ensure voices of all ages are heard in our First in the West Caucus.”

NV Dems Release Updated Training Hub Ahead of Saturday Caucus

State Party will host more than 55 trainings in person and online before Caucus Day

Trainings will include hands-on guidance on caucus calculator

Today, the Nevada Democratic Party released an updated online training hub as part of its ongoing efforts to provide materials and webinars for volunteers ahead of the First in the West Caucus on Saturday, February 22.

NV Dems have 55 training sessions scheduled between today and February 21 that will be available both online and in person. Volunteers can find the webinars and training materials here https://nvdems.com/caucus-training-materials/

“We understand just how important it is that we get this right and protect the integrity of Nevadans’ votes,” said Nevada State Democratic Party Caucus Director Shelby Wiltz. “We are proud that we have a robust training program that started over the summer, and that is continuing up until Caucus Day. We will continue to train our volunteers to make sure we have a successful caucus.”

In addition to these trainings and the over 3,000 volunteers already recruited for caucus day, NV Dems has recruited additional tech volunteers to help facilitate and troubleshoot any issues at sites across the state.

As the first Western state to make its voice heard in the presidential primary, the Silver State plays a pivotal role in deciding our nominee. Nevada is a majority-minority state with a nearly one-third Latinx population, making our electorate much more reflective of the Democratic Party and the country as a whole.
