Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 1 PM – 5 PM CDT at Des Moines Water Works in Des Moines, IA.

17 CANDIDATES: Bennet, Biden, Booker, Bullock, Buttigieg, Castro, de Blasio, Gabbard, Harris, Klobuchar, O'Rourke, Ryan, Sanders, Sestak, Steyer, Warren, Williamson and Yang.  (At one point 21 candidates were scheduled to speak, but several ended their campaigns including de Blasio who ended his campaign the day before).

Background: The Polk County Steak Fry was one of the biggest events of the cycle; announced ticket sales were 12,242 and 17 candidates spoke.  !3 of the major campaigns set up areas for their supporters around a very large field in Waterworks Park where they provided entertainment and activities.  The candidates and their supprters then marched to the speaking area for an afternoon of speeches.  Weather was a factor as storms were forecast.  The rains held off until the final speaker, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan.  This event is the successor to the Harkin Steak Fry.

A number of events are piggybacked off the Steak Fry or happened around the same time: the GLAAD LGBTQ Presidential Forum Sept. 20 in Cedar Rapids, the ICCI Action Fund/People's Action Presidential Forum also on Sept. 21 in Des Moines, and the Des Moines Public Schools/Des Moines Register Youth Voice Forum on Sept. 22 in Des Moines.

18 Democratic presidential candidates to headline Iowa’s famous political event

DES MOINES, IA – On September 21st, 2019, the Polk County Democrats will host 18 Democratic presidential candidates for the third annual Polk County Steak Fry. Speakers include:

“We’re fully expecting this to be the biggest Steak Fry yet,” said Polk County Chair Sean Bagniewski. “This is the first time that many of these 2020 presidential candidates will share a stage in Iowa and people from all across America have purchased their tickets to see them. The Steak Fry helped cement Senator Barack Obama’s strength in Iowa when he marched in with his thousands of supporters in 2007. We expect this Steak Fry will be just as important for the 2020 election.”
