Club for Growth Action
"Pedigree" +
2:00 TV ad run in Iowa from Mar. 11, 2019.
[Music]
Female Announcer: Beto O’Rourke’s image-crafters say, “he’s Barack Obama — but white.”
…He sure does act like it.
Born with a blue-blood pedigree, the scion of a prominent family…
His father-in-law, a billionaire real estate developer who bankrolled a super PAC to buy Beto a congressional seat.
This, after Beto did his bidding on the El Paso City Council:
Pushing a downtown “redevelopment” scheme to bulldoze a poor Hispanic neighborhood, while enriching developers like his father-in-law.
That’s Beto’s idea of ‘community organizing’ — a bit different than
President Obama’s.
And while both earned undergrad degrees at Columbia, they blazed
different paths.
Obama championed progressive causes on campus, seeking to combat
inequality and harmful stereotypes…
…Beto perpetuated them, casting aspersions on working women whose,
quote, “only qualifications seem to be… large breasts and tight
buttocks.”
Obama went on to become the first African-American editor of the
Harvard Law Review, breaking barriers…
…[siren SFX] Beto crashed into them, causing a collision while driving drunk, then fleeing the scene to avoid accountability.
His charges were dropped [gavel
SFX]… as people of color languished behind bars for far less.
Youthful indiscretions? Or threads in a lifelong pattern revealing
an indelible sense of entitlement?
Progressives say Beto’s bizarre campaign rollout “drips with white
male privilege.”
The kind of “navel-gazing, self-involved” behavior a woman or person
of color could never get away with.
…Especially after losing an election.
But with a charmed life like his, you can never really lose; that’s why Beto’s running for president:
Because he can.

Notes: Former U.S. Rep. Beto
O'Rourke is not yet a candidate. He has said he has made a
decision about whether to run and an
announcement is expected any
day. If he does run, this ad gives a sample of what he can
expect. It is interesting to see the Club for Growth present such
a positive picture of President Obama. The March 11, 2019 press
release from Club for Growth Action:
Beto O’Rourke is the Privileged White Man
Democrats Say They Hate
Washington, D.C. – Club
for Growth Action jumped into the Democratic presidential primary with
a new two-minute long ad targeting Beto O’Rourke. The five-figure ad
buy will run in Iowa on television and digital media. It is the first
of many attacks Club for Growth Action will use to inform voters in the
Democratic primary.
Entitled “Pedigree,” the ad highlights O’Rourke’s “blue-blood pedigree”
as “the scion of a political family” and contrasts his entitled, “white
male privilege” with Barack Obama’s progressive values. While O’Rourke
has compared himself to President Obama, the ad points out just how
different the two politicians are.
Politico featured Club
for Growth Action’s foray into the presidential primary, highlighting
the Club for Growth Action’s leadership in shaping the race:
The anti-tax Club for Growth [Action] is expected to begin airing a
two-minute commercial in Iowa this week aimed at dampening liberal
support for O’Rourke, who’s expected to enter the race any day… The
offensive represents the GOP’s first concerted effort to wreak havoc in
the Democratic race, and it arrives as senior Republicans have begun
deliberating how the party should seek to influence the primary.
“Club for Growth Action is committed to presenting the truth to voters
in the presidential race,” said Club for Growth Action President David
McIntosh, “and that includes talking to Democrats in their primary.
Beto O’Rourke has long sold Democrats a bill of goods, pretending to be
a liberal super star while exploiting his father-in-law’s connections
to climb the political ladder. It’s time Democratic voters in Iowa know
who the real Beto O’Rourke is – an entitled, corrupt political climber.”
