2020 Iowa Caucuses—Presidential Campaign Offices

Current and former Democratic campaigns have opened more than 150 offices around the state from Council Bluffs and Sioux City in the West to Burlington and Dubuque in the East. In terms of the number of offices, the Buttigieg campaign leads with 35 as of Dec. 31, while smaller campaigns have one or two offices or even no announced offices. When a campaign hasn't opened an office in an area, campaign organizers may often be found working in a local cafe, library or community room. Many larger campaigns have a state headquarters with an undisclosed address in Des Moines where senior staff work. Field offices, where field staff and volunteers work, serve as hubs for activity including phone banking, canvasses and data entry as well as debate watch parties, discussions and other events. In addition, some campaigns also open GOTC or staging offices in the closing weeks before the caucuses.

Selecting an optimal location for a campaign office takes considerable work, the operations director or other responsible staffer weighs considerations such as accessibility to supporters, parking, room for growth, and terms of the lease. A campaign may choose to situate an office in a high visibility location on the main street in the center of the city or town or in a less centrally located but still visible area near or in a shopping mall or supermarket or in a more secluded or nondescript location. Some campaign offices are rather spartan, while others are well decorated with lots of nice artistic touches. Offices can operate for weeks or even months before being formally opened/announced. Opening events may feature the candidate or surrogates.
